Lads, we finally have a coach with some balls.

Time to turn these kids with potential into professional athletes .

Well Done MFC, you have put together a mighty fine coaching group.

Davey was always a sprinter - not a stayer.

But now that he's lost his pace, he's going to need to get himself to a new level of fitness - as seen last year.

Good work putting the acid on Sylvia too - he should be aiming to be as fit as guys like Dayne Swan :thumbsu:

I like that he is being tough on people, but I honestly have seen no evidence that Davey responds to having the heat on him. After shirking that mark earlier this year, he went into his shell even more except for one interview in The Age. Seemed lost on field and overly concious of his performance. I still see a future for Flash - it was not long ago that he was funded off our rookie list by members, and at the end of the day if he gets it right he is a beautiful kick and he cannot have lost all his pace.. He is also our highest paid player besides Clark, so I hope Neeld has not taken the wrong approach here...

That being said, I am very very impressed by this bloke and I can only hope that the likes of Sylvia, Morton, Dunn etc. who have been inconsistent when they obviously have some talent are really taken to task and we reap the benefits

article in the sun about neeld just makes me even more excited by this man.. he is guna demand everything from this group, but he's also turning the whole club on its head..

dam I'm getting a major man crush on this bloke, just hope it's not all talk

I seen that article. I'm just not sure it's the right way to go about it to be bagging Jack Watts as soon as he is in the place.

Watts has copped it from everyone including Melbourne fans in his first 3 years and now he is copping criticism from the new coach already. Jack is going to end up with a bloody complex over everybody questioning him as a footy player.

For what it's worth I thought Watts was one of your players who consistently put in 100% effort this year and I think Neeld could have chosen a better target instead of taking the popular and easy target in Watts like everybody else has in the past.:thumbsd:

Didn't seem like Neeld was bagging Watts at all, but I thought the sub-editor chose the title horrendously. Nowhere was he calling for Watts to 'lift his game', he was merely saying to work extra hard in training so you can reach the heights that are clearly possible.

The article about Watts reads quite negatively, I thought his 2nd half of the season was very impressive. There's plenty of other players that Neeld should be putting in the spotlight before Jack. Unfair imo

Well poor little Aaron better get used to it because he is our highest paid
player and is expected to really be setting an example.

Davey = Brilliant off field but really soft and out of form onfield.
Sylvia = Brilliant on field but really stupid and irresponsible off field.

WhelanLegend i agree with your sentiments

Richskee it isnt a negative article, all Neeld has said yes your the face of an add campaign, yes your pretty much the only dees player who was on the footy show this year BUT your first priority is on field to this footy club and to become the best player you possibly can. Yes Wattsy had a good year but i think he is just reminding him that its the tip of the iceberg and he has plenty of hard work to go to become the footballer he can be.

Also loving this

Another in the gun is the talented Cale Morton, who was taken at No.4 in the 2007 draft, but is yet to fulfil his potential.
"It was a similar message to Jack. Get to know the conditioning staff and the strength staff really well. You've got four months to put yourself in the picture to play senior footy," Neeld said.
"Good luck, have a go at it, see how you go.
"I have had a chat with Cale and asked him where he thought he could play . . . and I think he told me any position except for the ruck, so that's a positive."

Neeld has also given Aaron Davey a list of positional options. If he can't fit into the slot required and follow team rules, the electrifying veteran won't play seniors.
"All players need to know if you drop off a work ethic or a certain aspect of your game, you need to know how that looks and that looks like playing VFL footy," Neeld said.
Colin Sylvia, rubbed out for Round 1 next year, must complete a responsible drinking course before being available to return.

The underlined bit was the most important for me, because that certainly wasnt the case under Bailey, too many players just floated along at 70-80% during games and werent pulled up on it.

The Watts article was painted in a really negative light by the journo/editor unfortunately.

It came off a little harsh considering the improvement in Watts' intensity and efforts, but it seems Neeld wants success.

No one should be exempt from having to lift their standards and I'm sure he's given that message to all of our players.

Watt's intensity this year was still a long way off the likes of an A grade player, he still doesn't appear to put his whole body and energy into marking attempts and leads at the ball. Granted, he improved a lot from his first 2 years where he barely broke out of a canter.

I like Neeld's attitude with Watts. Don't forget how much pressure he is under to deliver as a #1 draft pick, and being taken ahead of players like Naitanui, Rich and Sidebottom. Yes, the article is painted negatively but Neeld is exactly right - you've played 40 games and you are the face of a TV campaign but you aren't elite yet - time to deliver.

The one thing he failed to address though is what he will do with him on the field. If he plays him behind the ball I am going to go crazy. :thumbsd:

I couldn't be happier and more impressed than I am at the moment with Neeld. Not because of what he is doing it and the way he goes about it per se (which, btw, is teh awsm and not a little bit refreshing), but because it's exactly what this club needs at this time.

Massive tick.

I'd wager that it is some form of walking clock.

But yeah, sounds like he is a doer.

If we win a flag and it's blokes like Watts, Morton, Davey, Sylvia and Green who are the main contributors, Neeld will be crowned as a hero of the MFC.

Loving this regime. Every great hierarchy has a great leader.

Get off the bongs.

I think it's fantastic that he's using the media to put the blowtorch on the players. I don't think he is being too harsh at all. Going public with this stuff is one among many things he might do to help in setting new standards and changing the mindset of the playing group.

I don't think Neeld is the first to do this sort of thing and he won't be the last. Many coaches have publicly challenged their players in the past as a means to get the best out of them. I've been reading about Ron Barassi lately and as coach of Carlton, he regularly potted particular players in his newspaper columns and tv interviews as a way of getting them to perform to their best. He'd only do it to players who he thought would respond to such a public potting. Oftentimes it worked, but sometimes it didn't if he misjudged the mood. Barass went way beyond what Neeld is currently doing.

This is right.
