Time to make some hay!

We must be brave in trade week and we must continue to cull the bottom of the list and take new kids in the draft. We must find the few pieces of the puzzle that we are missing. We must secure a quality tap ruckman and a quick skilled mid or two. Someone to take over the centre grunt work fro m Burns would be on the shopping list as well.

Seriously consider trading or delisting Lonie, O’Bree, Rusling, Richards, Davies, Bryan, and 2 or 3 younger players. I wouldn’t delist Lonie, Rusling or O’Bree but I would definitely try and trade them to a club that wants to top up a bit. Rusling is an interesting one. A year ago I wouldn’t have considered trading him but two shoulder injuries and the debut of Ben Reid later I would definitely test the market. We have kids to play in their spots now and we will have Dawes and Brown to add to the mix next year and before we even draft a player we have a couple of rookies to consider for promotion.

Maybe Dogs, Saints or Cats who would feel they have a shot and might be willing to deal. An extra first round pick, a tap ruckman and a skilled mid with pace would be high on the agenda. DO NOT draft ANY kid that is not a quality kick. I don’t care how quick or how tough he is. Kicking is vital and we have to get better. Natural talent is the answer not coaching deficiencies.

We have debuted 8 players and have had two more play their first games for Collingwood. This is another opportunity for our club to build a list capable of winning premierships. We cannot afford to let it slip this time. We have to identify the holes and work out butts off to fill them.

Clarke is a real bonus coming outside the normal draft constraints. We should try and identify the next best kid in Ireland and get on a plane with Clarke and convince him to come to Collingwood. Look at South Africa, PNG and elsewhere. We have the resources and we should use them to beat the draft odds.

I have to agree Mark.

I have been thinking about rusling and if the deal is right he could be bait. Because of the guys we have picked up I dont think he is going to be important enough to the structure for the club not to consider it. I side that lacks a few forwards like a North Melbourne may consider a trade for someone like Hale.

Id definately consider trades for Lonie(not sure we would get much) and Egan.

Agree with your sentiment Mr T. Amazing that after such a long period without a dominate ruckman that Collingwood still seem desperate to aquire one.

Hine indicated last year that this years draft was heavy with midfielders. If we could manage another two first round picks and use them well, we could be on the verge of a golden period similar to Kangaroo's during the 90's

The hard part is who to delist or trade to achieve this

I would look at trading R Lonie, in search of a 2nd round pick, and a few others might be in the same boat with him. Ben Davies and Daniel Nicholls are going to be delisted unless they can improve over the next 10 weeks and Shane Wakelin will retire.

Keep Guy Richards. I know this may sound crazy but he needs more games under his belt. I'm fairly confident we will recruit Scott Meyer at the end of the year. He might be the answer to our ruck needs, he's mastered the "volley spike", and he can push back and find a bit of the ball in the backline.

That's all for now.

This draft trade period is crucial for the pies in terms of list management, and the ability to build towards a premiership standard list.

Questions have to be raised over Licca, and Holland and their value to the woods moving forward.....especially on field, both seem to be struggling atm and their poor field kicking is a big question mark against them, Holland is generally an accurate kick, but they are too slow and gets too much air in them, will the youngsters push past them??

O'Bree will stay on the list, he wont demand much in a trade, see J.Johnson from the dons, and still offers something that we dont have much of atm.

Egan, Lonie, Rusling, L.Davis should all be shopped around if we can use them as part of a deal to secure a quality ruck prospect jump at it i reckon

Licuia is all but finished. He won't get any trade value but he will offer us reliable depth. I would trade him if anyone wanted him but I'd be happy to keep him given who he is. Maxwell is another one to throw up at trade time. While he is a good solid player he is bhind a few in most positions. He be great for depth if we weren't still searching for a balanced list. He would get a decent price. Rusling, Maxwell, O'Bree and our second rounder for an early pick? Maybe Hale and Norths first pick?

I would keep Licca on the list in a Wakelin type scenario of this year

Not sure about Holland, but hope he gets back to the good footy he was playing last year soon......he is a shadow of his former self this year

If no sides had a sniff at J.Johnson from the dons, i doubt any would take an interest in O'Bree.

Maxwell is a bloke who may be trade bait, but unlike the other blokes he is a good person to have around the club and is a leader.

O'Bree would be being offered as a layer in form. JJ hadn't played much good footy a while and that was why he was offered. Lockyer should be in the mix too but that's a red rag to bull around here these days.

I think O'Bree should be shopped around, but he is important to our structure still. He is Nathan Foley with slower legs, realistically, and he is still doing plenty to be worth a late 2nd round pick, or added for a 1st round pick with someone like Egan even.

Egan and O'Bree for a first rounder is realistically possible...or even a priority pick (17/18). Rusling is great trade bait, many teams would love him, despite injury, and Rusling could be definately used for Jamie Charman.

Charman and 2nd round (which would be early 20's) for Egan and Rusling is a possibility, thoughts?

Rusling is potentially the best trade bait we've had in years. Well I suppose Tarrant was but that was under different circumstances.

We have stocked up on key position players, especially forwards, and it is fair to say Rusling is pretty one-dimensional. But he is an exciting talent and key forwards are worth alot, let alone young talented ones.

Lockyer we shouldn't dangle unless it is to land a big fish.

I wouldn't trade O'Bree for any pick under 20 or a young player.

One player I want us to go after is Kane Tenace. I've always wanted us to go after him and his price would probably be pushed up now that he's had a few great performances (although he is still out of the team).

In fact here is a bit of a wish list. Those in brackets are going to take alot to get though.

Adelaide: Meesan/Biglands
Brisbane: Wood/Leunberger, (Charman)
Carlton: noone. Fevola would be good if we could pull it off but I don't think he should be a prime target. Bulldogs would demand him more and have much more to offer Carlton.
Essendon: Dyson (see if we can't develop him),
Fremantle: Warnock, Schammer (not sold on him but he seems gettable, what's he like inside)
Geelong: Tenace
Hawthorn: Bailey, (Campbell)
Kangaroos: Hale
Melbourne: (Sylvia) (Bruce), (Johnstone), Jamar? (not a fan though but maybe a high draft pick?)
Port Adelaide: Cassisi (Licuria replacement? Would be hard to get though with PA rebuilding), Chaplin (I'm a fan of this player. I know key defenders aren't that important for us at this stage), (Brogan)
Richmond: Noone really unless they want to get rid of Jarrad Oakley Nicholls pretty cheaply
St. Kilda: Perhaps Birss at bargain basement price?
Sydney: Noone unless they want to put one of their inside midfielders up.
West Coast: No one
Western Bulldogs: Hahn

Trade options are Maxwell Lonie O'Bree and Rusling. I'd also offer our first round pick if the right player came along. Not Lockyer. Maybe Egan at a pinch, but his value would not be high, we'd be trading at a loss.

Lonie's at the top of that list for mine. I'd rather keep Maxwell, and at his age O'Bree might be lacking in trade value. That leaves Rusling. It would be a massive punt to trade him considering Reid Dawes and Brown are unproven, but it might be a punt worth taking. He's also an Adelaide boy which may add currency.

I'd pass on midfielders - we have plenty coming through - and go for a ruckman. Lonie and a first round pick could snare a good player. I would not delist/trade Richards or Bryan as I think we need one more ruck anyway. Leave that call for 2009.

Charman and 2nd round (which would be early 20's) for Egan and Rusling is a possibility, thoughts?
Haha

We would only accept that if we also got Lonie and Richards.

That way, whenever someone came on the market who was half-decent, we could immediately throw out Egan, Rusling, Lonie, and Richards as possible bait, and save us the trouble of thinking of someone half-decent.

As much as I rate Rusling, I'm not exactly sure how valuable an 11-game, 9-career-goals, injury-prone forward would seem to another team. He seems to be the sort that opposition teams might consider at a bargain price, but I can't really see much being offered up for him. Keep him for now. He'll only increase in value from here on in.

They would have to be crazy not to be interested in doing that deal.
Seriously, I really enjoy your posts LF50 but c'mon, this is NOT going to happen.
Maybe Egan, Rusling and our 2nd round pick for Charman would be closer to the mark, but even then i'm not so sure.

You over rate our players.
I would swap O'Bree for Foley in a heartbeat but Richmond wouldn't consider it. Charman would cost us out first pick plus Rusling and another player. I doubt they would be interested in Egan. Egan has little to no trade value. He has done nothing. He's the sirt of player we maya s well keep for another year to see if he develops unless we have a dire need for his list spot. We need a ruckman and if we get one it will cost. Look at what McKee cost us.

I think the main question is why would brisbane trade Charman? Can't say Leuenberger is his replacement as he hasn't played yet and rucks take ages to develop.

I am so glad none of you guys are in charge of our list management, or else we would be in for some Tony Shaw years.

Trading Egan, Rusling and a pick for Charman is paying well over the odds.

Remember we don't know how good Egan and Rusling will be- they could both be 200 game players for our club.

Like I said, thank god none of you guys are actually in charge or else I would tear up my membership.

That is the point, to get something we need.....a quality ruckman, we have to give up something of some value that we have a few of

we have quite a few flanker type players so egan and rusling are potential trade bait

They are not proven, and could be good or could be bad.....the club has to make some hard decisions to get things that we need, and we need a good ruck much more than we need a young kid with potential who could play as a forward flank

It is paying over the odds, especially considering we only need a good tap ruckman who can be backup for Fraser or even take most of the ruckwork. Getting a Charman is like killing a fly with a cannon. Giving up any 3 of the following; first or even second round who could be a good kid, a good depth player with talent in Lonie, Egan who could be anything, Rusling who could also go on to do great things would set us back.

If fully fit, Egan and Rusling would NOT be walk up starts in our best 22.
Why would any club, in this case Brisbane trade a gun young ruck for 2 very marginal players?
I wonder if there are a few people on the Brisbane forum talking about getting Pendlebury for Joel Patfull and Robert Copeland and perhaps a 2nd round pick? Not interested? No? Funny about that.
