Lets Keep Our First Round Draft Pick!

after much consideration i have come to the conclusion that under no circumstances should we trade away our first round draft pick in a deal for an uncontracted player.............

if a DalSanto or Kelly or Kerr or Schammer type were available then YES we should consider it but the reality is it is looking like this type of quality midfielder is not going to be available in this draft...........

as for current discussions on Bartel...........well yes he might be going thru a purple patch at the moment but he is far from a consistent 'gun' player.......he would remind me more of a Misiti-type player & i dont reckon thats what we should be looking for............yes Bartel is quality but FFS he aint worth our first round pick..............

furthermore its hard enough to swallow having a crap season without seeing some benefit in the form of the early draft pick 'reward' in the shape of a well-regarded 'up & coming' kid..................for me this is reason to feel excited about a draft prospect rather than trade it away for an overpriced, overrated reject from another club.

On Bartel, the question that should be asked is if he would compliment our current batch of young midfielders, or hinder them.

Our current crop all have the ability to win the ball, Winderlich, Dyson, Stanton, Lovett, Monfries can all win it from contested situations. But I actually think Bartel would compliment this lot and perhaps replace Jason Johnson when he is finished and let the current lot do what they do best, and that's run and run. Bartel isn't the tough, aggressive player that JJ is, but he does work hard under the packs and also kicks goals. You're probably right in comparing him to Misiti.

Bartel would be a good get for us. But would I trade a first rounder for him, well probably not at this stage. If we win another 3-4 games and finish 10-11th and move higher up in the draft then I think we should definately think about it.

Agree with Longy.
We have too many inside midfielders and not enough outside players. Bartel doesn't really suit us at the moment.

Schammer would be a good get but very unlikely as he would be going back to SA if anything.
Would definitely trade a first rounder (pick 6 at this stage) for Kerr.

People forget that first round picks don't automatically guarantee a top player.
For example, if we had pick 8 and Collingwood had Jason Winderlich, would we trade for it ?
Or if the Bulldogs had pick 4 and we had Farren Ray would they trade for it ?

No and No. However that is what happened. Ray went at 4 and Winderlich went at 8.

If there is a player available that is genuinely proven, still has 10 years up his sleeve and we have a pick outside the top 4, then everything is up for trade.

I am not a fan though of trading any picks inside the top 4.

I think we need to use our first round pick to draft another tall defender . I know all the talk has been about us drafting pacy midfielders but i dont think there is a lot between most of the mid fielders in this years draft . With most of our tall defneders ( Bolton , Hunt ,Henno and Richards) seemingly at the cross roads i think this draft it would be a good idea to draft another tall.
I think it is already showing that Stanton, Monfries and Dyson will provide a major upgrade to our mid-field and i dont think we will lose too much by picking a mid fielder in the second and third rounds this year.

Very true , if the 6th best pick looks to be a top midfielder then yes we should take him , in saying that i feel that the picks around 5 to 10 may contain better talls this year as there have been less real stand outs this year. In 3 years time we will more than likely be looking for Fletchers replacement. Draft another tall now and along with Andrew Lee hope we come up with something.

Least 2 of those 3 can get a lot of senior games...Tenace is struggling to find regular form in the VFL, let alone a spot on the seniors interchange.
