What other sports is it common in?
To me it’s as natural as a hanger.

'Ball in hand'?

It's from snooker/pool.

In snooker, if the cue ball is potted the opponent gets 'ball in hand' where they can place the cue ball anywhere in the D. In 8 ball a player can place the ball anywhere on the table after their opponent pots the cue ball. This is 'ball in hand'.

Yeah ok, I don’t follow that.
It’s used in a different context though.

Hence all the scrubbers they play.

Raiding the mid season draft helps too

It's not Ken who has them where they are. It is their PR driven list management.
I wouldn't be too cocky add a bit of top end talent like NWM and the rest start to look good, when thilthorpe is playing we are top 4 and when he's not we were bottom 4.

We need a speedy agile hard edged small forward if we're going to use Rankine and possibly Rachele more in the midfiels and there's a ripper who until now has mostly flown under the radar big time in Talor Byrne, at this point could possibly be picked up later in the draft with Twomey and co focussing on the likes of Hussein Al Achkar, Lachy Dovaston, Wes Walley, Adam Sweid, Jai Saxena and Zane Peuker etc.

Most of those listed there are aligned to AFL clubs via their NGA Academy.

Lachy Dovaston is probably the only high profile small forward available in this year's draft and will likely go 1st round given the paucity of small forward talent available in the draft.

IMO Talor Byrne's style is more suited to our needs than all of those others named with his take no prisoners attack on the contest not to mention his very decent left boot and forward craft when played there. Plays a lot of midfield for the Rebels with his toughness and contested ability but he'll play forward at AFL level. Already a solid little unit so I wouldn't anticipate he'd take too long to be AFL ready.
Feels like a good year to have a late first round pick (if we keep ours, of course)

8-25 range feels very even at this stage, for mine

Is he more a small midfielder playing as a forward or do you think he has genuine forward craft?

I’d love a genuine small forward, but hate that we always look to push midfield players to FB/HF flanks
Dovaston’s that guy IMO. Best goal sense in the draft crop

Byrne’s very good too (very well rounded), but not in the ‘match winner’ sense. I’d have him around the 30-ish mark right now

I don't think the chase for NWM is over TBH.

Jon Ralph said we were 3rd in the cue, but that was after he also said Tom Lynch would probably get 2 weeks for his hit on Butts.

Soooooooo
The only possibility is Port Power doesn't have draft or salary capital after re-signing Bergman for 2 years and then there is a change of mind from NWM who was initially thinking of staying and we pounce or Port Power knew it was between us or the Saints so decided to put their salary capital on Bergman which will explain that hand grenade Port Power threw about Walker.

He's a genuine small forward at AFL level, with a hard edge similar to the Pickett's, Papley's and Watson types stylistically with their attack on the contest and oppo. watch some of his rundown tackles...

Elijah Tsatas is the player that interests me, how he's not getting regular games in the Bombers midfield is mystifying, racks up massive numbers in the VFL every week.
Had a massive game against the Crows in the 2nd round with 11 clearances and in the 4 games he's played (1 as sub) he sits 9th on the AFL players ladder for centre clearances (2.75/game), has top end speed and agility, clean hands, good footy I.Q. and a ball magnet to boot.

Yet Scott continues to ignore his excellent VFL form so surely he'd be looking for more AFL opportunities elsewhere and given Scott won't play him you wouldn't think he'd cost too much despite being a former high end draft pick in the very strong 2022 draft.

Getting rid of Schoenberg who could never hit the side of a barn door and bring in Tsatas being a worse kick… nah, Tsatas just another Paddy Dow.

Tsatas if he came at the right price would be a big improvement on Schoenberg, for starters he has genuine speed and can find the ball in bunches. New start under a Burgess fitness regime wouldn't do any harm either.

I'm not sure our list management should revolve around replacing our couldn't quite make it so we gave em a rookie contract because we couldn't just cut ties, players

McLeod at 18 and Roo at 20 in 1995. Don’t think they would have been our highest paid. Although beside mods we had no other stars in 95. Even he only kicked 42 that year
Thank you for taking it literally

Going after Tsatas or Moir who aren't getting games at bottom 8 teams currently, we'd basically be saying that Essendon and Carlton are being run by absolute idiots

Which is a pretty safe bet I think

I’d want someone who is already established and will make us better, no more depth

He won't be depth, go watch the replay of our round 2 game against the Bombers, he absolutely dominated our mids around the clearances.

Butters $1.5m
NWM $1.2
Bergman $1m
Lukosius $1m
Rozee $1m plus
JHF - $900k

Maybe $6.5m between their mid and half backs? Leaves about $11m for everyone else - roughly $325k a player.
Would explain their lack of depth!

What's the confidence level in Butters staying? That's there most important player to retain imo

Lukosius the only boat anchor contract there - I can't see his output ever getting close to his contract cost.
Don't forget Atkins...
