Let's go Australia, Olympics thread

No, watched that live in PE in grade 11. Was great. There were plenty of superstars playing back then but it was before the NBA really went global in coverage. So the natural mindset was to fire up and pressure them. The Aussie way. But in the 00s when coverage went global, players who grew up watching these superstars got star struck. The players were more interested in watching the show put on by bryant then stopping him. The current squad wont give USA any where near as much time and will make them earn it.
You'd be about my age and my recollection is total opposite. That team was full of icons. Not quite Dream Team 1 standard but next best. I think the names then a far bigger than the names in this US team, partly because their 2 best players aren't there.

But that period of time, post Jordan, NBA Jam, White Men Can't Jump - NBA/US basketball was everywhere.

I think you misunderstood what i was trying to say. I know the team was pretty good and they were world wide stars But the Aussie players hadnt grown up watching them. Plus had longley bratke and gaze as wise heads of aussie basketball. Didnt take shit from anyone. Last of the old school.

My guess would be Aussies score around the 80 to 90 mark, US around 100-110. Final margin around 20.. No one else wil get that close. I wont miss it. Sorry Sam.

I understand what you are saying but basketball fans (and most the boomers would have been fans of the game) would have found a way to watch the NBA.

I remember watching it on ABC in the early 1990's about 11:00pm

What I think you are saying, the NBA became accessible to the average man and his dog via Foxtel and ESPN and channel 10 in the mid 2000's.

Basketball fans found a way.

Its the finishing class that will kill us no matter how hard we work.

The depth of the squads will kill us.

Thery go 12 deep. We go to about 6 or 7 and then fall away.

Our starting 5 can match anyone. Mills, Delly and Bogut have played big minutes in NBA finals. The pressure won't getb to them, not anymore.

Yep agree. I'm of the same era and any basketball fan was NBA mad back then. The Aussie players definitely knew they were playing living legends. I agree that players like Gazey wouldn't have been intimidated easy and Hammer (Shane Heal) was just Hammer. He'd take it up to Mike Tyson if given the chance back then.

EDIT: geez, look at the names, I miss golden era NBA: Barkley, Penny Hardaway, Karl Malone, Grant Hill, Reggie Miller, Olajuwon, Shaq, Gary Payton, Pippen, David Robinson and John Stockton!

Boner.

The NBA was global well before that match. Michael Jordan ensured that.

In fact the NBA used to be free to air in the 90s.

I can't actually remember longley playing many Olympic games.

Since when was bradtke a wise head?

If you had said Phil Smythe I would have agreed.

Great no look goal in the waterpolo. Flipped it gently over his head and lobbed the keeper

Oh, and there isn't a 4 by 200m relay in athletics, but they could win 5000, 10,000 and marathon too. Surely a good athlete could take out both walks and the steeplechase too.

LOL the idea that being world class in 100m sprint and the marathon is equivalent to being world class in the 200m freestyle and butterfly is ludicrous.

1500 was mentioned. And 100m. And all 4 strokes.

How about world class in 100m and long jump?

Yes that's more common, not so much any more.

16 gold medals is stupid but swimmers winning 4 or so at one Olympics isn't rare. Be a gun freestyler at 100-200 and you have 5 events to compete in, add butterfly and you are Phelps.

For those who like a fun podcast and the Olympics, this is a hilarious thing to listen to and why we can ignore that the USA are going to win their 1,000th medal at the games as those numbers count the 1904 Olympics in St Louis which actually took place over 7 months and did include sports such as mud throwing. Don't believe me, then listen to this podcast and chuckle at the downright idiocy which was those 'Olympic' games.

Phelps is a freak. Like Haile Gebrselassie was a freak, winning from 1500m to Marathon.

Not many world class men over 200m in 2 strokes. Several more women. More freestyle/butterflyers in the sprints. Rarely see breaststrokers do anything else. Yes there are more medals in swimming, but listing every event is a bit over the top.

Yes having 3 relays available at 100-200m is generally in amongst any big medal hauls (spitz, phelps etc)

Was that the won where the marathon "winner" took a taxi?
