Has anyone heard when and if Marty Clarke is coming back ?

He would be the perfect replacement for Toovey the dud .

Marty at least has leg speed, good decision making ,and a great kick outside 50.
Heard earlier on that we were in contract negotiations to bring him back via the International Rookie draft. Is that for this year or next ?

Haven't heard anything lately but would assume we will have to wait until seasons end to see if we are able to get him. Also, off memory I do not recall Clarke having too much leg speed, Toovey is faster anyway. Goldsack seems a better fit for Toovey imo.

Why not change the thead title to .... I hate Toovey??

And in other news .... I'd love to see Marty back. Sidey broke his 2km record by 1 second IIRC. 6mins something.

“That’s been a huge part of our team this year, the distribution of Marty Clarke. He’s playing centre forward, in the Greg Blaney mood – he has that type of vision. I don’t know many players who have that vision. There was a bit of a rumour about the county over the last few weeks that he was heading back to Collingwood, but I think he wants to prove a point that he’s not for going back. That’s still a wee bit of a worry but from what I hear, he’s no intentions of going back.”

this is off the web...... marty will NOT be coming back, I think.

In the Inner Sanctum pre match speech before the Geelong game someone asked Gavin Brown if he thought marty was coming back. Browny said he wasn't sure but he said that Hine was very confident of getting him back. He also mentioned that he'd heard marty would need a lot of conditioning work to get back to AFL fitness, his skinfolds might have blown out a bit with some home cooking.

The GAA don't pay wages. I suspect he will be back.

If he comes back he comes back, was really struggling in his last year at the club and while the kid can play the game i dont reckon we miss him as much as some think.
Either way good luck to him whatever he decides.

I love Marty but he has to know if he is back he wont be automatically in the 22 everyweek. I think that was partly the reason why he left becuase he missed his family so much and not getting a game in the seniors didnt help. If he accepts that then il be very happy because he was a good player for us and is still fairly young.

Yeah I think that was more the Reason the reason then Him being a Teacher as he could of done his course here in Melbourne

Marty would make for an excellent HFF.
If he came back that is..

Correct, I think if he comes back his best work would be up front as a forward goal sneak.

Thankfully being a forward in Gaelic he knows how to run at the ball, then turn and fire.

I would see him ideally releasing Didak into the middle, raising our class in this area.

As for replacing Toovey forget it. Can only see Goldsack really challenging for that spot in the team.

I suspect something a little different.

He had a flier during the preseason and was looking in incredibly good touch. Then I expect he let the club know about his homesickness and his intentions and the club decided to give other players a chance which is fair enough.

If reintroduced to the club I strongly believe he can break back into the side. Not straight away and will likely need a few games to get used to the intensity of AFL football again, but I think if he wants to he certainly can. Very driven and motivated guy who can do whatever he puts his mind to.

You'd think Tooves had ran over the OP's dog or something.
and by dog you mean son, and you mean repeatedly on purpose

*hoping im not the only one that idolises Lionel Hutz

Class of 2010
“Wee James has been brilliant so far,” says Paul. “He’s blooded three or four new men into the squad, James Colgan, Callum King and his brother Daniel McCartan and they have been all excellent this year, and it’s great to see it. Everyone in the county is full behind him and he’s doing very well. I think this Brian McIver [McCartan’s assistant manager and former Donegal boss] is a great asset too. He seems to be very, very shrewd, a great reader of a game.
“Marty Clarke has been a huge addition to us as well. In the first game against Kildare, he put a pass into Paul McComiskey – I would say it was 50, 60 yards – for a goal. It was an unbelievable pass that was worth the entry fee. In the game against Laois, he put a ball in over the top of the defence and if his brother [John] hadn’t caught it he’d have knocked him out. He caught it, turned and into the net. Such a pass!

Neither has progress been limited to the senior side. Far from it: the schools have also been making giant strides in recent years.
“I think Down has won six Ulster titles at school level this year, from U12s, U14s, U16s,” says Paul. “St Colman’s won the Hogan Cup, and 80 per cent of them would be Down lads. Malachy’s from Castlewellan won the All-Ireland [Vocational Schools] for two years in a row and got to the final this year where they were pipped by a very strong Clonakilty team. It all augurs well for the future of Down football with all these young fellas coming through.
“Another big thing has been that the County Board have taken some of the county’s best footballers and turned them into coaches. The have Benny Coulter and Ambrose Rogers and Marty Clarke, maybe half a dozen boys from the county team, and they’re going round the schools on a daily basis coaching. They’d be in Newry school today, Mayobridge tomorrow and maybe Hilltown the next day. So that’s been a great move.
From schools to seniors, confidence is once again coursing through the veins of Down’s footballers. Ulster, and the rest of the country, beware.

That was article from yesterday they say he is not coming back:(

They didn't say that at all, they said "I think", and "from what I hear".

Unless it comes from Marty's potato eating gob, it means absolutely nothing.

dont know why people are so keen to have him back, he had an amazing debut season from memory and tapered off after that. itd be great to have him back but he wont improve us any more than probably some of our depth players could in the vfl.

some say he has the passion and drive to succeed at whatever he wants , well he left the pies pretty much when he had the biggest chance of his career to really cement a spot and make the most of his afl career.

loved him but not required

Medders on weekend radio suggested Marty's a big chance to come back. :thumbsu:
Collingwood ha$ been in hi$ ear, and I'm $ure he will be back next $ea$on, and is definitely in Collingwood's best team. With a restricted draft over the next three seasons, his return would be an absolute bonus!

The following article appeared last week in the the Belfast Telegraph, and the Irish Independent.

Martin Clarke Set For Debut But Oz Still On Agenda
Thursday, 20 May 2010

Down star Martin Clarke has revealed he would consider a return to the AFL but, for now, remains focused on his long-awaited championship debut for the Mourne men against Donegal on Sunday week. The An Riocht man has been the centre of attention since his return from AFL side Collingwood and he has lived up to his huge billing as he played a key role in helping Down to win promotion to Division 1.

“When I left Collingwood, I had great relations there,” said Clarke. “It was a tough decision to come back, but I'm delighted I made that decision. But I suppose I couldn't sit here and say I definitely wouldn't go back at some stage.” Cont...

Well that goes against what I saw. Those he said it was a Hard Descion to coming back but still might come back. Makes no Sense

Absolutely agree. Ben Johnson at the time was having an absolute shocking season and yet Marty was still playing in the 2's. The only reason I can guess is what Knightwheelrqr said, Marty informed the club of his intentions and the club thought well if you not here for the long term you're not playing seniors.

The thing about this rumour about Marty returning is that its seems just more than word of mouth - the club has been asked directly (eg Pert in interview) so they seem optimistic. :thumbsu:

Marty wasn't playing much better in the vfl then roids in the seniors, abd his senior matches were inept. He was rightfully out of the side last year no questions

Sounds like a bloke who needs convincing with money....

Also sounds like a bloke who picks his ball up and walks back to mum when he's dropped..

funny how the 3 irish papers have the same story..... it must be because to be sure....to be sure.....to be sure...that its printed correctly...
