Silvers said that Davis was brought in to support Nicks in the same way that Fagan was there to support Clarkson.

It's obviously very useful for coaches to have that - Clarkson has had 22 wins and 68 losses over the last five seasons, and Nicks is now probably favourite to win AFL Coach of the Year.

But it's a bit ridiculous to not give the AFL head coach credit for when his AFL team is being well coached. Every one successful has support, but you still deserve credit for your achievements.
Based on the evidence we have on Nick's coaching career at the Crows, do you believe we would be having the same year if no director of coaching was brought in?

Exactly the same?

No, I think we would be doing less well without Davis.

I feel we went into 2024 at least one coach short - you HAVE to have a senior assistant or similar in addition to the line coaches. Davis seems a great choice.

I do feel Nicks has been improving culture and system year on year at the Crows. Last year, we ended up with a 100% percentage, even after injuries and some frustrating close losses. I was very confident that it would click this year.

Some of the suggestions are a little optimistic I think.
  • News is that Bont is about to re-sign with the Dogs.
  • Likely that the Demons will reluctantly have to give up Petracca, but the whole saga last year was about him moving to a bigger Melbourne club like Collingwood or Carlton for his 'brand'. Struggle to see Adelaide getting any consideration from him.
  • While Essendon are on the ropes and have been decimated by injuries, I don't think they will be looking to salary dump their captain, heart and soul of the club, and one of the top players in the comp.

Petracca can still promote his brands from here, just need ANB and Burgess in his ear

He is success driven, we would be half a chance

Carlton's list is pretty bad. There aren't any players I'd want for Rachele

Like it would be dumb to trade him for any of Carlton's 27+ year olds (their only good players) and we don't need either of their tall forwards

Outside of that the sum total of their decent players are Walsh (who I wouldn't trade Rachele for) and maybe Jagga Smith

There is a couple I'd be OK picking off but really as third round trade sort of picking off, not the sort of thing I'd be wanting to include Rash in.

I just think that is lazy by Lloyd, "Rash supported Carlton as a kid, Carlton should try and get him"

You guys realize how much of a bargain you got with ANB yet?
Stats never did the campaigner justice he was so good for us, I ****ing hate watching us now and have for a couple years but I'll never hate this bloke. Hope he jags a flag with ya

I have said a number of times, that Davis absolutely has had a lot to do with our improvement this year and deserves a lot of credit.

You’re the one saying that Nicks has nothing to do with it. That suggestion, that a head coach, does not get some of the credit, is absurd.

It is in my opinion, equally absurd, to suggest that when a team spends a significant amount of time focussing on its defence, and then becomes a very cohesive and organised defensive unit, that that time spent developing it was not a factor.

I have already agreed with you that last year Nicks got things wrong and went too slow and defensive. However, as I have pointed out, in successful rebuilds, a period of regression is pretty common, and is sometimes perhaps even necessary for a team to refine its games and be the best version of themselves.

I’m not a big pro-Nicks guy either. You can go look in the Nicks thread and see heaps of criticisms from me about him.

However, we are currently 3rd on the ladder. We have the best percentage, are the number 3 team for points for, and the number 1 team for points against. If this was all Davis’ doing and nothing to do with Nicks, would he not be marching into the next board meeting and asking for the head coach role and a massive raise?
First off I’ve not said Nicks has nothing to do with our current form, clearly he’s good at getting the players up and any gameplan we adopt has to have his buy in.

However, what we know with Nicks is that any attempt to improve our defence in the past has come at the expense of our attack. Happened last year, happened 2022. His method is to go slow, which meant our forward line was out numbered. You’ve acknowledged he ****ed it last year, I don’t consider him focusing on our defence, by ****ing up our gameplan by going slow, has any bearing on what we are doing now to have such a good defence and that’s what started this conversation.

You’ve said Davis has had a big influence, well that’s obvious. So if you’re asking me who should get credit for our current game plan? I’m giving it to him based on Nicks past failings and the fact we brought in Davis to work on our game plan and execution of it, just refer back to Silvers comments during the preseason.

As for Davis demanding a raise and the head coach job? How do you know he wants to be head coach? You don’t think we had to pay him big $$ to leave his family behind and take on this role?

Wouldn’t it also be ridiculous to not be critical of the head coach and club for that matter when the team isn’t going well?

Because that’s exactly what you do.

I (like everyone else) would absolutely love NWM, gee he would almost be the last piece of the puzzle... I would offer this and next years first plus whatever coin he wants.

I hope Dawson and Rankine get in his ear.... Playing in front of 40K+ every second week and a team in contention.... Or languishing under Ro$$ Lyin' going nowhere for an irrelevant Melbourne based team.

Get it done Crows!!!! :$

I still feel it will be Port.

I know there will be challenges around getting the deal done, but I still think that's where it's going.

I think it’s taken a few in here to appreciate what he’s brought to the team.

Hey lads sorry if this has been discussed before, but is there any chance Matt Crouch re signs? Would be a decent fit for our mob I reckon.

He's a UFA, so if your mob are interested then they should make him an offer.

Given the way Sam Berry has developed this year, it's hard to see Crouch working his way back into the senior team in 2026, so he may not even receive a contract offer from the AFC this time around.

Crouch could be a target for a few clubs. If Oliver wants out then he could end up at Melbourne, West Coast need anyone that can play the game, Essendon similar.

He wouldn't be the worst option but he has his roots down in Adelaide so I'd wager it'd take a 3 year deal to get him to move and for us not to offer him any contract.

I think he's more likely to get another year than not - but he also would probably take the opportunity to play more somewhere else.

Nicks would most likely had a similar year, though maybe 1-2 games worse off record wise. The big difference between this and previous years is the list. Most of our important kids have now caught up and are performing like key players alongside the shot in the arm from bringing in three quality players in ANB, Peatling and Cumming.

The only thing I wouldn't expect to occur is Curtin's breakout. That's indicative that everything at the club is in a seriously good place.

2 games with an inferior percentage and we’d be a chance of missing the finals. You’d be happy with that?
