It was nice finally seeing him run around in the 1s. The commentators were a bit enamoured with his as well. If he can fill a spot on half forward and Schultz continues on we're a pretty dangerous forward half.

Sturt looks like a legit gun and fills a need perfectly for our forward line.
Crowden looked pretty good. Ryan and Lobb killed it

I'd be putting sizeable money on us for the spoon if that was our go to strategy in 2020.
I’m not suggesting it as our go to strategy, but I’d be putting that money on us for the spoon if our go to strategy is Lobb as a lead up forward. Doesn’t seem to be what works for him, and right now, Lobb is our best KPF prospect.

If you have a player with a contested marking superpower you play to his strengths, and that’s high ball in fast. If you have a player lwho can blitz the ground ball, you feed his strengths. And if you have a guy who can get out on a lead and players who can deliver to him, then do that.

Currently we have all of that. If they are sitting a marking beast in front of Lobb, target Taberner and McCarthy on leads, or get Walters and Sturt involved. With Lobb entertaining two of the best defenders, we have an advantage.

Lobb's contested marks were mostly defensive though - not for us to move the ball.

I don't know about others but I was pretty excited when Crowden hit Dixon on the tit leading up at him from FF, when Lobb hit Schultz i50 in the corridor, when Tabs hit McCarthy on the lead after Cam had run from the middle of the ground (having been part of the possession chain) and led back to the ball i50, and so on with all 17 of our marks inside 50. I much preferred watching that to the bomb it to the goal square and hope some tall bastard can clunk it out of the pack.
100% I’ve been screaming for this for so long.

If our current first choice forwards are fit and available then Lobb is sitting one on one, as is Taberner and Hogan. Happy for them to be receiving the ball long and fast. That is a win for us.
I’m not sure it is tbh. The good back lines would much prefer to defend this, regardless who the forwards are.

Not one of the goals on the weekend came from a long bomb and high despite us playing our big contested markers in Taberner and Lobb in our forward line. I suspect if you checked the footage closely you'd find when we did those long bombs it often ended in turnovers (from things like Tabs giving away frees). Here are how the goals were kicked on the weekend...

Q1
Goal 1 - McCarthy on the lead, from Tabs who marked the ball on a lead
Goal 2 - Shultz on the lead, from Lobb who intercepted
Goal 3 - Shultz intercepts runs inside 50 and goals (should have passed to Sturt)
Q2
Goal 4 - Aish in space, from short pass from Shultz who won free kick (Q2 16:32)
Goal 5 - Sturt, from free kick (gut punch)
Goal 6 - Shultz on the lead, from Blakely who received handball from Brayshaw who intercepted (Q2 5:12)
Q3
Goal 7 - Cerra in space, from short pass from Colyer on the lead, from Acres
Goal 8 - Dixon on the lead, from Crowden
Q4
Goal 9 - Banfield on lead, from Acres (50m penalty brought him within goal range)
Goal 10 - Banfield from free kick (held at stoppage)
Goal 11 - Lobb on the lead, from Banfield (50m penalty brought him within goal range)
Goal 12 - Shultz on the lead, from Banfield on the lead, from Sturt on the lead, from Colyer on the lead, from Hughes who got the ball from Ryan
Goal 13 - Colyer fast break back to goal, from Matera on the lead, from Banfield who got the ball from Hughes

I honestly don't know what game you are watching? Hitting forwards on the lead is a really effective way to score - most of us have been crying out for it for years. All our players need to be able to be hit on the lead (and not just inside 50) - Lobb did it plenty on Saturday - he had 13 marks, 5 were contested and all were intercepts I think (he had 7 intercepts).

I’m not suggesting we don’t/shouldn’t hit a forward on a lead....

Lobb is our #1 tall forward and he doesn’t feature in your list. He is far and away the best marking target we have and a dominant contested marking player. When he does play forward that advantage should be exploited. If Colyer is one out in the forward line matched up on a slower player, that needs to be exploited too, exactly as happened in goal 13, which incidentally was a long bomb into the forward line.

Look again....Lobb is in that list

No it was a long kick to the advantage of a player leading back toward goal. That's nothing like a long bomb to a contest.
Whenever you are one on one in the forward line and mobile then you are on a lead? Spare me. But I’m also not suggesting that Lobb one out in a forward line should be standing like a brick. The ball should be kicked to his advantage, which is high marking.

lol. I swear I could say 1 + 1 = 2 and you'd double down to dispute it :) You are being nonsensical in relation to the original debate now.

I understand we need to temper our expectations as it's only a preseason game but I would rather be winning than losing.

Preseason is a good indicator of form going into round one. Yes of course there are outliers (West Coast in 2018) but overall it's a good indication of form. If you look at last year, the teams that didn't win a preseason match:
  • Melbourne (went from premiership favourites to second-bottom halfway through the season)
  • Kangaroos (80 point loss to us and lost their first 3-4 matches)
  • Essendon (smashed by GWS and lost their first 3-4 matches)
  • Bulldogs (beat Sydney in Round 1, mixed start to the season)
  • Fremantle (smashed Kangaroos however lost to Gold Coast in round 2)

Many on here would say that Tabs is our #1 tall forward and best marking target and a dominant contested marking player, but every time we went long to him 1 v 1 he either gave away the free or got beaten by Weitering and even Jones in some cases. All ended up in a turnover in any case.

I guess the absence of the great training drill of kicking long to a tall contest that neither player tries to mark but instead knocks it down in front is hurting us 🤣

Weitering is a decent defender and Taberner was somewhere between poor and very poor. He is a good marking target, but I rate Lobb's contested marking higher. I note you say "many" but don't say what your opinion is; do you think Tabs is our #1 tall forward and best marking target and a dominant contested marking player? I thought most rate Hogan as our best tall forward and Lobb as our best contested marking target.

I also think Taberner plays better when he has a more mobile role than he seemed to have in that game where often he was more the close to goal square target. Splitting their defence by having Lobb there should help a lot. Longmuir is going to take some time to find his ideal combination and positions for players, especially with starting the season short of first choice KPPs.

I don't see Taberner and Lobb as an ideal combination (from our list my ideal would be either of them plus Hogan and McCarthy, both of whom should be leading forwards), but if Taberner and Lobb aren't marking targets why would you have them in the forward line? They aren't awesome kicks and they lack the speed off the mark, or even the high end forward footy smarts of players like Walters or Hogan. It is another reason I prefer them as marking targets; it keeps it simple.

What they are great at is drawing the contest to them because of their marking ability, and if they don't mark it, creating an opportunity for smaller players to impact; Walters, Matera and co are perfect partners in crime for them

If Taberner and/or Lobb draw the defence to them then it opens up space for leading forwards to exploit; that is ideal for the likes of McCarthy and Sturt.

One of the most memorable images from the game was Lobb marking in a pack against two Carlton players, and it is something he does regularly. Even if he doesn't clunk it, it is a win for us because his marking prowess demands double teaming whenever possible. If the opposition is worried about Lobb then there is a player that has a bit more freedom than he should have.

On Second viewing and I liked Dumans game. He locks down his opponent pretty well for a tallish type and his marking and kicking out of defence was good. I reckon he will be a long term backman in this group, maybe grow into a Shane Parker role.
My thoughts exactly.
He was underestimated for his contribution after the bye last season.
Just as Parker was by many.
