I wouldnt be surprised if we threw our hat in the ring for Petty again. However we should be able to get him for a future 2nd IMO. Which would equate to a pick int he 30s. He is struggling right now but so is Melbourne. Could be a good floating tall forward, defender option.

Not sure Bailey speak is coming from. Not out of contract until end of 2026, we probably wont have the salary cap to go the overs to really pursue a FA by the time that comes around. This is really our last year to throw money out there for a player, NWM is probably most likely.
You wouldn't be surprised re Petty, I'd be absolutely amazed, that option has sailed and then sunk.

I hope we’re balls deep into Zac Bailey as a free agent for next year (entice him with a move home and midfield time that he’ll never get at the Lions), but if we don’t land NWM I’d be pushing hard to get him this year.

I’m interested in George Hewett as an unrestricted free agent too. Would love to have a strong competitor in the middle to give us more flexibility with Dawson.
I don’t think Hewett’s a FA unless he got delisted at some point? Only moved from the Blues not long ago

He’s an unrestricted agent as his deal with Carlton ends this year.
He hasn’t been with Carlton for 8 years though, which is the min amount of time needed for one to be a RFA or UFA without being delisted

Edit: looks like he’s on the official AFL FA list. Looks like he was either delisted at one point, or that rule’s recently changed

Liam Ryan would be worth asking about.. 29 in October, get three good yrs.

I think once you've reached UFA you have UFA status from then on whenever out of contract. Different for RFA though possibly?

Players are only an RFA the first time they come out of contract after qualifying. After that, they are always a UFA whenever they are out of contract.

The big difference is that players can become UFA by being delisted before they have served the 8 years normally required to achieve FA status.

It would be fair enough too. On par with TT, Rankine, Dawson.

Edit - it’s a bummer he was right under our nose and somehow we didn’t value him correctly before the draft
The correct valuation was ahead of Rachele, ok if we get both in end but very good point, it's a miss even if Rachele is very good.

What rubbish, nowhere did any of the draft watchers have Waneganeen-Milera ahead of Rachele even with Wanganeen-Milera's advantage of not missing a complete season of U18's football unlike Rachele who did due to Victoria;s Covid lockdown.

If Wanganeen_Milera was so obviously better than Rachele please explain how GWS (Finn Callaghan), Suns (Mac Andrew), Hawks (Josh Ward), Fremantle (Jye Amiss), Richmond (Josh Gibcus) and Fremantle (Niel Erasmus) were all selected before him. Rewriting history in hindsight after the draft doesn't work for recruiters only us boffins.

A few had NWM ahead on here (eDPS, Bangers etc), but there’s literally no way of knowing what other AFL recruiters thought

Either way, I don’t see how it can be at all construed as a ‘miss’ if Rachele ends up the next best behind NWM of the first round selections taken within 10 selections after our own (I’d say he is the next best, currently)

You'll also notice Jake Soligo featured in none of them as far out as pick 35.

Here's Cal Twomey's July 2021 rankings, NWM nowhere to be seen in his top 25.

Twomey's August 2021 rankings NWM #18

Twomey's September 2021 rankings NWM #14

Twomey's Final rankings before the draft October 2021 #12

Hardly surprising though given Rachele had played 4 games in 2 years leading up to the draft and NWM played 17 games in his draft year 4 League and 13 Reserves.

Twomey works with the recruiters and he certainly never had NWM anywhere near Rachele in the pecking order in the months leading up to the draft.

We cannot re-sign Milera. Have to let him walk.
round 19 afl GIF by Adelaide Crows

Wayne Milera doesn’t walk. He weaves.
Right into a 3 year deal

dont you have to be in the bottom % of paid players which can also put you on the list. I dont think trading makes a difference. I swear we have had traded players on the FA list before. If Carlton really front ended his contract then this would make sense. I am not an expert though.

Seems like he has been a very consistent player, highly underrated I feel outside of WCE. He may wish to explore his options. Our midfield and scoring opportunities could allow him to demonstrate his true abilities. Im not against this idea.
