ROB a fair bit more expensive now than he would have been at the start of the season.

Credit to him.

I was happy we held off though, even though it will likely end up costing more.
True, but he is already on good money.

Would it be any more than Draper is demanding?

Means Draper is probably off to Brisbane.

Hopefully we're making it a priority to bring in another young ruck we can start developing.
Would rather skip the first few years of development and trade for one. Heath, Ramsden, Knobel. If Draper is still off to Brisbane that makes Henry Smith an interesting watch too.

I would assume that ROB didn't sign expecting to play in the SANFL and we didn't just hand him a new contract to do the same.

The league could ensure any first-band compensation pick comes in only as a mid-first-round pick at pick 11 after the teams who missed finals have their first selections.
Or it could tie the compensation to specific selections in the draft – pick 5, pick 10, pick 20 and so on – which better reflects the size of the player’s contract instead of the team’s ladder position.

Makes way more sense to be specific selections

Whilst West Coast probably need pick 1 and 2, moving forward I don't think any club in the bottom 4 should get two picks in a row because a player leaves. Also if you are top and losie a great player getting pick 17 or 18 is shit when if the same calibre player left a bottom 4 team they get pick 2 or 3 is utter bullshit.

So I like the idea of a set pick and its not based on draft position

Wouldn't mind using one of our third rounders this year on one.
Could rookie Flynn Penry or even bring him over summer to have a look at or even have a look at him in the SANFL team like we did with Toby Murray.

No, but healthy competition always helps. You can even make a case that ROB plays best under some external pressure (contract year or team selection). Also means we have a ready successor if ROB’s form does fall off a cliff.

So, you're not in favour of equalisation?

Have said it a million times, ‘free’ agency means the player has freedom to choose where they go. It doesn’t mean the club that gets them gets them for ‘free’.

Free agency has been an anti-equalisation measure, and the AFL should focus its reforms on getting the beneficiary clubs to pay full price (in draft capital) for the players they get.

Otherwise the rest of the league subsidises a huge advantage given to the club that gets the free agent.

And don’t give me the ‘full credit to Geelong, they’re a destination club, they deserve their success’ line. Do you want a fair comp or do you want the EPL?

We’re never going to have a fair comp until clubs can trade players without consent.

As it stands right now players have way too much power and essentially have free agency. Hell even when contracted, players get to the clubs they want 95% of the time, always when outside of contract.

Should be clubs go get players they want, clubs get most value for their players to highest bidders. Then FA wouldn’t be such a problem because clubs would actually have to balance their salary cap. Allan out? Great you’ve got a million dollars to go take another player from another club. Want to trade Reid? Great, you’ve got 17 clubs offering you picks.

The fact that free agents are leaving bottom teams (when they should have heaps of cap space) to top teams (that should have no cap space) suggests the salary cap isn’t as big part of equalization as the AFL wants you to think.

If NWM stays at St.Kilda
They will be tying up big $$ just with TDK and NWM

Strike while the chance is there, Phillipou
Surprised more clubs didn’t come for the out of contract Marcus Windhager either because of this factor too, been short-changed as a player by Ross Lyon by being forced to tag a bit too much as when he’s actually been left to roam free he can really accumulate and have an influence.

If not NWM, then Ah Chee or Bailey (I’d be happy getting him as a ‘pre-agent’, given we seem to be in the window and have space to front-load)

Or someone like a Phillipou next year

I am not convinced about Archee, only way we get him would be offering way overs. Not sure I'd take him on a 4 or 5 year deal. Bailey I would as he is a few years younger.

I still think we are up to our eyeballs in NWM cant see anyway port get him unless they trade butters

I think Butters will go this year but regardless you need to move past this theory that they can't get a deal done. It will get done. He would of already chosen where he is going, seems more likely to be Port.

I think Ah Chee would still be a very nice 7th forward in our setup. Gives us further best 22 depth in the case of an injury, as he’d be more productive than Taylor or Pedlar

Proven big game performer, too. I’d give him four years, takes him to 31 as he’s a late year birthday
