I wouldn't ...

2x 23 year/ 1 x 21 year defenders - all agile, all over 191 cm and none has played 100 games yet. All are perfect for modern AFL football.

These are precisely the guys who need to stay - lets not repeat the sins of the past and trade these guys for late picks.

I would expect all 3 to be in our starting 18 by next season.

The problem is that while they play their best footy in the back six none of them are actually defenders. When have you ever watched a Freo game and thought gee, Drum/Mundy/Johnson did an awesome job shutting down player X?

That's one of the main problems with our list. Hayden, Gilmore, Michael Johnson, Head, Drum, Thornton, Mundy and Black all play their best footy down back but only Hayden can shut down a dangerous forward. They are all outside, unaccountable, look good when we're winning, shit when we are losing type players.

Mundy should have been used instead of pick 8 in the Tarrant deal. While his commitment in the last month has been better we have too many of the same type.

here is an idea for freo, lets use this draft especially considering the implications of the two expansion teams to draft some youngster id much prefer to see us getting beaten while playing some young kids rather than watching blokes who couldnt get a gig in other sides . and the answer to harveys question what do we stand for as a club i hate to say it but history tells me that we have always sought the easy and quick solution to the problem rather then fighting it out and showing guts and faith in the young guys.

Defenders
1. McPharlin - great contested mark and ability to play forward/back. Needs to accoutable a little more - keep - 5yrs left - best 22
2. Grover - very accoutable and hitting targets is a problem - 3/4 yrs left. best 22
3. Dodd - accoutable and disciple can be an issue - keep - 5+ yrs left - borderline selection
4. Michael Johnson - very skills and creative needs to work on accoutable - 5+yrs left Best 22
5. Drum - accoutable, and skillful. Needs to decide if he is tall or mid size defender. If he goes tall then work on strength, if a Mid work on speed. 5yrs+. Borderline
6. Thornton - accoutable and breaks the lines well. needs to hit targets and put on weight. 5yrs+ left - borderline/depth
7. Mundy - very skillful and creative. Needs to work on strength and accountablility - 5yrs+ left - best 22
8. Head - have not seen alot of him. Needs play a number of AFL games to stay on the list. 5yrs+. Depth/Delist
9. Druffield - accoutable and breaks the lines needs on his skills. 5+yrs. Depth/delist
10. Hayden - very skillful and creative needs o work on his accounability. 3/4 yrs left. best 22
11. Black - skillful and creative. Needs to show leadership and disciple. 2/3 yrs left. best 22/borderline
12. O'Brien - only seen him play once. 5yrs+. Depth
13. Pratt - havent seen at all. Keep on the rookie list for another year. 5yrs+. Project

Forwards
1. Pavlich - all round players but needs to work on using strength to make space for teamates. 5yrs left. Best 22
2. Tarrant - great on long leads and fast. Needs to work with a head docter. 5yrs. Best 22/borderline.
3. Murphy - great on lead and kicking for goal. Needs to work on contested marks and strength. 5yrs+. Borderline. Keep or possible trade for a least a second pick.
4. Campbell - alot of guts and a blooming kick. Needs to get some more footy smarts. 5yrs+. Depth or Delist if Murphy or Bradley are no longer at Freo.
5. Bradley - tall and can run. Needs to work on skills and see a head docter. 5yrs+. Depth or delist if Cambell or Murphy are no longer at Freo.
6. Mourish - tall and creative. Needs to work on fitness and off the ball. 5yrs+. Project. Keep for another year on rookie list.
7. Solomon - great at contest ball and stoppages. Needs disciple and improve his goal kicking. 2/3yrs yrs. Best 22/Borderline
8. Mayne - hard at it and great on leads. Needs to be a bit more dangerous goals. 5yrs+. Borderline.
9. Farmer - smart and great defensive skills. Needs to work on disciple. 2/3 yrs left. Best 22

Rucks:
1. Sandilands - good tap ruckman and can run well for a big guy. Needs to work on contested mark and maybe play forward a little bit more. 5yrs+. best 22.
2. Warnock - greats skills and speed for 206cm guy. Needs to work on strength and contested marks. 5yrs+. borderline.
3. Gilmore - seems to a jack of all trades. Not sure what his best position. 5yrs+. Borderline.
4. Connelly - tall and mobile. Good project and needs work on his weight and strength. Keep on rookie list for another 2yrs.

Would have thought that drum and head could not be used in the cannot play D summary as they have hardly had a chance. Drum has played how many games and not all in defense.

Still pumping up Murphy? Got to be a monty to be delisted. Doesn't look good on the lead and his kicking for goal was woeful on the weekend. Won't get a trade because noone will want him.

Well Drum has only had 11 games so the jury is not even listening to opening arguments on him IMHO. My mate in the WAFL system tells me he has the makings of a good defender - so I am guessing he most likely to develop into a stopper and not just a rebounder.

MiJ - I agree that he is not the most accountable defender in the league but perhaps we are not using him in the right role? He is very agile and has pretty good skills ....certainly he is a keeper.

Mundy - Well Mundy simply needs to be settled into a position and taught how to play with trips back to the WAFL if necessary. Again he is a reasonably quick, tall ....his rebound from defence is just what we need.

I wish a fit Robbie Hadrill was still on our list ...he and Hayden as stoppers, a roaming McPharlin on the CHF would allow plenty of room for rebound.

However back on point - tading players who we have hand held through their learning phase and then trading them for kids later in the draft sounds like the way we got into this mess in the first place.

You guys might only need to drop a couple of players. At Richmond these players had what we called 'the cancer'. I don't think it's any coincidence that since Bowden and Pettifer have been dropped our performances have improved.

I'll brace myself for backlash, but Pav is 27 next season. After this years draft there may be huge draft concessions for the new clubs. The other 16 clubs will be left picking over the bones.

You're currently looking at a top 4 draft pick, Pav could get you a quality youngster, pick 1-3 and pick 16-20 if you use the Judd trade as a guide.

What sort of club would we be if we traded Pavlich.

The best player we have ever had and if we have any heart at our club, he will play his career at Fremantle.

What we need to do is stay away from trading and just use the draft picks allocated.

4 & 21 will do us nicely.

Though we do notice the last ruckman we sent you is getting a little outdated ...can we interest you in a newer model? The Warnock Ruck2008 is a fantastic buy ...a little pricey at a first rounder but you will be competetive with your neighbours who have the Woodsmobile, Flying Fijian, HilleXLS.

Go on you know you want to.....
