Announced today. From what I've heard (sources from his home town) he may be going to Collingwood. I think there's at least another club interested also.

Apparently there's a press conference happening now where Brad Scott will be announcing he's staying for anothre year.

I would have thought that we woulda kept Baird on as a rookie after this year.....

He showed some potential in the midfield and could have been part of the "new-age" midfield once Vossy, Lappin,Aka,Black retire

I doubt it's our call. We probably would've if we could've. I'd say homesickness or the promise of a senior list spot may be the cause.

Delisting doesn't necessarily mean we think they're duds.

Hot rumour already is that the Lions were only going to offer him another year as a Rookie and he wanted to nominate for the draft in case a senior list opportunity came up, which I thought was fair enough.

Lions then de-listed him which seems a little harsh as he was already a Rookie. What is the go with Harding, Pask & Hamill?

Hope Baird gets a Senior spot somewhere because it looks to me that the Lions have 'outsmarted" themselves, particularly as there should be some questions over the decision to elevate Allan ahead of him.

Simon Black isn't as old as them, he still at least 5-6 years of good footy left in him

I've seen him play a couple of times but not this year - mostly in previous years when he was involved with the Northern Eagles (as they then were). My impressions were that he was a bit skinny but quite nippy and clever around goals. I thought he showed quite a bit at that level. Disposal and decision making looked good.

I doubt nepotism came into it - every time I've seen him play he's looked a likely type and I doubt very much that Gubby is that type of bloke.

PS - There's a profile on him on the Lions website - pretty much consistent with my limited impressions.

I haven't seen young gubby play but it sounds like he has the same build as his dad; a fast; tough and skillfull player. Wish him all the the best at the lions. Fantastic news that the Scotts are still with us. Free from injury they are a formidable due. Throw in Browny and Johnno and we have the physical strength other clubs envy.

From what I saw the kid noticibly bulked up during the year, and seems very dedicated to his training reigime. He had an injury or 2 during the year but always came back with great tenacity and consistancy. I'd say that's got more to do with him being elevated than nepotism does. I reckon if Spaanderman had the same committment and attitude as Allan displayed, he would have been a regular in the senior side in his first year and played every game this year too. It just goes to show that attitude is just as important as talent.

As for Baird, I think the reaction to his 'delisting' is a bit over the top by some (mainly on other sites). Technically the kid was already 'delisted' from the senior list as he get's put back on the rookie list from the senior list anyways.

Now if 2 kids have been elevated and 3 others re-rookied for a 2nd year that covers all the 2005 rookies except Baird, and it looks like he was offered a 2nd year Rookie spot as well. My bet is his manager was in his ear saying he'll definately get picked up by another club based on the fact he played a handful of senior games. Thing is that he showed promise but not too much concrete in those games, so he might end up out of luck altogether.

Personally I think he should have taken his cue from Drummo who accepted a 2nd year rookie spot and ended up with a great show this year and now is elevated to the senior list. And when you are from Victoria and get yourself well settled up here - apparently he even met and got engaged to Pratty's little sister up here this year - then he is mad to jump ship when another year of getting really valuable experience under his belt is on offer.

On the Baird issue, I've just read what I believe to be the biggest load of tripe on another site. Someone saying stuff about him not wanting to be on a rookie wage next year for another year when he could get a 2 year contract with first year wages somewhere else - and they claim it from a reliable source.

Well their source obviously isn't Baird's Mum, older bro or cousin that lives up here.

I'm loathe to discuss stuff like player dollar values/wages but I have to in this case. Mark and I met this bloke and his mum at the umpires bar at Coorparoo at the aftermatch this year. Turned out is was Trav's mum and brother and then we met his cousin too. They were lauding the club and how they look after youngsters and make them part of everything and take every precaution and offer every opportunity etc. It was a real insight and a very pleasing one at that. Well what came out in that conversation is that Baird was given 1st year player wages instead of rookie wages by the club because he was an interstate rookie and had added expenses - just stuff like phone bills, travelling home for holidays etc. They gave the kid every financial chance they could. So that other story is just flaming bollocks!!! Grrrrrr it really makes me mad when people spread stupid stories around!!

Tapestry, what's the point of blowing wind here? Respond where the issue at hand is being discussed. You're not giving an opportunity to the other fellow to respond to your criticism. Bit unfair IMO.

The amount of constant criticism and second guessing I see on that site has peeved me right off. I couldn't give a fat clackers if it is seen as fair or not. It's my own fault for bothering to read it now and then I should just steer clear, BUT with people posting and reading both here and there the opportunity to get the wrong end of the stick is way to high for my liking. So I had a spit, big deal. I'm sure you'll get over it quicker than I will.

All this "i heard", "i know someone who knows someone", "cone of silence" blah blah blah stuff is just really getting my goat. Sorry if I sound harsh, it's not personal towards anyone. Just general frustration. It drives me nutty that people are happy to spread story after story but don't seem to take the time to do the sensible thing and just pick up the phone and ring the club and ask. We do it all the time. They either put us through to media or football and we either get an answer or get told it's something they don't discuss or they don't know personally. It's not ********ing rocket science.

Looks like it's not me or the other poster on the other site that needs to get over it. Calling others uninformed on another site as you yourself post uninformed so called facts is not IMO appropriate.
Your intonation about how Brisbane out of the goodness of their heart gave Baird a first year’s draftee wages is just that. Intonation.
All interstate rookies get over and above wage payments for the reasons you stated. Away from home expenses, travel, phone costs etc... It is AFL regulated. Nothing to do with Brisbane, although I do acknowledge that Baird would have been treated more than fairly by the Lions as our player welfare system has a vary high standards and quality reputation.

See that's what I thought at first too. Until I looked it up in that CBA that is on the AFLPA site. Turns out they don't have to pay them 'more', they do get to pay relocation allowances and provide x number of airfares but not ones for the player to go home they are for the parents to come visit the player etc, but don't have to pay them 1st year player wages which is what Baird's mum said we did and why it was so good.
