They sure did love their covers. As did Johnny Thunders and The Dead Boys.

Here's his traditional opener - I was lucky enough to see him on his only ever Australian tour. It was in the sweaty confines of the Mosman Hotel jammed up against the stage... he also busted out Eve Of Destruction.

Johnny Thunders live - that is so cool! What are your memories of the gig and was Jerry Nolan on the tour?

Speaking of cool, loved The Dead Boys covering one of my all time favourite bands, The Stooges. Pity there's pretty much no footage of The Stooges in their heyday around, save for this amazing live footage from a festival in Cincinnati. Funhouse should be taught in schools...

Cheers to whoever put up the Lubricated Goat clip.:D

I still get a kick out of the first time I ever saw them on late night rage,...... they were completely nude. Completely. Was a bit of an eye opener for a young and innocent Groggy.

Ha ha, Groggy, can you imagine that the Lubricated Goat footage you are talking about comes from their performance of In The Raw shot for the late '80's ABC show, Blah Blah Blah (featuring a very young Andrew Denton)? Needless to say that Media Watch was inundated with complaints from self righteous moral crusaders who were horrified by Aunty putting on such filth!

BTW, love the Stems tracks. A mate and I used to take a beaten up tape of At First Sight... to every party we went to and wait for the right opportunity to stick on Otherside and crank it up. There were two other songs that we tried to sneak on at parties. The first was a little Libyan love song...

I'm still dirty I missed this show!

And the second featured an original Buzzcock...

That's a classic piece of footage and yes Funhouse should be taught in school - The Stooges remain one of my all time favourite bands and have been since I first heard them when I was about 17. Did you seem them at the 2006 Big Day Out? It was something I never thought I'd see but it was sensational. I was gutted when the news came through this year that Ron Asheton died. It looks like the Stooges legacy continues with James Williamson being drafted back into the fold and some shows coming up in 2010 focussing on the Raw Power Era stuff, sadly so much of their great music from that era was never put on album - there are out-takes and bootlegs - unfortunately the greatest rock band the world has ever seen imploded and those involved were lucky to survive the experience. It took a long while for the wounds to heal...

Jeez Tex I'm missing a few brain cells since that night in 1986 (I destroyed a few that night too). Jerry Nolan was the drummer on the Johnny Thunders tour, Glen Matlock was on bass and Barry Jones was on guitar. It was pretty much a greatest hits show of his work with The Heartbreakers and beyond with a couple of NY Dolls tracks thrown in for good measure.
JT was in pretty good shape and the band absolutely kicked arse. Standout tracks for me were So Alone (rather poignant) and Chinese Rocks (which is one of my all time favourite songs).

I think this is a rather fitting Saturday morning mild hangover track.

The medicine has kicked in and I'm in the mood for some 70's prog rock.

Let's start with Bon Scotts hero, Alex Harvey.

BTW, love the Stems tracks.

As I alluded to a few posts back, The Stems are one of my favourite Australian bands of all time. Dom Mariani is a power-pop legend. Revered in Europe, yet destined to remain largely unknown in his homeland.

Here's a couple of the great man's non-Stems gems.

The first from a short-lived band he had with Daryl Mather (ex-Lime Spiders, and leader of the criminally under-rated Orange Humble Band, an all-star act that has released two of the finest power-pop albums money can buy)....

And the second from Dom's own band, DM3.....

And the second featured an original Buzzcock...

Seminal band.

A Magazine standard that has been covered by every man and his dog. (Including, I just discovered, Simple Minds as well.)

Personally, I reckon the best cover I've heard of the song has been by Jason Falkner from Jellyfish. But it ain't on youtube. I'm not a Moz fan, but I must say I don't mind his version either.

But of course over the years it's also become a standard for another Australian band who do the song proud as well.....

Anyways, 2009 was a good year for me from a music perspective. My favourite band, Superchunk, came out of an almost decade-long hiatus to release an Ep of songs accumulated during their lay-off (including a track they did for the Spongebob film), in order to clear the decks so to speak, for the recording of some brand new material.

Best of all, musically-speaking, the Ep saw a return to the catchy, upbeat Superchunk of old.

Here's the lead track, "Learning To Surf"....

Hopefully, the new album should be out next year.

In the meantime, they've released the first single from it, "Crossed Wires"......

Viva Le Chunk.

Don't be a complete stranger mate.

Basia won't be the same without your awesome input.

On that note, I've done enough of "the past" thingy. From now on it's all new from here on in from me. This band The Airborne Toxic Event have a stupid name but a worth a listen IMO.

Enjoy. or not.

Another from airborne toxic event, perhaps the best one.

As the year draws to a close I'm feeling nostalgic about some of the great shows I have seen this year - unfortunately I don't have live footage of them all but you'll get the idea - this list is in chronological order, not order of merit.

I'll start with January.

What a month! All Tomorrows Parties Mt Buller - the best festival I have ever seen and of course the yearly travelling circus that is the Big Day Out were highlights. Seeing acts of the calibre of Spiritualized, Dirty Three, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Neil Young, Died Pretty and The Saints all within a month certainly saw the musical bar raised high.

My live musical year kicked into gear with the supremely talented Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings

Next up was Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds - all class.

Then the ATP extravaganza.

Grinderman

Spiritualized

Dead Meadow

Dirty Three

The Saints

X (how dirty does this sound????)

Died Pretty - I'll never tire of this song... aural excellence

Neil Young - takes The Beatles to new heights - this is what he closed his Melbourne BDO set with after blowing the collective audience's mind. Old Shakey's still got it!

Neil Young deserves two spots - hearing Cowgirl in The Sand at the BDO was pure heaven

I'm saddened to hear of the passing of another great Australian rock n roller - Rose Tattoo guitarist Mick ***** succumbed to liver cancer today.

RIP Cocksy - gonna miss you.

Man those guys are just about all gone. Pete Wells, Ian Rilen, & now Mick ***** all passed away from the original line up.

Mick and Wellsy jamming somewhere again no doubt.

*Edit. Digger Royal gone too....:( That's the whole band bar Angry....

Oh man, that sucks. I have so many cool memories of this band.

That only leaves Angry and Geordie Leach from the original lineup that produced the first classic album.

The best Australian debut album ever. Period!

Young and fresh when she hit town
Hot for kicks just to get around
And now she lays in a filthy room
She kills the pain with a pick and a spoon
And in the streets the garbage lies
Protected by a million flies
With roaches so big they got bones
They moved in and made themselves at home

Nice boys...don't play rock'n'roll

Definitely one of the all time classic Australian albums. The Tatts in full flight were an awesome sight/sound to behold.

For the record Cocksy was actually a nice boy - a cheeky larrikin, but always a gentleman and a damned fine heart.

I'm surprised you didn't put this track up Wally...

Definitely one of the all time classic Australian albums.

Every song on that album goes off, even the schmaltzy "Stuck on You" is a good song. That first self titled album is a rare jewel that one purchases for the hits, and then discovers all over again for the other cuts on the album. I must have had it on my turntable for 2 years solid. I have found very few albums like that in my life.

The Tatts in full flight were an awesome sight/sound to behold.

The Sea-view Ballroom, Bombay Rock, Broadford........ahhh the memories.

Now you’re the prettiest by far
