The Age reported on the curious story of ex-Saints recruiting boss Chris Toce, who helped spearhead the club’s excellent recent drafts which have added much-needed young talent to an otherwise stale list.

Toce was the head of recruiting for the 2021 selections of Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera, Mitch Owens and Marcus Windhager, plus promising recent pick-ups Mattaes Phillipou, Darcy Wilson and Lance Collard.

He was also the scout for South Australia and West Australia when the Saints plucked Callum Wilkie out of the SANFL.

But despite this success Toce was sacked in December, replaced by former Sydney recruiter Simon Dalprymple - who has had a friendly relationship with Stephen Silvagni for many years.

The move came after former list manager James Gallagher was dumped when Lyon returned as coach, with Silvagni taking his job.

It speaks to the power Lyon and friends have over the club in its current incarnation.

Hawks champion Roughead, who worked under Toce at Moorabbin, “quit his list management role at St Kilda at least in part over Toce’s treatment before accepting a similar role with his former club Hawthorn”, according to the report.

Another group of part-time recruiters were dumped over email in the same period, including a former Carlton national recruiting manager.

Silvagni left the Blues in late 2019 following a fallout with club higher-ups.

Toce is now reportedly the frontrunner to be named Richmond’s next national recruiting manager, replacing new West Coast list manager Matt Clarke.
No surprise he got the flick from Aints. Silvagni and Dalrymple both Lyon puppets

Yep. Pretty clear SOS and/or Lyon disagreed on a player so they boned him. It was probably Windsor who SOS didn't want and looks like the early fav for the Rising Star - LOL
SOS comes across as a stubborn mule , was locked onto gws off cuts at the blues only marchbank was any good , 3 others s**t

SOS is a bitter and twisted individual. He has crossed swords and rubbed people up the wrong way at every place he has worked.

He doesn't have the intelligence or skills that enable him to work co-operatively with others.

Dave Matthews, McCartney and Brad Lloyd are not fans.

To be fair Silvagni does have pretty good record as a list builder, thought he got some good players at Carlton although he bring over a lot of spuds from GWS too as well they now looking like a good side.
He does seem to burn bridges though kind of sad what happened Carlton fav son & all will probably never talk to them again...

Toce is an out of shape saints reject

This is like when the best option was the reserves coach of Collingwood ( who finished last that year ) was our best option to be the senior coach of Richmond , the late Spud Frawley

Hopefully they pick someone else.

Ross will screw Saints again. He’s got too much power and thinks he’s the CEO. It won’t be a nice ending for them.

Hoping Chris Toce is the man. Did a fantastic job building that Saints list.
they havent done shite lol their list is trash

its a dark day when Richmond think an aints off cut is the man for the job

Confirmed, great news. Drafts very modern styled footballers. Fast, quick, good skills.

Really does feel like a new cheaper for the club
Looking forward to seeing how it all unfolds

Toce record is aided by getting Owen’s and Windhager as part of their academy. Milera was a good pick, but Wilson and Phillipou were no brainer sliders. The profile of player he drafts does suit how we want to play though, aerobic athletes, quick, ball use and competitive

It’s not like he’s the only one who selects the players
Just means he is the one guiding the ship and making the final calls

Overall his philosophy when at St Kilda looks positive

Can we just get SoS

Atleast the next 4-5 years would be fun in here
excited ralph wiggum GIF

I hope it wasn't just a path of least resistance appointment.... getting the bloke who was left standing during musical chairs. We've had a dozen of our coaches and staff poached last few years. Club needs to stop being nice and stingy and start poaching the top dogs of the other clubs. Yze's lowest paid coach so our soft cap should have plenty left. I wanna see the best skills coaches and medicos/ strength & conditioning landed to replace our duds.
