seriously doubt we'd have the room in the salary cap to accomodate him. and if we're making a play for ben reid as well, i'd forget it. we won't be after him, but i wouldn't complain if we were. genuine superstar that can play at both ends of the field.

I think one thing has probably been forgotten in all our posts, and that is Goddard has so far been starved of a Premiership. If he effectively has only 4 or 5 years remaining in his career, I'm sure one thing he will be looking for is a club with a genuine premiership window during that time (that cuts out about 12 of the other clubs). I dont think GWS fits that description, I think we definately do, so puts us in with a good chance if we really wanted to go after him.

This sounds like wishful thinking to me! 'Goddard will stay a Saint' from afl.com.au http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/128220/default.aspx

However, if this takes place, I think doubtful Goddard will leave "St Kilda has revealed Riewoldt may not captain the Saints in 2012 and the talented Goddard will come into calculations for the position."

If Riewoldt was right, I have no doubt Goddard would have already extended his contract, so really Riewoldt is just wishful thinking. He's (Goddard) not holding our for the sake of it, and as the media are still suggesting that GWS are the team with the best chance of gaining his services (after St Kilda) I still dont believe that to be true. Players play for two things only, the money, and the chance to play in a premiership side (not necessarily in that order). Unless he believes GWS have a chance of winning a premiership within his own playing window (probably next 4 - 5 years max.) I doubt very much he would choose them.

The article quotes Riewoldt as having faith in Goddard staying at the club, but then out of nowhere drops in the captaincy speculation

This is what Riewoldt said on the captaincy as of yesterday.

Riewoldt, however, was presented to the media on Wednesday ahead of an open training session at Seaford, and said he wanted to continue in the (captaincy) role he has held, either jointly or singularly, since 2005.

biggest mistake the Saint made was moving to Seaford. its a shithole and too far from Melbourne, quicker to fly from Melb to Syd than drive Melb to Seaford at training times, not many Stkilda players are happy with it, if any.

No.

At his best he's a star, but would we get that or the guy who couldn't cope with the expectations last year and finished 9th in St Kilda's B&F (after playing all 23 games).

Hello Swans board

Was checking out how Tommy was getting along up there, and saw this thread. Hope you don't mind the intrusion.

Goddard actually carried a hip injury for much of the season, had a pretty decent operation that literally kept him off his feet and only returned to full training a few weeks ago.

I really hope he stays, he has cried a lot of tears for the club, so you'd hope the club has at least opened discussions.

Now no more discussions about pinching more of our players. ;)

I live near Seaford and it's far from a shit hole. It's not that far to Seaford from near the city with East Link and it is their job so they'll go where they're told like the rest of us.

He is a great player who would be in demand at every club and would demand a huge wage to move clubs with the possible exception of a team with a great chance of a premiership.

I read in an article that StKilda believe Goddard only qualifies for restricted free agency and if this is the case and he doesnt go to GWS he wont go anywhere.

For the record i cant see him leaving and expect him to retire a one club player.

I would put my money on that being the case.

yeah bit harsh (I may or may not have been looking for a bite from a saints lurker) I dont mind the beach there, but just too far away from where most of the players were/are based i.e inner suburbs. It wouldnt feel like home to the players. Just to hit the East link from Melbourne can take an hour at times. Probably a nice area to live if you worked out that way.

i think for him he would be really looking for premiership window within a team + whoever can offer the $$$..
reality is Saints are on their way down and need ot re-build, their window has closed for the next 3-4 i would say.
those of the other teams in that window most likely wont have room in their cap to fit him in.
GWS might have the dollars but way too long for their window and GC's $$$ room will be quickly closing...
That does leave us a chance depending on how we perform this year i reckon. As out window will be there for us over the next 3-5 years i reckon.
of the upcoming teams the big question will be who ahs the room in their cap. from my understanding is we now have the room with Bradders, Bolton, Kennelly etc all finalised last year...

Should we go after him, most definitely.
