As Collingwood and Adelaide are probably gonna be real contenders in coming years, I think it would be good to look at Collingwood and Adelaide's 4 main young midfielders and compare them as a group. This is not to be another "my dad is stronger than your dad" thread but hopefully an objective discussion.

Pendlebury/Sidebottom/Beams/???(who would best fit) vs Vince/Dangerfield/Otten/Mackay.

Promising signs for both midfields. Although I think the Crows forward line will probably be their strength.

I want to emphasise that this is not intended to include current midfielders older than these guys its more about projecting forward looking at these younger midfield groups.

We do already have a it of a Rivalry as we played you the last 3 Years in the Finals and Beat you all 3 Times;)

Think it's set to Continue and we could possibly meet in the Grannie this year

mids under 23 or under this year -
Scott Pendlebury, Dayne Beams, Steele Sidebottom, Dale Thomas (will increase midfield time as career continues), John McCarthy (injury prone but when healthy has been promising), Sharrod Wellingham (played much of 2009), Jaxson Barham (real energy guy, has huge tank and super speed), Brent Macaffer (playing as a utility now but could move up to midfield as he develops), Josh Thomas (inside mid from this years draft class. quality), Ben Sinclair (outside mid from this years draft class), Ryan Cook (Tagger who is good at VFL level but probably not afl level).

We have a list gap with few players born between 80-86. But from 87 onwards we have plenty of depth.

Top 4: Scott Pendlebury, Dayne Beams, Steele Sidebottom, Dale Thomas .

The strength of our list is probably our young midfield depth now.

2 years Dave
In 09 we beat adelaide and lost to the saints and the cats
In 08 we beat adelaide and lost to saints
In 07 we beat sydney and west coast then lost to geelong
In 06 we lost to the Bulldogs
04/05 never happened
In 03 we beat Brisbane and Port Adelaide and lost to brisbane
In 02 we beat Adelaide and Port Adelaide and lost to brisbane

So we have never lost to a South Australian side in finals and well never will but we have only met the past 2 years in finals

Don't think we beaten a Melbourne based club in the finals since '90. Off the top of my head i can't think of when we did since then. Time for a change...

we havent

since 1990 we have played Geelong twice, St.kilda thrice and the Western Bulldogs and lost to all of them
to finish of my list or finals appearances, from 1990 to know
94 lost to west coast in west coast, McGuane missing a mark late which would have resulted on an easy shot on goal
92 lost to st.kilda
90 beat essendon twice, beat west coast and drew with west coast as well

Daisy & McCarthy will be our 4th & 5th Mids in that age bracket that I feel confident will assert themselves.

Daisy just busts himself too much. He needs to be a little smarter when running around the ground. You cannot doubt his effort but hopefully Bucks will teach him how to go about it a bit beter, without him spending himself so quickly.

slight correction
92 we lost to saints
94 was the west coast game where mcguane dropped the mark

I'm obviously biased, but I'd take ours at the moment. Vince looks the best of the lot, followed by Pendlebury. These two are the only sure things in the list. I like the look of Otten, but I personally think that he projects as a back flanker more than a mid, as he isn't really an insider and doesn't hurt enough to play as an attacking outside mid. I also like Dangerfield as a forward flanker more than a midfielder. for the pies I'm incredibly optomistic about Sidebottom and also think that Beams will become a good midfielder.

If I put my Collingwood hat on I would have to rate them as follows:

<> Pendlebury
<> Vince
<> Dangerfield
<> Thomas
<> Beams
<> Sidebottom
<> Otten
<> Mackay
<> J-Mac

Not sure about the easy goal part. Would have been 50 to 55 out on a decent angle. The match was dubbed mission impossible and we nearly pulled it off.:)

I always loved micky

I had no doubt he would have kicked it if he got the chance

Adelaide are going to be a force in 2 years. I think a flag is almost a certainty barring incredible misfortune through injury, or inability to keep the list together, vis Tippett or Dangerfield.

I honestly think in terms of young midfielders we are fairly even, but Adelaide's young forward brigade is actually really scary. Walker is a freak, 97kg and top 5 for their recent 3k time trial, and is working well on his forward pressure which let him down slightly in 2009. His SANFL record as a young bloke is amazing - 56 odd goals as a young bloke against men is phenominal. Tippett is self explanatory. Dangerfield playing up forward, etc etc.

I would rate the young midfielders:

Vince
Pendlebury (close to Vince)
Dangerfield
Beams
Mackay (gets no victorian love, but will be a weapon)
Sidebottom
Thomas
McCarthy
Otten - Only this low because I think he's an attacking, creative back flanker, not a pure mid.

2007... Sydney...West Coast... Geelong.

Idiot.

Tad harsh?

I take it you've never made a mistake in a casual conversation re footy?

Plenty... but I generally do at least some basic research when I make attempt to rile opposition supporters up.

Plus Posting like This Makes my head Hurt.

dont read it? or go back to TAE if its that bad?

Hardly difficult tarko

As we have mentioned B. Vince who is now 24 yrs old - i with some poetic license would like to nominate Heater (younger than Bernie) ahead of all bar Pendles - Heater's run and carry could easily be seconded by MM into the midfield. The rest of those names make pretty good reading!

Good thread there are some decent similarities with where both sides are at and it projects as a decent rivalary in years to come.

In answer to your question both sides have deep rotating midfields. I'd say J-mac and Thomas are the two best mid types that aren't on the list you have.

I think what our midfield group has over yours is players who can have a high match influence. With all due respect the high possie game style Adeliade tend to play cushions the stats of the midfielders a tad. They are all good hard runners and good users of the ball but I think other then Vince there isn't a real game dominater. Pendleburry is crazy good in that regards and Beams seems to be right up there too.
