"I booked tickets for a Player dinner night at the club some time ago and it was last night. I was undecided whether to go but decided why not and I am glad I did.
I arrived early to see the players train and thought I would let you know.
Firstly the mids and rucks spent some time practicing stoppages went the ball was on the ground.
Then they spent a lot of time with stoppages and clearances as in normal game play by following right through to kicking for goal or if the player was caught, bringing it back and starting again. Interesting to see that Fas was in there too.
They look sharp as was the tackling, kicking and handball. Don’t know why they can’t carry it out on game day. Standouts were Treloar, Varcoe, Blair and Crisp.
Then they also played a mini game and again the kicking, tackling was very good. Grundy was pulled aside by Bucks at one stage about his rucking (I presume) as he still was not getting it right and was clearly beaten by Witts or Cox, he did improve though after that.
Not involved were: Ellliott, Shaz, Williams, Adams, Goldsack, Cloke although Cloke and Goldsack spent a lot of time goal kicking which was very accurate.
Pretty confident we will get back Varcoe but not Adams. Was very surprised to see how well Eliiott train at one stage (warm-ups_ I presume?). He was running, kicking and marking very freely, I really think he will be back some time this year within weeks. Didn’t seem affected in that drill, I suppose it will depend how he goes with contact.
At the dinner, wasn’t sure what to expect, maybe a couple of players but the roll call was great. Scott Cummings was the MC
Brown – talked about how they are responsible, not tackling hard enough, poor decision making, not putting their head over the ball.
Broomhead – Out for at least 4 weeks, same injury as Langdon. Loves the club and was happy to resign.
Maynard – Talked about the need to improved and the pressure of playing back.
Shaz – Loves the club is settled and now even better as his girlfriend had come over. Apparently Eliott has bought a home next door to him and hopes he will be a good neighbour. News: Will be going to America next month to see the same Dr. that treated Menzel.
Wills – quite interesting, born in NZ, wasn’t tall enough or good enough as a junior, went overseas for a year and grew a fair bit, he felt he had matured and decided to give it another go. Missed out on TAC coming through the VFL, happy to be here and looking to break through.
Golds – quite a funny character, very confident. He has a Tattoo of Batman on his rib cage (MagpieBat will be jealous, Haha)
Degoey – very serious young man, admitted he needs to work on his defense, but no second best for him. Love him! Someone in the audience asked him a question re motivation!!! He replied that they have coaches for almost everything including a Duty of Care and Mind Coach, at the best club going around and if that doesn’t motivate you well nothing can. Players don’t respond to rave and rant anymore. Something that I totally agree with.
Crisp – very happy to be here, he too is very settled in his personal life and looking to working hard to ensure Pie success, playing a different role and relishing the challenge.
Varcoe – will play assuming he gets through Thursday but can’t see him not playing. Has a 12 yo and 2 yo daughters – wow big gap. Made a funny joke about injuries 4-12 weeks is short term.
Cox – lives very close to Moore and hang out together, still a lot to learn but enjoying it
Treloar – what a character! Opened up by saying he NEVER had any intention about going anywhere else but us. Talked about his pre-game ritual, just got engaged, has over 110 NBA shirts which he has alphabetically hanging in his spare room. Full of passion for the club and you can see by the way he trains he is a winner.
All spoke about the game plan and it was up to them to carry out what they did in training to game day. Everyone seemed to get on with each other and spoke of Bucks positively (didn’t seem to be guarded in their responses) so don’t think that they are a group that are fighting with each other.
They were great with signings and photos, although it was funny, no selfies with Cox, most photos were taken by someone else. He is so tall!
Anyway, hope you are well and am happy for you to repeat on BF"
