I weighed 94kgs when I joined the Navy, late January. At Easter I weighed 78kgs when I had a visit home. It hurt.

Why do so many guys want flat stomachs? Don't get me wrong, abs are great, but I love a bit of a pooch.
I think partly because it is so damn hard to get. You can hit the gym and put on muscle elsewhere and (to an extent) still have it visible you've made the effort, even with a higher body fat %. Abs unless you are really tight with your nutrition, hit the weights and do some sort of cardio to strip fat aren't going to appear, even if you do 1000 sit-ups a day. More than anything else they indicate a person is fit and takes care of themselves.

We feel shit with a protruding stomach, because it's constantly THERE right in front of us. Even a small one makes your pants tight and you can't wear a fitted shirt (i.e. anything fashionable) without feeling ridiculously self-conscious.

The first place I put excess weight on is my stomach and my arse, and it only takes a few kilos before I feel like I am waddling everywhere. I hate it with a passion.
Fair enough, didn't really know that men cared that much about it. You'll lose the self consciousness as you get older though.

What do guys think of girls' stomachs? I've heard mixed opinions...guys that absolutely hate stomach fat, and guys who think flat stomachs are disgusting.

I'd honestly hate to be with a girl who was ultra toned/flat stomached. That stems from her probably making me feel inadequate, however, puppy fat is pretty good in my opinion. Makes me feel the girl is human, not some sort of health/fitness robot.

How old, 70, 80?

I like girls flat tummies, but love nothing better than a cut and muscular back/shoulders. The type on female rowers. Mmmm.

When you realise 'Hey, everyone else my age is fat, there's no point in caring anymore'. Plus all the food you eat will go straight to your stomach as you get older anyway, male or female. Notice how so many 50+ year olds have huge bellies but the skinniest legs?

To each their own, but muscle on a girl freaks me out. Not that I like girls anyway

Whatever, really. All else being equal, generally I think girls carry stomach fat better than guys due to their body shape. The fashions available to them also help, if she's a good dresser.

In terms of physical attractiveness, I think most guys would reel off a long list of things before they got to 'flat stomach'. If you asked girls to do the same thing for guys, I imagine it would be a lot closer to the top.

Basically, although well-toned people of either gender are attractive, curves are never sexy on guys.

I lost 31 (since put 7ish back on) basically by eating right... When the weight loss resulting directly from dietary changes slowed down, I just exercised more... Seemed to keep things ticking over nicely.

Then I went on honeymoon... then Xmas... Now I've got more to lose!

Age is no excuse to let everything go. I see guys and gals in their 60, 70's and I'm sure a couple of ones in their 80's at the gym. And think, good on them, that's what I want to be like at their age.

Girls can carry (within reason) a small stomach. It's another reason guys want abs. A stomach of any size just doesn't look good on a guy (flat is fine, doesn't have to be a six-pack). I think I'm like most guys in that girls on the spectrum from 'curvy' (but not obviously fat) through fit (ie. flat stomach, minor ab definition) is all good. Female body build type girls with abs that ultra defined not attractive.

Yeah, a lot of girls would have abs at or near the top of their 'dream guy' list, but it's more of a bonus than anything. Every girl wants a guy with abs, but we don't go around expecting it/using it as a measurement as to whether we would date him or not. If the guy has a decent face, we couldn't really care less whether he's got the flat stomach or not. If he does, cool, it's just something to brag/gush to our friends about.

If I were a guy that needed exercise, I'd work on my biceps as much as my stomach. I think stick arms are something I would be more ashamed to have as opposed to a chubbier stomach.

Age is no excuse to let everything go.
I think you have misunderstood me. I'm not pro older overweight people, nor against. I'm stating facts, that a lot of them just tend to let go with age.

All else being equal I would rather be lean and toned than have big guns and a round stomach. I don't know which girls tend to prefer, but the former makes me feel much better. Nobody wants to be a stick, but I cannot stand the feeling of carrying unnecessary flab around

I'm used to it.

I want to get un-used to it.

Good for you Caesar:thumbsu: I'm glad you're doing what makes you happy

I was more talking about if I were to have a little pooch though, not a full on firm, round potbelly. Obviously if I had a potbelly and tiny arms, I'd work on the belly.

As for what most girls like...a balance between nice arms and a nice stomach is ideal, but it's not up to us. If not that balance, then I'd rather he's just average sized instead of only one of those qualities. I've seen guys with real nice abs, but arms like an 8 year old girl and I've seen guys with arms like Tarrant, but their bellies are bigger than Uluru. Doesn't look too flash, but I'm sure there are a lot of girls who would claim otherwise. To each their own tastes

Was 84kg in March last year and am now down to a tad under 76kg. No dieting or anything, just gathered some self-discipline and gradually worked myself into a cycle of healthier eating and more regular exercise. I'm very confident I'll be able to retain this routine, as I feel much better with this compared to my old routine of not eating healthily enough and irregular exercise.

Just one thing- I'm 17 years old, a smidgeon under 5' 8", and am more concerned about feeling healthy and retaining this cycle than setting a target weight. But, is 76kg still too big for my height? I have a vague desire to weigh around 70kg and to have a lean physique, however would the 76kg I'm at now be acceptable considering I may have some more growing to do?

Don't really have much of a gut which is good, just generally have a short and stocky frame.

It sounds a little heavy to me, but I'm no expert on these things.

I'm 5'11 and my goal weight is 72kg, which will be reasonably lean without being skinny.

Just checked my BMI and it came up as 26 (86th percentile, which is a tad overweight), but BMI calculators can be unreliable. Have a fair bit of muscle too so that probably adds a few kilos I guess.

Might just see how I go, if I get to 70kg then I get there. I'm much more concerned about feeling healthy and fit than reaching a particular target weight.

Depends on you're build.

Some bloke have broad frames and at near 6 foot will be over 80kg if they have any muscle mass.

When I went away to Perth for Christmas, was weighing in at 85-85.5, get back to Brisbane from Perth and I was back at 87.5. 2 Kilos doesn't seem like all that much, but when you cant get motivated to try and lose it again, and you eat what you like it takes ages to come off.. I am almost there though back to 86 this morning, however if I did some exercise I would already be back there.

100% unreliable.

My Dexa scan based on fat, bone density and muscle mass has my healthy range between 70.2 and 74.4
At 70.1 i will be at the upper limit of lean, now if i use 70.1 in the BMI scale it has me at 25, and according to them 24.9 is acceptable and 25 is at the lower range of overweight.

Lean to overweight without adding any kegs

Hey, just because you failed the IQ portion of the test and had to join the Army...

BMI is a good general guide. Don’t take it as gospel and aim for an exact reading . If you’re around about where they say you should be, you’re fine.

It’s the people that completely blow BMI out of the water that should be worried. Professional athletes do as well, but they’re going to have full-time nutrition and lifestyle support anyway.

Unless you’re a pro bodybuilder (which a lot of amateurs like to think they are, but they’re not), BMI is good general gauge that you can look at. I believe that if you can honestly say you’ve been practicing a healthy diet and lifestyle for some time, your body will find it’s “natural” weight if you want to call it that. It’ll be stable. If that’s a little above the prescribed BMI, so be it.

Just be honest with yourself about your lifestyle – that’s the hard part! You should try to practice a completely healthy diet and lifestyle for a while, your weight will stabilise and you’ll find your ideal weight. That’ll give you something to measure against for a while, then do it again if your lifestyle changes.
