Re: Luke Ball...

As for the actual qn, I'd be fairly strongly against getting him. Partly because I think he's been consistently over-hyped throughout his career, but mainly because we have more than enough inside types as it is.

Agree with this comment, I think its because he was taken #2 in the super draft and showed promise from a young age though injury has stopped him becoming one of the superstar mids he could have been.

I'd still trade for him as he is a tackling clearance machine - had something like 11 tackles on the weekend which isn't uncommon for him. Goes at it as hard as anyone in the AFL but I'm pretty sure the price tag would be to high and I doubt St Kilda would trade him nor would he want to leave.

He's no good and I would be furious if we gave up anything to get him. To go for a player who was never an a-grader when he is finished and injury riddled is a recipe for disaster. Like others I would prefer Diledio but he is an unrealistic target - he's a star and we wouldn't part with what they would want for him.

Even at his best Ball was overrated and was only aa one year because the selection panel were in love with st kilda's young players at the time. they picked heaps of saints mids that year and ball (nowhere near) didn't deserve his selection. O'Bree has been better, is better and we would go backwards if we moved in that direction. I would much rather bank on Sidey and/or mccarthy to become that player - much more upside and less baggage, not to mention skill. I can't stand Barham as a player and he is ball with pace - again more upside imo.

Ball = overated, overpaid and over there.

LeDildo I don't know is much better. Inconsistent and not much ticker. Might prosper with some talent around him, but that's a might.

Still need a ruck as top priority as Josh has had a heavy workload and ain't no spring chickadee anymore. Wood has been good but we need some back up. Since they take a few years to develop, best bring one on now if we can or trade for a North etc excess ruck.

The thing about Ball is that his body is decimated, injuries have pretty much turned him into a purely in and under player and we already have a capable one in O'Bree. As other posters have stated he has absolutely no power in his legs, cannot kick over 35 metres and just isn't the kind of player you'd go out of your way to get. If we were to look for a pure inside mid for the future it would be someone like Swallow of the Kangas, but really I don't think this is an area of need given the way we have drafted over the past few years.

Deledio is not a player I would like to chase either. Serious question marks still remain over his commitment, team ethic, hardness at the footy... has all the talent in the world and could be a top 10 player if he applied himself but I've seen little to suggest that he'll be anything but Richmond's answer to Danyle Pearce. In any case, Richmond will ask for too much for him, he is after all a number one draft pick and a best and fairest winner there.

We need to chase a star forward or a top tier, physically competitive ruckman who actually allow us to gain real ascendancy in the middle. Those should be our priorities heading into 2010 in terms of trading.

If we where to go for a mature aged mid in trade week, (wich i highly doubt) i think Luke Ball would be the last player on the list.

No doubt Luke Ball is a gun player "when fit", but his kicking realy lets him down. I think since his bettles with OP, Ball has failed to make the distance with any shots on goal from beyond th 50.

Besides that, Collingwood is full of sh*thouse kicks, so why would we want another.

Have a big crack at Delidiot i say!

Unless we can pick up a "gun" player, we can't go throwing away draft picks on players who would struggle to make our best 22.

So unless a Pavlich or Deledio is available, keep all our picks and build our list up, as draft picks are worth double this year with the 2 new sides stealing them all from now on.

Cos there was so much hype around Cameron Wood it wasnt deemed necessary. The Saints picked up King with pick 90 or thereabouts didnt they? What did we get? Corrie!!!!!!!!!

If we fail again this year alot will have to do with the ruck (AGAIN!!).

F****n joke.
Our policy is not to draft recruits that are too old.

Too much risk in taking Steven King, hence why he was passed.

Too much risk???? what do you risk picking up a player who costs nothing yet can contribute to a position where you lack depth? At worst they dont make it and spend the year in the VFL just like a couple for us.
FWIW Id rather King on our list the last two as opposed to Chris Bryan.

Luke Ball

there has been alot of post of potential trades..

and i think Luke Ball will fit perfectly in our midfield

struggled too make it most of the season and was good enough to make the finals side.

i dont see why we shouldn't go for him when he is still only 25 and has another 6-7 years left in him.

hes a B&F at his club and has been all-australian.

get on him pies :thumbsu:

I believe Collingwood should go after this bloke he fills the gaps that are needed in many areas in our young midfield. great clearance player, strong body and outstanding leadership quality's. he seems to be a bit out of favor at st kilda getting limited game time, He is a player who i think could be used to his full potential at a club such as collingwood.

what trade could we do to get him to our club?

Re: Luke Ball

I would love to have Luke Ball at Collingwood he is exactly what is needed in our midfield right now. Im not sure who we would give up for him though. Maybe a small forward since Saints need a good one, or even Cox and another player for him i dont know. Highly unlikely we will get him though. Kind of unrealistic.

Re: Luke Ball

And what happens for the 20 dry games we play for the year?

Luke Ball showed during the finals he can play in the wet/slippery conditions, but nothing else.

Not worth picking up, he has major injury problems and will be finished by the time he is 27-28.

We shouldnt be blowing draft picks (through trade) on mids anyway, we need KPP's more.

Medhurst or Davis for Ball?

Re: Luke Ball

Medhurst or Davis for Ball?

No way.

Medhurst was AA last year and a proven goalkicker/matchwinner. Was restricted this year because of injury. He is a gun.

Davis has developed as we all had hoped for him. Is an A-grader now and an AA this year.

Ball was once an A-grade talent. Injuries have cruelled him. He is a shadow of his former self. It's amazing to think how far Hodge and Judd have gone past him.

Re: Luke Ball

nah 6 shit games from both of them... we shouldnt be writing of these boys.
maybe cox, mccarthy, reid or stanley could be up for trade?

Not Reid, he is being groomed as our CHB & not McCarthy, he will be one of our inside mids that we need, once he puts on a bit of bulk.

Cox & Stanley wouldn't go anywhere near to getting a trade done for Ball.

Re: Luke Ball

Far too many injuries for mine and i would think the game may have passed Ball by.
Still a decent player no doubt but the Saints would want a second rounder and player minimum so i would think the risk is too much.
Would rather have a go at Tuck for a token draft pick and not have our recruiting compromised on a player with with huge question marks for the price he would cost.

Re: Luke Ball

Wouldn't mind him, but I think the price we'd have to pay would be too steep. Our midfield is not bad, there are other areas that need more attention right now, namely our ruck and KPF stocks.

Re: Luke Ball

As has been mentioned because he was in their best 22 at the end of the year and they as a group would feel they are close to a premiership he is not going to want to leave. Therefore his cost will grossly outweigh his potential gain. We rubbish O'Bree regularly, Ball will more then likely end up going down a pretty similar path albeit slightly better.

Re: Luke Ball

Luke Ball would be our best centre square clearance player by a country mile but we won't risk his injury status and even if we did we wouldn't offer enough to get him becuase we are very conservative. I don't know St. Kilda would want but I would expect a few clubs to make a bid if he was on the table. I have seen the name Cox mentioned but realistically he has very little currency. He will most likely be delisted. Wellingham might be worth a trade back to WA for a pick or an upgrade which might help with a Ball trade. If you could trade Wellingham back to WA you might just get something extra for throwing Cox into the deal.
