Time to make some hay!
We must be brave in trade week and we must continue to cull the bottom of the list and take new kids in the draft. We must find the few pieces of the puzzle that we are missing. We must secure a quality tap ruckman and a quick skilled mid or two. Someone to take over the centre grunt work fro m Burns would be on the shopping list as well.
Seriously consider trading or delisting Lonie, O’Bree, Rusling, Richards, Davies, Bryan, and 2 or 3 younger players. I wouldn’t delist Lonie, Rusling or O’Bree but I would definitely try and trade them to a club that wants to top up a bit. Rusling is an interesting one. A year ago I wouldn’t have considered trading him but two shoulder injuries and the debut of Ben Reid later I would definitely test the market. We have kids to play in their spots now and we will have Dawes and Brown to add to the mix next year and before we even draft a player we have a couple of rookies to consider for promotion.
Maybe Dogs, Saints or Cats who would feel they have a shot and might be willing to deal. An extra first round pick, a tap ruckman and a skilled mid with pace would be high on the agenda. DO NOT draft ANY kid that is not a quality kick. I don’t care how quick or how tough he is. Kicking is vital and we have to get better. Natural talent is the answer not coaching deficiencies.
We have debuted 8 players and have had two more play their first games for Collingwood. This is another opportunity for our club to build a list capable of winning premierships. We cannot afford to let it slip this time. We have to identify the holes and work out butts off to fill them.
Clarke is a real bonus coming outside the normal draft constraints. We should try and identify the next best kid in Ireland and get on a plane with Clarke and convince him to come to Collingwood. Look at South Africa, PNG and elsewhere. We have the resources and we should use them to beat the draft odds.
