Could just be for socials to distinguish the vfl pages form the afl or aflw or super netball. If it's in that use it is a nice way of creating a backing graphic for the club logo.

But the backing is huge, so they would have to scale the main logo down to fit the backing into wherever it is used. Seems like a silly way to diminish the brand.
