ADDITIONAL CUP PENALTY FOR MASTER O'REILLY
masterrvl_lrg_003.jpg

Racing Victoria’s Chief Handicapper Greg Carpenter today issued an additional 1.5kg penalty to Master O’Reilly for the Emirates Melbourne Cup, after his win in the dramatic BMW Caulfield Cup on Saturday.

The penalty matches the 1.5kg penalty already announced following the Danny O’Brien trained five-year-old’s win in the Group 2 Winning Edge Presentation Stakes at Caulfield the previous Saturday.

The two penalties take Master O’Reilly’s weight to 53.0kg in the Melbourne Cup.

In issuing the penalty Carpenter said, “Master O’Reilly’s emergence as a stayer of the highest quality in the last ten days has been quite spectacular.”

“While a penalty of 3.0kg is historically at the higher end of the scale, in his current rich vein of form Master O’Reilly remains well placed to become the 12th horse to complete the Caulfield Cup- Melbourne Cup double in the same year.”

Master O’Reilly is now exempt from the ballot for the Melbourne Cup. The latest elimination order for the race is now available.

Previous Caulfield Cup Penalties (Last 20 Years)

2006 2.0kg Tawqeet 19th Melbourne Cup
2005 2.0kg Railings 14th Melbourne Cup

1997 3.5kg Might and Power 1st Melbourne Cup
1996 3.0kg Arctic Scent 12th Melbourne Cup
1995 3.0kg Doriemus 1st Melbourne Cup
1994 3.0kg Paris Lane 2nd Melbourne Cup

*In 1989 Cole Diesel won the Toorak Handicap and was penalised 2.5kg for the Melbourne Cup but could not be penalized for the Caulfield Cup. After winning the Caulfield Cup he was issued with an additional 1.0kg penalty taking the Melbourne Cup penalty to 3.5kg in total.

After seeing Annenkov of all things skip 3 lengths clear turning one can only imagine how easy big Maldi would have been travelling sitting outside him waiting to ping.

The other thing with the 2 scratchings is that with both of them in the field then MO would have settled down another 2 horses back along the fence as they both would have raced in the first 5 and been on the fence.

So was Maldi sitting outside of Annenkov or was he in the first 5 and on the fence?

Thanks In Advance

Master O'Reilly looked like a Melbourne Cup winner in the Caulfield Cup. The weakness of the field he beat is my worry.

Backed MO'R last week and think he is big chance for the cup, blew them away down the straight, would have been better (and more profitable) if he had of done it against Maldevian. Have just put $20 on Miss Finland (cox) into MO'B (M.Cup) @ 20-1.

Actually I got 400/1 and I put it on the 7th of September with Double Bet but as I was opening an account, it went on officially on the 9th of Sept.

The day I put the bet on, (I think it was the Friday before he won at the last race at Flemington beating Red Lord), I spoke to Brian Taylor and he told me that the horse had been confidentially supported the week before and some punters got set at 1200/1 for Master O'Rielly/Master O'Rielly cups double.

yer was thinking along the lines the bet get halved choosing the same horse, but the double price is the double price, good on you mate your a massive chance......

Cheers mate for the good wishes...but I am trying not to think about it too much and get too far ahead of myself, as I know even though Master O'Reilly has a great chance, there are so many things that can go wrong before and during the race.

I am trying to decide as to whether I should make a book against the other main chances and at least cover my X's (about $1,000 of Cup bets) if Master O'Reilly doesn't win and one of them does, or just let him and the others in the doubles run for me and don't worry about saving or laying some of the other chances.

I also have Efficient running for $11,000, Sirmone-$2,000 and Tacit Agreement-$4,000, so I don't have worry about them and I also backed Douro Valley to win $2,000.

At this stage I am thinking about saving on the imports Purple Rose and Mahler although I have missed the good odds on those two, Miss Finland, Maybe Better, Zipping and possibly Miss Coup and On a Juene. I think I will risk the rest.

Iv'e looked at the replay of the CC a few times and i tell you all this,

Master O will kill anything that raced in the CC on Melbourne Cup day. Purple Moon who i'm mainly referring to did nothing!! So what if he was held up, even when he got clear, he just plugged away. It's exactly the same sort of garbage run Maybe Better dished out in the Caulfield Stakes passing tired horses late and then every mug under the sun came jumping on board hoping he was returning to last years form.

Purple Moon WILL NOT!! get without 25 lengths of Master O. In fact Purple Moon WILL NOT run in the first 6!! Take that!! :)

I'm with you there. Purple Moon was held up and ran on OK but he was a fair way from the winner. IMHO, Master O'Reilley will be better over 2 miles, so I agree he has the Caulfield Cup field covered.

I reckon the dangers are the Irish horses but I'm happy to be backing MOR.

has anyone thrown up Tuesday Joy if she can get to the cup with Beadman on board!!! I like

Hussler for the Caulfield Cup maybe even the cox 2 weeks after that

Sorry if I missed it but does anyone know what has happened to this horse after its disappointing Melbourne Cup run?

was meant to run on anzac day at flemington, but obrien opted not too, as it got a massive weight!! i do remember he is going to run in some race, maybe this week, that has a set top weight!!

he will have just the one run, then be spelled again and then prepared for the cups again!! similar to what efficent did last year

He is runnnig in adelaide in a mile race. Same race hayes uses as an autumn race for his imports. In next week or 2.
BTW dont get ya hopes up on master being like he was last spring.... has bad leg problems and will need to be looked after by danny which im sure he will be but donr be surprised if he doesnt come up for the spring.

I know one of Danny's owners and the word is that he has a massive, massive opinion of Gallopin and is going to set him for both Cups and he thinks he will be better than Master O'R.

The form out of the 2007 CC is a little suspect...

Apart from Purple Moon who ran 2nd in the Melb Cup, Princess Coup who had a luckless autumn, Sirmione who dominated at Flem, Sarrera winning the QE and Eskimo Queen winning the Coolmore, the rest of the field is pretty suspect (Maldivian the one exception). MO is over rated. ;)

1 TAWQEET (USA) - Retired
2 BLUE MONDAY (GB) - Jumps career
3 BLUTIGEROO - Finished
4 RAILINGS - Finished 2 years.
5 MAYBE BETTER - Injury?
6 BLACK TOM - Not group 1 class
7 PURPLE MOON (IRE) - 2nd Melb Cup
8 MALDIVIAN (NZ) - Went amiss in the Autumn
9 CINQUE CENTO - No
10 MANDELA (NZ) - Not Group 1 class
11 SCENIC SHOT - Looked ok winning last week. Beat nothing special.
12 ANNENKOV (IRE) - Just retire it.
13 ANAMATO - Retired
14 DOURO VALLEY - Just a honest battler. Got showed up in the autumn.
15 SIRMIONE - Better suited at WFA and at Flem.
16 ESKIMO QUEEN (NZ) - Won group 1 Coolmore (Mares), failed in Doncaster.
17 PRINCESS COUP - Luckless in the autumn
18 MASTER O'REILLY (NZ) - Smashed in the Melbourne Cup.
19E SARRERA Michael Moroney - Fluke last start?
20E MOLOTOV David Hayes - Better suited fresh and at the mile.

I'll be laying MO today and more so in the Spring staying races. :thumbsu:

Anamato retired?

Damn, one of my fave horses, didn't even know she had retired, hadn't heard a thing.

One of the owners said she was going to be retired after the spring 07. I hope they've had a change of heart and keep racing her.

I'm pretty sure that she is off to the US again.

I hope your right. After her flop in the CC the owner mentioned that she is likely to go into foal. Didn't mention the stud or if she would race on.

Hopefully it is the latter. :thumbsu:

She has been entered for the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in October so it looks unlikely that she has been sent to the barn.
