I know young Marty doe's not have all the skills of most others on the list but bloody hell you have got to admire his tenacity at both the ball & the man, i lost count of the number of tackles he laid last night & i would think he is worth persevering with in the hope he can improve himself in areas of his game that needs it.

His tackles were more than overshadowed by the amount of times he burnt the ball or got run down.

I understand where you're coming from but if one percenters, tough and courageous acts alone validated a spot on our list then Trent Ormond-Allen would be nearing his 200th game.

Exactly. Skipworth deserved a game before Mattner, he was good in the pre-season and his disposal has been very precise for the Eagles.

But they put Mattner in there for a reason. His tackling is always superb and like Noddy said, he might not be a star but he tries so hard. I would continue playing him for now ;)

Mattner is a freak when it comes to tackling but he has bugger all skill. If we could get Mattner's desperation, tackling and hardness and combine it with the skills and other attributes of Chris Ladhams we would have a star.

I can remember him getting run down once by P Burgoyne on the outer wing when he was going at SANFL speed rather than at AFL.

I can't remember any other occasion.

He was chosen to do a role last night, and I thought he did it pretty well.

I've never been a real Mattner fan, and it'll take more than one game to get me there, but credit where it's due - he should get a game again next week on that effort.

I remember two other times when he hesitated and was taken from the front, resulting in a panicked handball to no-one.

Agree on his effort, but he's no AFL footballer.

I was quite impressed with Mattner, his tackling was great, and when he rundone Burgoyne near the boundryline and got that holding the ball desicion and then the 50m penelty was great work he worked hard to bring Burgoyne to ground, deserves another crack next week;)

have to say...I bagged the **** out of him on Saturday night, but when I watched the replay today, he wasn't as bad as I thought! haha

He came into the side ( to much surprise) and done well. Burton turned the ball over as much as Mattner.

Goodluck to Marty. I hope hes persisted with too.

Ladhams' statfest against Centrals and the fact he'd be coming up against his old club this Friday night might throw a spanner into the works.

Was thinking the same thing. Ladhams has been playing some very good footy for the last 3 or 4 weeks and is getting possesions at will.

Should we read anything in the fact that Bode and Gallagher spent minimal time one the ground.

The likes of Scott Stevens, Biglands, Ladhams and possibly Hart and Reilly are up for selection. It will be interesting to see what we do at selection table this week.

Interesting? Of course they will bring in Biglands and probably Hart, then they will chuck Reilly back to Sturt and he will get a season ending injury in the opening minutes...got the script right here :(

And it sounds a damn sight better than any of the Star Wars prequels...

I was too busy abusing Burton to bag Mattner. I have to admit I didn't notice a lot of him at the game, but when I got home and watched the tape he laid some great tackles.

I would like Reilly back in the side BUT he has not put his selection beyond doubt. When he does he will come straight back in. I think he should be learning how to protect himself better if he wants to play AFL footy. If he continues to leave himself open the way he does he will spend more time in medical rooms that on the footy field. Whether it be with Sturt of Crows he needs to protect himself better if he wants to have a career in footy.

And knowing Brent, he will too.

He does it deliberately... just like Peter Vardy before him and Matthew Liptak before him...

Back to Mattner, I was fairly impressed with his game overall and I thought his presence in the packs with his tackling and harassment was 1st rate and added to our extra [and seemingly long lost] aggression that GA wants to see.

I believe [and have said this before] that GA rates Mattner and is prepared to give him a go whereas others maybe wouldnt.

Mattner was asked to do a job shutting down Schofield, who tends to lift in showdowns. Schoey wasn't as damaging as usual & the 9 tackles by Marty typified the pressure we placed on Port.

All the coaches rate Mattner highly. I remember last year Neil Craig said that while he isnt a fantastic player with all the moves, he gives 100% all the time and he can always be relied upon.

They all like those types of players. Everyone does.

YEs -agreed- I was very happy to see Schofield having little impact on the game - he has burnt us before.
