Looking at it from his point of view. He has spent his entire AFL career at Port, his only reason for a move would be for family reasons. The Crows only have money and a long term contract. He could get that and probably more from Port.
If he was to sign with us, it would permanently break all ties with his former club. And it gets him no closer to his family.
Not to mention the draft picks required to get the deal done.

Why not just not lose Butts? Anyway, Bell is not tracking well after looking good in the preseason, playing against us.
He’s an UFA, it may not be our choice.

I’d absolutely keep Butts and give him a long term contract if it were up to me, unless we can trade him for a high end mid - then I’d roll the dice.

I don’t think that’s only reason for him to move. Port are staring down the barrel of a rebuild.

If he came to us, he fixes one of our biggest weaknesses

No, but the way he's going we'd probably get an end of first round pick for him. Package that up with our natural first and we could be in the running for a top mid. (The problem then becomes whether we rely on a Murray/Keane pairing.)
If we lose Butts (and maybe even Borlase), we’d have to go for a depth KPD or two. Bell in the MSD might be one as a development guy, not sure which depth KPDs are OOC

Look, i don't want to lose him at all from Sturt as he is such a key, but Will Coomblas from sturt has been state CHB / Fullback for a few years running. He is 193cms but he is a damn good defender

Bell looked OK in the preseason trial games but he's been found wanting defensively on occasions in the SANFL proper season. For me currently I'd be in no rush to sign him up unless he makes a fair bit of headway in the lead up to the MSD.

I wonder if we would have gone harder at Sam Draper if we was free agent 1 year later.

Would be a decent pairing for McAndrew
Quite happy to not have done that, but its something we need to address at seasons end.

McAndrew certainly looks the part, but we're only an injury away from having ROB back for an extended period

Walsh is one of 10 original top-30 draft picks among the under-26s on the Blues’ list, while Daicos is one of only five under-26s at the Magpies who were top-30 picks.

Crows have 18 x top 30 players drafted, more than Blues and Pies combined.

And just as importantly is the pointy end. We have stuffed up historically (inc 2018 and 2019) but TT, Rachele and Rankine are all top 5 players for us. So much hope on Curtin and Draper to come good the next 2-3 years. Hamish has hardly put a foot wrong this decade and for this reason, and continuity reasons with Reidy gone, cant see us getting rid of Hamish anytime soon. I do wonder if Tassie will come calling for him at some stage though..

And yes at least one dud below but Dawson and Tex (NSW scholarship) should have easily been top 30 (likely top 5 in reality from their respective drafts without analysing)

Jones
Berry
Ah Chee
Draper
Curtin
Thilthorpe
Rachele
Pedlar
Edwards
Cook
Michalanney
Ryan
Rankine
Worrell
Marsh
Milera
Fogarty
Cumming

Edit 19 top 30s actually as Keays went 24 in 2015 (along with Ah Chee 8, Milera 11 and Dawson 56)

I wonder if it's the other way

We'd be hoping he'd come in with ideas, have an impact

And he'd be keen to impress too

That seems like an end-of-year situation. MSD would be for the most part, Hamish's domain (with a splash of Nicks/Roughhead based on what Nicks wants and how Roughhead wants our outgoings to shape up as).

AFL.com reporting Ah Chee has added 3 years to his initial 2 year deal that was for big money to get him via the PSD.
Isn't this simply an expected readjustment of the initial 2-year contract to 5 years, like everyone else does?

James Van Es if he passed a full medical (previous ankle issues) that saw him never really get a go at the Saints spending most of his time on the sidelines, he would be worth a look at 197cm and over a 100 Kegs with a strong athletic profile Been playing VFL for Port Melbourne since delisted by the Saints. Contingent on the Medical of course.

STRENGTHS:

  • Intercept marking
  • Positioning
  • Rebounding
  • Strength
  • One-on-Ones

IMPROVEMENTS:

  • In-game athleticism
  • Ground balls

James Van Es is a potentially value selection lower down in the AFL Draft order, but is the type of player that could raise interest from certain clubs depending on what they are looking for. On face value, Van Es is just a strong key defender who reads the ball well, positions himself accordingly behind the play, and then holds onto big grabs with consistency. Though on-field he does not always look like being overly athletic, Van Es is a player who has the upside to impact more offensively as per his superb testing results at the National Draft Combine.

At the recent testing event, Van Es topped all-comers in the running vertical jump (98cm) and second in the standing vertical jump (75cm), while ranked second from the key defenders who tested in terms of his agility. Combine that with his 2.91-second 20m sprint, and Van Es on paper is a well-rounded athlete. When he is able to really start punishing teams more by using that on-field, he can take his game to another level. Right now he can leap consistently and easily beat his opponent in that area, but is often a one-on-one defender without a lot of freedom other than when receiving uncontested in the back pockets.
