One of several smart things he did yesterday. There was another passage where the ball hit the deck after a ball up, one of our little blokes picked it up, and Blitz with two steps opened up a mile of space by cutting the run at the ball carrier of two or three Hawthorn players.

Only problem was our bloke was so surprised to suddenly find he had such a clear path he fell over lol.

Must have been catching, he fell over himself a couple of times when it mattered.
Obviously we're going to need him as a back-up ruck in the 1sts for a while until the walking wounded recover, but it's important for the longer term that we get him back into the 2nds asap so the boys can learn him some football.

Bloody hell missed that.
I thought he was pretty good at winning the tap, if not directing it! There's a fair bit of promise and versatility on offer from having someone so tall, athletic and aerobically capable in the 22.
I mean, with his lack of footy experience, he is practically an embryo!

Its not just Blitz that has to adjust to the game, its the other guys out there having the faith in his ability to use him as an option.
Its one thing to run all day and get a kick in training, but in the kitchen that was yesterday's cooker he ran his arse off to no avail to see the ball go the other way to another Cats option. Not saying it was deliberate but its important that his running to provide an option and take a player with him is honored. And in time it will be im sure....

Everyone is learning, not just Blitz....and after 6 games.... wow....

Go Catters

Did notice Chappy could've switched play out of defence at one stage when Blitz was 30 yards clear, just didn't seem to have the faith to do it. Ended up going long to a 50-50.

Fast forward 10-20 games and we could see that pass result in a 150 yard transition as he leaves his direct opponent in his wake while linking a chain of handballs down the wing.

Still early days but the upside could be huge.

I think his footy smarts are pretty good, even moreso when you think he has basically no experience in the game at all. Obviously he still has a lot to learn, but for a young ruckman of any experience level he's shown he has some concept of where he needs to be and what he needs to do when he gets there.

For him what I see as being the main thing is just learning how to work with a bigger frame and how to use it to his advantage on the field. He's put on nearly 20 kgs in less than 18 months, that would take a bit of getting used to.

I think once he learns how to impose himself on a game a bit more, coupled with learning some of the finer points of ruck work, he's going to become a more than handy player.

Yes, he looks like a quick learner, and he really could be anything. I think he will learn more and more quickly by playing in the 2nds where they are freer to concentrate on developing individual skills and abilities.

It's his hunger for the contest that l like best. Teammates would love having him out there, completely unselfish player.

Improving every week.

Senior list next year for him.

But do you think he and DS are our best set up coming into September?
I'd like to see DS enhance his fitness, but I'm more than happy with that combo if they maintain fitness.

Was very good all night and culminated in him being HUGE in the last quarter as our only ruck.
We were being smashed in the clearances, particularly from the center but at the end of the game we had squared it up, no doubt a lot of that was Blitz work in the ruck.
Where can this guy end up!? His ceiling is so high I don't think we can see it.

Hamish is still first choice, but since I suspect he may never appear, Daws and Blitz is the best otherwise.

Blitz is definitely best 22 now.

Whether it's just the two of them depends on Daws fitness-if he struggles to run out games I'd like an extra ruck option, which means playing West or Vardy as well, but either way Blitz stays in.

Amazing for him to do what he's done this year.

The story of the 2013 AFL season, imo.

Was at the game and some of his work in the first qtr especially was EXCEPTIONAL. Throughout the game burning people off with long leads..... next person i see calling for him to have a spell wowowwwwwwweeeeeeee lookout!

How brilliant is Scott in recognizing the talent as early as he did???:cool:he was right!
What we have is a 6'6" in and under clearance player who can play tall forward or back with the leaping talent of Niknat.
And courage in bucket loads, that spoil he put on in defence against the flight reminded me of Lonergan.

He's in process of course, learning the smarts of course and still building the ideal body,.... but what a find he is!!;)

We were smashed all night in centre clearances, but smashed them all night in other clearances.
They still beat us out of the centre in the last 1/4, but Blicavs definitely stemmed the bleeding to some extent, by stopping their ruck from getting as many free hits as they had earlier.

I don't see H Mac or Dawson as holding the 2 spot in the ruck, not enough other skils. I see those two fighting out the no 1 ruck spot.

Blitz, West & Vardy fight for the no 2 spot, with Blitz well ahead IMO

Agree.
HMac unlikely to prove his worth this season.
DS #1.
Blics #2
Or, West #2, Blics in as a utility.
Blics has to be best 22.
Just whether we can carry both DS & West.
Our last 2 wins have looked very impressive, and prior to that , our best wins have been v Swans, Ess, Rich. The common denominator in ALL those wins is BLICAVS.
And I'm a Simpson fan; problem solved imo. Just need big DS to enhance fitness, which requires ongoing game time. He should be given the same latitude that Blake and West have had, should his body hold up, ie consecutive hard work games.

Yes its been an amazing effort. I remember at the start of the season with our rucks stocks decimated, I thought if he could hold down his position and make a contest for the first 3-4 weeks he would have done well. Just keeps on producing when i'd thought he'd fade away.
