Coach Mark Neeld leaves Essendon as Game Performance Coach

It may well be that Worsfold made the call? maybe he hasn't had enough power to change things until now?

We are all firing arrows in the wind.
I doubt Worsfold has any say over these things. From an org chart point of view it's more likely to have come from Dan Richardson as GM of Football.

Mark Neeld is a ****ing dildo. I hope Goddard was around when he was given the arse, if anyone deserved a good FINGER POINTING it was that idiot!

Hopefully Mark didn't leave the "resignation" too late for you blokes to make finals.

Good luck for the rest of the year!

Maybe he needs to. Football people need to run footy stuff. I bet Clarkson has a big say in things

Sheedy had a massive say in all things when he was first appointed coach. The way it should be

Can someone remind me of what Luke Balls role is?

Serious question....have heard nothing from or about him since it was announced.

Wonder if Neeld leaving will see him officially join footy department? If memory serves his role sits outside and reports to HR...many suggested at the time that this was a loophole to navigate the cap on footy department spend. Problem solved with Neeld gone maybe.
Was a wellbeing role I think? I'd completely forgotten until you mentioned it..

Essendon Football Club is pleased to announce Luke Ball has been appointed to the role of Manager, People Performance, at the Bombers.

“Luke will be responsible for building and developing the leadership capability across our playing group as well as coach development, maximising the relationship between coaches and the playing group, and building the alignment between the players shared vision and the broader club values,” Lawry said.

Doing a great job developing leadership atm...

The classic diversionary tactic to keep the masses at bay for a little while longer. Pin the problems on a guy that can easily be classed as a villain. No connection to Essendon, no history, easy target.

Even if he was a big part of the problem the bigger problem would be the people doing the hiring and the people listening to anything he says.

Official basket case.

Specialist communicator advising on communications between coaches and players and coaches.

He's currently working on Allan Turing's machine trying to decipher what is meant by the players 'standing for something' and how that could possibly apply to playing football matches.

Once he's figured it out he'll tell the players who then provide him with a response which he decodes for the coaches.

It's industry best practice and he's reduced the time for message transmission to 6 weeks.

Actually clearer than the initial press release.

Not sure who is blaming one person for it. So far I've seen people point fingers at no less than:

The Board
The CEO
Sean Wellman
John Worsfold
Mark Neeld
All three line coaches
The club's media department
Dyson Heppell
Brendon Goddard
The leadership group
Daniher
Walla
The zombie forward line
Mark Baguley
Dyle Longfark
and the actual entire playing group...

not to mention a few odd comments that blamed the supporter base generally and the bigfooty population specifically. :drunk:

Haha yes didn't mean to word it like that. As I said it's one of many steps in the right direction. Anyway I'll be on my way.

This article is pretty damning. If true there's no wonder we sacked him, shouldn't have been allowed anywhere near the strategy/game plan side of things. No wonder the players have looked like they didn't have a clue. Now to appoint Caracella as senior assistant to take over in 2 years (all the while implementing the game plan himself while communicating effectively to everyone).

ESSENDON has sacked Mark Neeld, despite the club saying he had tendered his resignation on Monday.

Foxfooty.com.au
understands the dynamics among the coaching panel had become unsustainable this year, which filtered down to the players.

Although it is too harsh to say Neeld, who was sacked as senior coach of Melbourne after two years in 2013, had lost the playing group, there is no doubt there were elements of frustration from players towards the coaching structure and roles.

It’s believed that aside from John Worsfold, Rob Harding (game intelligence and opposition strategy coach) and Neeld, no assistants were permitted to discuss specific strategy and tactics with the senior coach or players.

This extended to game day in the coaches’ box, with almost every suggestion regarding a heavily criticised game plan funnelled through Neeld.

This alienated other assistants Mark Harvey, James Kelly, Paul Corrigan and Hayden Skipworth.

On several occasions, at least one of the assistants who was not allowed to discuss strategy or tactics, had to discreetly tell the runner messages behind Worsfold and Neeld’s backs in order to get their message out there.

Ultimately, the structure didn’t work and Neeld was moved on — the scapegoat in a system that had broken down.

The Bombers do not have plans to fill the now-departed Neeld’s role.

Foxfooty.com.au understands the playing group had become aware of coaching group disharmony since the beginning of the 2018 season.

Dan Richardson played a large role in the decision, just as he did at Richmond when the Tigers did not renew several assistant coach contracts at the end of 2016.

In that clean-out, Richardson oversaw the axing of Port Adelaide premiership coach Mark Williams, backline coach Ross Smith and forwards coach Greg Mellor.

The decision to move on game performance coach Neeld is seen as a circuit-breaker at Essendon, although it remains to be seen whether his departure will pay dividends on the field.

The club is expected to re-shuffle it’s coaching structure at the end of the season, with Neeld the first domino to fall after his position was made redundant on Monday.

In a statement, Neeld said he felt the time was right to move on after holding discussions with the club, which included a potential restructuring of the coaching group.

“I feel this decision is in the best interests of the club, and for myself and my family.

Before joining Essendon, Neeld coached Melbourne for just 33 games before he was sacked halfway through the 2013 season. He also spent a season as the Eastern Ranges’ talent manager in the TAC Cup.

Essendon football manager Dan Richardson said Neeld had been “an extremely professional and hardworking member” of the club’s coaching panel.

“He has made this decision in the best interests of the club,” Richardson said.

“This was a decision Mark has been reflecting on for some weeks, and following discussions regarding the potential restructure of the coaching department, Mark felt it was the right time to step aside and explore a new chapter in his career.”

Can't really blame a bloke for the job description he wears. Being part of the team doesn't mean you can dictate how the team operates. Whoever designed it that way is clearly a peanut.

On the other hand, if everything is funnelled through him then he does bear significant responsibility for what actually happened on field.

In fairness, article just posted suggests Neeld maybe a bigger issue than initially thought.

Glad to know we're so well run.

That is shocking.

Worsfold should be sacked, you'd think he would have been the one to implement that structure.

Seems very authoritarian and old school...like 'I'm the boss you do what I say'.

Add this to Cooney saying he doesn't invest and speak to the players enough, and someone here saying he doesn't seem to include and shake the hands of all the assistants after a win like a lot of coaches do, and it paints a pretty clear picture of worsfold.

No wonder the players aren't playing with spirit, instead of an inclusive culture worsfold is exclusive.

Wow.

Glad to know we're so well run.
I can kind of understand that they want to simplify the communication to stop mixed messages. I'm not sure how they came to this particular solution though... seems to just cause more mixed messages. How long have we had this ridiculous structure in place? Bomber was Hird's 2ic, I don't think there were these funny middle men back then. After that they had some sort of review from the saga and combined the two GM Football roles into one.

We're still in a situation where the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing though.
