I'd certainly much rather us play like Geelong than Sydney. We are a lot better to watch now than a year or two ago when we were playing that awful lock down, overly defensive Sydney style.

Probably a bit rich to attribute the change just to Leigh Tudor's arrival this season though. After all, our style of play started to change halfway through last season when we became more attacking. However, it certainly wouldn't hurt to have someone like Tudor on board now, who is up to speed with Geelong's game plan.

While I have no doubt that he meant it as a compliment, I just hate it when coaches effectively say "they play like us" because we don't, we're playing as well but that's where the similarities end.

I agree - just because we're winning doesn't necessarily mean we're playing like Geelong.

Someone said the other day that St Kilda look like Geelong when we have the ball and like Hawthorn when we don't have the ball. I'm convinced that Geelong and Hawthorn will have been the benchmark for Lyon and his team while developing a strategy for the Saints 2009 season (I would think that they also looked at Collingwood's tackling pressure that allowed them to smash Geelong last year).

But Lyon probably knows better than anybody that you can't just copy another team (he tried to make a Sydney out of us in his first year and clearly failed - though there are certainly elements of the 2005 / 2006 Sydney pressure and control that one can see in St Kilda 2009).

The coaching staff are paid to get the best out of their players - using whatever tactics they can think of or copy (from other AFL teams or other codes - soccer teams started using a "zone" tactic decades ago) to the xtent that it works for their players. Success is what matters - St Kilda is successful as is Geelong (who, of course, have been successful for an incredible period of time now). But they certainly don't play like each other.

I dont have any issue with MT's comments but I really dont like this... I dont want to hear the Saints are winning because were playing like the cats have. Were completly the opposite of the Cats. We base our results around tackling and contested football. The Cats success has been failry recognised as a result of their hard attacking running game style. So were not the same at all. Were the best defensive team in the comp. Their still the best attacking side in the comp. Us playing so well has absolutley nothing to do with the Cats and everything to do with RL and his style of play. And if you think us winning does have anything to do with the cats than that IS just arrogance.

Thompson has always been prone to smugness, even before Geelong won the flag, the 2004 fiasco was just one example. Even when they were winning everything last season, he was continually coming out in the media saying they were capable of becoming so much better, well that ended in tears.
I much prefer Ross Lyon's understated manner. No conceit or false modesty, just a level headed, one week at a time, matter of fact approach. He knows we have the job ahead of us and much to prove.

Why do we have to scrutinise every little detail? If he reckons Tudor's made a big difference, then that's his opinion. There is a certain element of truth to him being arrogant. But he's earned the right to be. My best mate's a Geelong supporter so i guess i have a bit of a soft spot for them.

Harley missed the first 6 weeks and will only improve from here (I still think the game changed when he got knocked out 3rd qtr in the GF) ... Ling has just returned from an achilles ..... Ottens will have missed half a season by the time he returns.

Or that Roo and Schneider both essentially did not have a pre-season and are only now getting match fit.

Mate, i'm pretty certain geelong and Bomber circa 2007 wore a hole in the "one week at a time" thing. have you ever hear of the 'lid'?

And to say that it's arrogant for Bomber to say we have improvement left in us is a joke. As the head coach of the Geelong Cats, do you honestly expect him to come out and say anything else? i'd be worried if he didn't.

I personally think that Bomber and Lyon are very similar and are BOTH understated. You rarely hear bomber saying something Terry wallace or Mick Malthousesk.

And my final point. After having working with Tudor for so long on a professional level, can assure you that bomber had and still has nothing but love for Leigh. To think he was having a 'snipe' is rediculous.

Just some thoughts guys. I love Bomber, he's been through some tough times, i think he deserves a little more credit then he is given sometimes. As a coach and as a person.

a few things get me from this thread.. 1 is that more saints fans seem to have a problem with MY problem with Thompson than geelong supporters.. at least it shows the geelong supporters aren't as conceited as thompson... lol

secondly.. as a random statement but related to the topic.. I'd rather be a Harvey than a Carey or for that matter, a Buckley.. read it how you want..

Must admit that crap about the match committee was the biggest load I've heard from Thompson yet.
I just think he's trying some antagonism to ruffle feathers.
You guys are on top we're second, so far 09, you're the most successful club. I hope its a great game and we play off come September. When you win so much during the season it'd be injustice if we both fall short at the end.
