Letting Blight go is a Massive Mistake by the Club in my Mind

Except he is massively home sick, showed nothing this year, knocked back the gold coast and only wants to play in WA. I agree huge mistake on his half not wanting to play for the premier

Thats what the kid is telling everyone in WA. You cant put a gun to his head and make him play for the Pies. Anyway, he's gone. Good luck!

Are you sure we have 4 picks in the draft. At the moment, I calculate 3.
IN (6): Blair, Keeffe, Young, Tarrant, Ceglar, Krakouer
OUT(9): Fraser, Corrie, Blight, Cook, Barham, Lockyer, O'Bree, Medhurst, Rusling.

Who is also out that I am missing that give us 4 picks? Unless did the AFL increase the team list by 1?

Not sure if Tom Young (NSW) counts.

Maybe because JA hasn't signed or Presti may retire.

Blair got elevated halfway through the season so maybe he doesn't count? That would make 5 ins and 4 spots to fill.

Is it possible that Johnno or Davis now go onto the veteran's list (outside the primary list) to replace O'Bree (both will be 30 next year and have done 10 years with Pies); so in effect there will now be 10 'Out' from the primary list.

'In' is 6 (including Young already taken presumably at last pick 78). That leaves 4 live picks 44, 45, 60, 77 in the ND.

There may be other explanations; your hint about AFL rule changes is always possible - every time you turn around these days there's another rule change. :)

Not sure about the 4 picks business.

Perhaps it is Tom Young for pick 77 because he wasn't on our list this year. (Not rookie or senior list)

He was a NSW scholarship holder who got permission to play with our VFL team.

Rookie elevations get called out now on draft day. Lachie Keefe & Blair will be picks 93 & 110 or some nothing pick but are locked in.

If Presti retires or JA bails we use pick 77 on a newbie and get Young with pick 127 or some other nothing pick.

My gut says Presti will retire but is waiting for MM to come back from Ireland to be there to honour a great servant of the club.

This is my understanding. We still have to bloody draft him first, he can't just appear on our list. I think 44,45 and 60 will be our live picks, presuming Jack stays, then use 77 to draft Young.

I too was surprised when i heard we were looking to cut Blight. But how many times, since MM has been coach, has a player that's been cut by the club gone on to play good football somewhere else? The only one i can think of is Jason Roe though there may be others. MM is a very good judge of a footballer once they're in our system so I trust his judgement.

Also I believe the reason there was no interest in Blight during trade week is that any prospective club to pick him up would more than likely rookie list him. So they didn't want to waste a senior list spot by doing a late pick trade like we did with the Lions for Corrie.

Wasn't Liam Jurrah let go from us too?

Nah, he was a VFL top up player for about 4 weeks, but then went home to Alice Springs for family reasons, and was then picked up with the no.1 pick in the rookie draft by Melbourne.

We never had him.

Nah he was in essence an additional player when he got elevated this year. We need to find a list spot for him.

I think i'll go through and figure out how many picks we have tomorrow if I can be buggered after work.

We've got four, but the 4th and final pick is used on young, of jack walks out or presti retires we will have 5 with the 5th and final being used on young

I'm still shocked by Medhurst's decision to retire.

I still don't get it. Why? Lost motivation?

I think so. Isn't he going to go travel for ages now? He is a very different kind of guy - psyched himself up for VFL matches by reading a novel, when most other players are on the iPod or doing light drills. Bit of a Betheras.

Eleven delistings from a premiership side is a massive move. Maybe more if we lose Anthony or Presti. Blight is the only shock but clearly theres a story there that we arent privy too. Medhurst is the other surpise but quite clearly his ankle is shot.

Very happy with the ins although Young straight onto the senior list is a bit of a surprise.

Elevations during the season are temporary. As soon as the season is over he is back on the rookie list. So we have to delist a senior player to make room for him.

Yeh sounds like Davis and Johnno are on more coin than Presti, especially Davis who had signed a pretty good 2yr deal after his AA year in 2009. Makes perfect sense to put him on the veteran's list.

Will be interesting to see if Presti does decide to go on.

Also, just did a little bit of research on wikipedia and had a look at the 2006 drafts, rookie included. It is absolutely amazing when you look at all the players we took. Reid, Brown, Dawes, Dick, Goldsack, Wellingham, Macaffer and Clarke. Only Dick and Clarke are not premiership players and you could mount a very strong case that both could have been with a bit more luck.

Hopefully Hine can nail some gems in this draft which will be more important than ever.

I don't think there are any real surprises in those changes.

I think Tom Young just had to be put straight on the main list. i could see him getting a game in the seniors during the year. Shows heaps of potential imho.
