Matthew Bate continues to reveal the fact that the only way he can wni the ball is on a lead. When he does get he chooses the wrong option as today when Brad Green was 20 metres out and he kicked over his head. In any contested situation the ball is not retained, he can't stick tackles and is not tight on his man defensively. i hope The Gold coast have secretly contracted him. this won't be the case unfortunarley because they're not that stupid

bate is really bad under pressure, IF he can get over that we will get better, funny thing i noticed we drew against the top team :D we are getting better

Has a few areas of his game he needs to address but he offers that lead up target that we really need.

It disappoints me how much he over runs the ball though.

i think he needs to get dropped next week, might wake him up, plus casey needs a forward, we keep taking them away lol

The reason he doesn't defend well is because he is one of few who really presents well up the ground.

Bate is a flawed genius type of player. In that today he nearly won us the game in the second half by working hard and taking it on, but at the same time could be blamed for losing it.

The instance with Green wasn't good enough though, and needs to be sorted out. That said I've seen most of our forwards (Sylvia and Green for 2) do the same thing. Many of them seem to lack confidence to give it to each other.

I think you are being too harsh, he is pretty athletic and is good on the lead. It shits me how he gets caught with the ball so often though, he seems to hold onto the ball a fraction too long all of the time. He's going to be pretty handy in the forward line as Watts develops and Jurrah and Bennell start running amok.

Matty Bate's ticket has always been based on hard work - which many of us have appreciated. Going forward I'm not sure if this will be enough, he needs to add more strings to his bow.

Having said that, as long as we have players who can't kick or handball he's not an immediate concern.

If you take Bate out, you lose an important lead up target. Watts floats around the ground more than leading to the ball.

I do wish to know why he's forgotten how to kick long and accurately though.

The problem with Matthew Bate is that he's as inconsistent now as he was in his first years in 2005/6 (4/5 years ago). And he still cannot take an overhead grab if his life depended on it, has poor awareness, plus he is very one paced and has a turning circle the size of a semi-trailer.

It is a big worry and something he needs to work on and fix soon, coz if we are to have a serious crack at a premiership, we can only carry so many passengers.

Stop making excuses. He needs a gig in the VFL. His defensive pressure is terrible and his work at ground level isn't good either. He also has no vision. Drop him make him learn and bring him back when he stars for casey.

After 1 week?

He is a needed player in a dysfunctional forwardline. The guys been playing most of his career so far as one of our main targets around the F50. To me he is a classical forward flank type player and needs to be played there.

Today he took 8 marks and kicked 3 behinds. He kicks 3 goals, all of a sudden we win the game. The one main mistake he made, was not hit up Brad Green on the lead. He did the same thing against Collingwood earlier in the year, when he should have hit Petterd on the lead to give us the win. Bailey just needs to tell the guy to lower his eyes when kicking into the F50. He's down on confidence but has played some good games this year. With some confidence, and played in the right position, he will be a very good player for us.

He has flaws in his game like 90% of other players in the AFL, i agree he can be a bit cumbersome and fumble when he is over the ball. He plays at CHF as a lead up player, now if there ever was a position and/or player thats performance is ever affected by his team mates ability or most cases in ability to kick the ball to him, Bate is it.

Watch a kick behind the play and watch how hard Bate works he can put on numerous leads and our players either handball or chip sideways, its no coincendence that he played good in the second half we we decided to move the ball on quickly and kick the ball to him, infront of him and in space.

Saj, I agree with you on the whole however he has one big flaw IMO.
He is left foot centric in fact I think his right foot kicking is poor on a good day.
It will not change at his age and as such is always going to be an average half forward.
There are spots in good sides for "average half forwards"
His problem is as the team gets better ( I hope ) his spot will come under pressure from someone who can kick well with both feet.
Find it difficult to see him playing for us in a Premiership side!

Scott Lucas never kicked on his right but was way above average.

With Bate its decision making and tackling pressure. If he gets those 2 up he'll be good every week and great some. Not great some and bad others.

He is better than average half forward, as the side improves so with Bate as he will directly benefit from a side with improved skills, decision making and confidence as a side.

It is a strange anomaly in football not many left footers use their right foot but plenty of right footers use their left. Not a big flaw IMO we are seing players use their opposite side of the body less and less these days.

Professor it is not BS, are you trying to tell me Bate is a better kick than Scott Lucas!
Bate is good on the run but on any measure Lucas was a lot better. I have never ( and I mean never ) seen Bate kick goals from a standing start beyond 50 meters which Lucas did regularly. I have not seen every game Bate has played however IMO he is no where near as accurate as Lucas. That is all I was saying.
