We're not getting rid of his salary, even if he does get traded. No way we're not asked to pay the bulk of his salary, as one of the trade conditions imposed by the club taking him. We won't be paying the full $700K (or whatever it is), but we'll be paying the bulk of it.

Whilst I tend to agree, we could escape this as long as we’re not shopping around. If he’s seeking opportunities and a club comes to us, we could get him off the books for not much ongoing cost. A bit like how Port paid a first for salary dump players.

We are heading for a weird list balance.

Three a grade mid-fwds - Rankine, Rachele, Bailey

Two very good half-forwards- ANB, Keays.

Only one gun mid (although he’s really the league’s best utility) Dawson

If we do get Bailey, how do we make it work? It’s an unconventional balance of talent. I can’t think of any other teams who have so much more talent in their mid forwards than their mids.

We are not in rebuild mode, so won't be turning over anywhere near thst many players.

Will be about half that number, depending on who we bring in.
We’ve got 3 players on the rookie list that will take spots on the main list. If Bailey and or Neale come in then you need space for them all, plus possibly a first rounder.

I think at least they’ll delist at least:
Dowling
Jones
Scholl
Ryan

One of Butts and Borlase will leave. Maley’s spot could be decided by Tex playing next year.

I will give him his due, I watched the SANFL match (well most of it) and he was jumping at ruck contest.

That's all the good news I's got
At least tag essendon in your post.

There was a story that he was about to but no confirmation yet

If ROB does leave we'll need another ready to go ruckman on the list. Preferably cheap. Not sure either T Murray or Maley are viable No 1 options if McAndrew got injured.

I've given up thinking we might draft a young ruck. Clearly we've decided not to do this under any circumstances
I actually don’t mind our strategy of not drafting ruckman and instead recruiting a back up from another team that looks decent.

They take several years to develop and it’s a lot easier to identify which ones have talent once they’ve spent some time in the AFL system.

But I’m also of the opinion that paying big dollars for a Gawn or Grundy type ruckman isn’t worth it. You get better value from a mid-priced, but reliable ruckman and spending that extra cash on midfield players instead.

Who is going to trade for ROB? He still has 2 years left on his contract, so we can't just delist him either.

I get that ROB is likely to be seeking a trade, and that the club would be willing to help make it happen - but which club is going to want to take him?
You’d think the Crows would pay part of his salary if he does go. So it may be that he stays as a back up option.

Bailey, Rankine and possibly Rachele would play more midfield time than they have previously.

This is why Berry’s development is so crucial. We found our Newcombe. Deadset a very good player now, our Bez.

Borlase is the only one who needs to be upgraded to the senior list urgently. The others still have years to go before they need to be upgraded. They COULD be upgraded at the end of the year, but we don't NEED to do so.

Ah ok, in which case you'd absolutely leave them there. May as well take advantage of the list spots.

Aren't McAndrew, Hall-Kahan and Borlase all on the rookie list?
Yes... but only Borlase needs to be upgraded. This is only McAndrew's 2nd year on the rookie list, and Hall-Kahan's 1st.

I was under the impression that they couldn't, but I definitely don't know either way.
Players can only spend 3 years on the rookie list. Then they are ether upgraded or delisted.

I think James Borlase has reached this point and needs to be upgraded or delisted at the end of the season, and 2027 will be McAndrews 3rd year as a rookie. He’s ok for now.

Players can have a 4th or 5th year, but must not have played more than 10 AFL games.

Don’t think Hugo is a rookie listed player. He was a mid season draft pick and we used the last primary list spot on him.
No, he's 100% on the rookie list. All MSD draftees are placed on the rookie list.

It's only Borlase's 3rd year on the rookie list, so he doesn't need to be upgraded
