Friday night may or may not be the end of our latest era of glory. We looked tired and overly gorged on success the other night, and that is absolutely understandable.

However, I wouldn't be at all surprised if we re-grouped, turned it round, and used this year as motivation to go again next year, after everyone has written us off. Just like we did in 90-91.

Ultimately, at some point in the next 1-4 years we will fall back off the mountain, and need to re-build. No question about it. And I am ready for it.

Whilst that early-mid 90s period saw us get hit hard by the new equalisation rules put in place specifically to curb our dominance, and go through our darkest period as a club and longest premiership drought since our horrendous early days, I can't see that happening again this time around. Our club is magnificently and intelligently run, we have one of the greatest coaches in history, who is very forward thinking and still young, and I feel hugely confident that, after maybe a few years of pain, we will bounce back BIG and be ready to challenge for a flag again in the next 5-10 years.

What do you think?

Good analogy Roddy, agree we could bounce back next year. A lot will depend upon the trade period this year. JOM / T Michell/ Vickery/ Rough opens the window back up folks

I'm pretty excited about 2017 for a few reasons.

Clarkson will be driven to prove a lot of people wrong, as will the players.

Burton and Sicily will have even more belief and another preseason under their belts.

We will most likely have a Jarman on our list.

Looking forward to a new midfield set up with O'Meara, T.Mitchell and Lovell, and a reformulated game style to match.

Will be keen to see more of Miles, Brand, Hardwick and Stewart.

Plus, the news on Rough sounds promising.

To be brutally honest I'll be very surprised if we see Rough in the brown and gold again. Cancer just isn't like that. The good news is that he is alive, not that he may come back to play for us again.

Will be ecstatic to be proven wrong of course!

We have Sicily, and I feel like I saw just enough from TOB this year to think that he may be something in the medium term future.

You might be right. I had 3 years head to head with the big C at 35. 6 lots of invasive surgery. Diagnosed in 2005 all clear in 2008. Hence my name tag is not just about the last flag I thought I might see.:thumbsu:

Just pointing out he has avoided any surgery which is a huge plus. If the treatment is successful he should bounce back pretty well being young and fit.

How long can we keep clarko motivated?
As long as he's breathing. Country boy with an insatiable appetite for excellence. His greatest strength is his only weakness - his love, commitment and loyalty to his proven soldiers.

He's proven he can make the calls. Brad Sewell was left out of the 2014 grand final after being a proven soldier and our best in 2012.

I think the reports of their death could not be more exaggerated and I'm actually bemused by it all. They were a late swing of an air conveyance away from a home Prelim Final - and one which I believe they would've won, given Sydney's injury toll - and suddenly the great dynasty is over?

Watching Clarko's presser, I didn't see a despondent, distraught, dejected man. I saw philosophical relief and with every word, a little more pressure was released from 12 months of expectation, maybe more. Expectation, not from themselves but far more unforgiving sources - their supporters and the media. Current forum definitely included.

Friday night wasn't great but the path to the GF was probably not going to involve the one they found themselves on. However, I'm sure Clarko had the plan to beat the Dogs worked out but unfortunately the umpires didn't fulfill their part of a 100 year old bargain, something about incorrect disposal of the ball by hand or foot when tackled legally. Over 100 tackles isn't coincidental, it was a deliberate but risky commitment of 1, 2 or 3 players to take themselves out of the play to win a free kick. Risky, yes. Rewarding, obviously not. As Clarko hinted, he won't be making that mistake again.

That pressure is now off. They are no longer the hunted, will not be the reigning premier and will hopefully be able to develop some Intellectual Property they can hang onto for a few years. The last 3 Octobers I have felt elated, contented and satisfied about the premierships but not genuinely excited about the following year. This feels different. Not Richmond or North excited which involves spoofing your tweeds when your next great saviour manages to crack 70 SuperCoach points but a genuine and justified belief that Trade Week will return this side back to the realm of the feared again We will hopefully snare 2 genuine ready-to-go A Grade stars and a ruckman/forward who may just be a great culture and good barber away from being a handy player. At worst, a new scapegoat that will fill the shoes of those that may depart to make room for the triple figure fantasy footballers

Anyway, I'm now game enough to watch the replay of Friday's game but the mounted photo of me holding the 3 cups is always at arms length should a tear appear in my beer.

Rejoice fellow Hawkers, for this is not the end of the world, nor is it doom and gloom. It's just the recession we had to have.

Nah Andrew Jarman article in the Adelaide Advertiser couple weeks back strongly suggested it'll be Hawks.

Nothing definite, mind, but it seemed pretty definite.

Incorrect. He will be a project but we have committed to him. Great mates with Ryan Burton. Future looks bright.

Wow!

I totally ignore all mainstream football 'media' these days. Titus hadn't mentioned this news in tweets or his podcast so missed this article.

ADELAIDE is poised to overlook son-of-a-gun prospect Ben Jarman at this year’s AFL national draft, leaving Hawthorn in the box seat to claim him according to his uncle, inaugural Crow Andrew Jarman.

“I have a gut feel that Ben will be playing at the Hawthorn Football Club next year,’’ Andrew said.

I just want to be there when the Big Rough plays his first game back and just delivers a monster goal on the run from 55 thirty seconds into the game.

His first game back will be HUGE !!
