Luke Mcguane...

I used to hate McGaune and it takes a lot for me to change my mind on a player due to my stubbornness. He has come along way though and has improved ten fold. To me though I think if we can get a good offer which I think is possible we should trade him to Gold Coast. They will be looking for KPP around his age bracket so we should be able to get a handy pick. Maybe early second round?? A little optimistic but it is unknown what they are willing to offer due to all their picks.

No Thanks. Mcguane is a keeper.

Macguane is no Sam Gilbert!

Macguane if to be considered seriously long term needs to get a lot more strength and power from his lower body and legs. His balance and pose in the contest needs to be a lot stronger by improving his mass in mentioned areas.

To me at the monent he doesn't have the skill for a third tall def, the bulk of a CHB or the strength of a FB. His kicking is not fantastic either. So to be considered any chance in a finals team he needs to add power and strength and size to his lower core and legs.

Only trying to be constructive as I see it because I hope all our players can be the best they want to be!
here here well said. ive been trying to say exactly that for ages.
my problem is i just cant see mcguane ever significantly gaining the bulk and core stenght and we all know he hasnt the skills.

to improve we must be looking to do better than luke. if we can get a decent trade or pick for him we must do it. as for delisting well atm he plays until a better rounded player steps up or is found.

how much time madone hes 23 yr 6 and hes no different to what he was 3 yrs ago. he doesnt have much time left.
Did he shag your missus or something?
Compared to the skinny runt from Queensland drafted in the 70s who got murdered by MickyO in his first game to what he is now, I'd say his progress has been quite acceptable.

lol
hes still a skinny runt and if he played on micky o today or tomorrow who i dont rate he would still get murdered.
and your right. he has progressed. about as far as his ability will allow and unlike you i think it is not acceptable.
i want to see this club actually progress and become a force in time it wont happen with the likes of mcguane.

He's improved alot. Very good stopper. Takes a pretty good forward usually and rarely gets more than 3 goals kicked on him. I have no problem that he occasonally has an ineffective kick or a bit of clanger because I know he's a nice kick of the ball and is usually effective. He just turned 23 and should be at his peak when he's 25 and he will improve in size and reduce errors as he gains experience. I rate him as a pretty good defender and a must keep. He'll probably be 192cm and 95kg by the time he is 25 and he'll be a very good player. He and Thursfield are 2 key backman for our future. He was recruited in 2004, he's played 5 seasons at the club and you don't expect a tall to do much at all in their first year and maybe play 8-10 games in their 2nd year. His progress has been completely normal and it would be hilariously stupid to trade him to the GC and waste all that work and throw away a quality player. Thursty and Mcguane i expect to be 2 of the better tall defenders in the comp in a couple of years. Post will form a very good tall defensive trio ;)

good for you at least you stick to what you believe. even if i totally disagree.

We will agree to disagree then.

You just want a champion in every position on the ground
Brian Lake was probably no better than Mcguane when he was 23. I don't remember Scarlett being a star then either. It takes about 7 years to build a quality player and Mcguane has played 5 years and is on his way to becoming that. If you want to get rid of him and go backwards another 4 years in finding a replacement then good luck ;)

He's slim but he has a wide frame and is pretty strong. He's far from a stick though and will be pretty solid in a couple of years.

I really don't see the knock on McGuane, he has some terrific attributes for a key defender, in agility, contests like a threshing machine, can take a grab and handles the pill cleanly. Ross Glendinning he aint but he compares pretty well to alot of tall defenders going around. In any case we have far greater probs than Luke Mcguane in our current side

And now we can close the thread :thumbsu:

Our best defender in my opion once we start to build a good side if we do i reckon our defence will be a lot better as when we play well the defence provides a lot of run.A good exsample of this is when we played fremantle last year.

I see no difference in any of Mcguane/Polo/Thursty/Moore.
Their the same style of player.
They all play great games every now and then, and have all been scrutinized over their lack of deision making skills at times.
Whoever comes on the best over the next year or two should be kept, and 1 or 2 need to go imo. (after we find our bigger/Taller FB...Goudis?)

I like McGuane, and I certainly think he is one of our best (not that that is necessarily a good thing). There are too many players that are useless for us to worry about the players that are OK. He's not the best ever defender but he does his job and generally does it well. He has improved immensely over the past year, and I hope he continues to improve (unlike other players who improved and then slid backwards just as quickly). I also like the way he shows his emotions - I'm tired of robots.

I agree. McGuane would be good as a third tall, running defender. He does have some good attributes, however he is not big enough to be a kpd. Gourdis could be developed as FB, with his size and athleticism he would be an ideal match up for the power full forwards. Post will look good as the CHB. Thursfield isn't a bad defender but isn't big enough to match up on the big forwards in one on one contests consistently. Moore should go. Thursfield should be kept as a depth player in case of injury and be replaced if one of Gourdis or Rance can play FB. Keep McGuane as the third tall defender.

Thursfield is just as good as Mcguane and they are the same height(192cm) and weight(90kg). They are no shorter than many tall defenders in the afl and they can easily reach 95kg in a year or 2. Both players must play and Post(195cm, 94kg) will be the 3rd tall. Gourdis and Rance will be the spare tall if needed. We have enough quality talls in defence for the future and when they add another 3-5kg they'll be very good. We need to concentrate on the forward line and get games into Astbury and Griffiths this year so they can support Reiwoldt

useful if he gets the right matchup dont forget our backs tend to look a lot worse because they are often defending fast breaks from turnovers........besides if we keep mcguane and connors in the team other teams will struggle to intimidate us as those two love flying the flag.

Post - Fisher
Gourdis - Dawson
Thursfield - Blake
McGuane - Gilbert

Works for them.

Bradshaw only really kicked 3 goals on Mcguane though. Simmonds gave him his first goal with an elbow to someones head giving away a free up the ground to Bradshaw
Watch Geelong's back play, they stick to their men, and only run off when the ball is won, or contested. McGuane sits up to 10 metres off his man when the ball is in the middle, sorry it's just wrong to give your man that much space.

You can't claim that's the only way to play. Watch St. Kilda and they all play off their players somewhat, and it works wonders for them, allowing them to beat forwards that should be destroying their defenders 1 on 1.
