If we were to give up anyone of value, it would unfortunately be Rachele for a couple of reasons.
Can't give up Worrall, Max, Murray, etc with their chemistry and because they are too important to our backline. We are sort of building a Geelong style intercepting backline.
Can't give up Thilthorpe or Fogarty otherwise there goes our marking forwardline.
Can't give up Curtin or Rankine because of their game breaking talent.
Can't give up Dawson for obvious reasons.
IMO also can't give up Soligo or Draper because we could be still be light in the midfield and want NWM to take us over the edge.
With Rachele, it could open up for Pedlar, Cook or bring in someone like Rosas. And the go home factor.

Why must we give anyone up?

It's not equalisation though, in what world is Oscar Allen worth pick 2 and Buddy Franklin pick 19??

A set pick should be what FA compo is, none of this based on ladder position.

Equalisation isn’t providing equal outcomes, it’s giving more to lower clubs to help bridge the gap. What you describe above is equalisation.

This just isn’t happening though.

This is the list of free agency moves that resulted in first round compensation, and the ladder positions of those clubs that year:

2024
Battle - St Kilda (12th) to Hawthorn (7th)
Cumming - GWS (4th) to Adelaide (15th)
Perryman - GWS (4th) to Collingwood (9th)

2023
Doedee - Adelaide (10th) to Brisbane (2nd)
McKay - North (17th) to Essendon (11th)
Gresham - St Kilda (6th) to Essendon (11th)

2020
Daniher - Essendon (13th) to Brisbane (2nd)
Williams - GWS (10th) to Carlton (11th)

2018
Lynch - Gold Coast (17th) to Richmond (1st)
Lycett - West Coast (2nd) to Port (10th)

2017
Rockliff - Brisbane (18th) to Port (5th)
Motlop - Geelong (2nd) to Port (5th)

2014
Frawley - Melbourne (17th) to Hawthorn (2nd)

2013
Franklin - Hawthorn (1st) to Sydney (4th)
Thomas - Collingwood (6th) to Carlton (9th)

In 8 of those 15 moves, the player has moved to a club that finished lower than their original club. That is the salary cap working as an equalisation measure, and providing compensation only undermines that.

In the moves that would be concerning, Frawley, Rockliff, Lynch and Daniher, only Frawley was an unrestricted free agent. Meaning that those clubs could have matched the offer (as we did with Dangerfield), and forced a trade.

In 12 years of free agency being in place, we have seen that money, lifestyle and on field opportunities are just as significant factors for player movement as chasing success is. We have also only seen one move, where a player on a big contract has moved from a weak club, to a strong club as an unrestricted free agent.

Free agency compensation messes with a draft that is already watered down by academy and F/S picks. It is a messy and ineffective solution to a problem that does not exist in the first place.
You’re including end of first round compo, the discussion was first rd compo, ie pick after your first.

You don’t trade side-ways. Any of our crucial cogs aren’t on the table. We have 3 firsts and several handy fringe players that could have a career elsewhere. It’s not NWM’s value but it should get it done.

It's all about nomination. If he nominates a club, it'll get done. If he says "I just want to go back to SA" then it's a bidding war.

Ultimately I think he has already decided to go to Port, and is waiting until the end of the season to announce it.

Can anyone name a club that’s been on the rise that has traded out a significant chip for an even better chip after a player nominates them.
What did Brisbane give up for Neale?

You don't give up players to trade in uncontacted players
On 11 October 2007, Judd was officially traded to Carlton along with a third round selection in the 2007 AFL Draft (No. 46 overall) for Carlton's first and second round selections (No. 3 and 20) and Josh Kennedy, who was reluctant to leave Carlton.

Kennedy was pick 4 in 2005

And how many flags did Carlton win with Judd.

lol .. well that's 1 of the arguments being presented for a change to the rankings

I in the same boat as others who think that pick 19 for Buddy is manifestly unfair. And pick 2-3 for spuds like McKay, Allen, Draper is complete and utter BS
Make it pick 5 for the absolute A+ players pick 11 for A players and then just picks at the end of rounds for the other grades

That was 18 years ago. It will not happen today

I don't know what the right answer is, but tying a players value to where a team finishes on the ladder just doesn't seem fair

I don't believe for a minute that the intent of free agency was to provide another avenue for equalisation

I always thought it was introduced primarily to promote a valid pathway for player movement
