Petracca at his best is good for us purely because he was that good. And irrelevant of balance, pure talent often wins.

But let's not pretend Petracca is what our midfield needs. Dawson's good, but offensive minded and more outside. Rankine's an offensive guy. Soligo's solid, but more offensive minded & outside. Petracca is the same.

We gave up 1 more ground ball to our opponents this year than we got (ranked #12). Yet post-clearance, we were +4 (ranked #1). We were +2.5 on contested possessions (ranked #8), yet post clearance we were +7 (ranked #1). So in the clearance situations we were -5 on ground balls and -4.5 on contested possessions. We were -2 for clearances (ranked #13). -4.4 for first possession (ranked #17).

Yet we were +1.5 (ranked #5) for gathers from hitouts. All of this in the context of us being +10 for hitouts (ranked #2) and +2 for hitouts to advantage (ranked #4).

That isn't Petracca's game. He's not a clearance guy. He's a good contested possession guy around the ground. But he's best with guys winning it for him. Same as Dawson.

What is utterly baffling is the 20 something year olds in the prime of their careers. If they are considered delist-worthy, how on earth are they getting games ahead of players we obviously rate higher?

As has been noted, Murphy was entirely predictable.

I doubt we'll have 5-6 picks at the ND. The changes to date have only created 2x senior (Murphy & Crouch), 1x Cat A rookie (Schoenberg) and 1x Cat B rookie (Gallagher) list vacancies. Note that Strachan's position has already been filled by McAndrew and Cotton effectively replaces Gallagher (with still room for 1 more Cat B rookie should we find one).

The club is likely to add Ah Chee to the list, and is actively hunting for gun midfielders - the media reported yesterday that we have thrown our hats into the ring for both Merrett and Petracca. Even if we trade 1 or 2 players out (e.g. Butts & Sholl) with Smith & Tex retiring, we still won't have enough vacancies for more than 3-4 new draftees.

Good analysis.

Given our second pick is going to be in the early 40's we wouldn't want many picks and trading future picks into this year's draft doesn't make much sense.

Still not sure what Archee is worth. I know everyone will say a future second but trading away future picks is a mugs game and really limits what you can do 12 months down the track.

If we are so bad at stoppage, and so good outside stoppage (and that seems true to the eye test) do you have an opinion on why have we went with a long-down-the-line game plan which seems destined to generate more stoppages? I don’t get it

Its not that people dont want him, its the cost of doing business to get him.

We were exposed in finals in the midfield, he no doubt helps. But we were also exposed for a lack of transition from the back half, we have poor small forward depth and we will need to sort out our forward structure.
