Not an AFL player.

His only asset is his run from the backline, and even that is limited. For a big guy he is poor overhead, and nearly always gets beaten in 1 on 1 contests.

What were they thinking?

he is crap. thats where he is at. to think guys like jason porplyzia and aidan parker were dropped from the crows list is a farce when this guy is still on it.

I thought parker was ok

He seems to be doing ok at SANFL level, hasn't gotten, and is unlikely to get an AFL chance.

Shame, after that many years I'd have liked to have a look at him.

I'll get the club to send you a pic of him then Crow-mo.

Anything to keep him out of a Crows jumper. :D

He needs to get better at that...and that...and that.

I haven't seen Smith, but let's not forget most of the posters on here were saying exactly the same thing about Bock about 4 weeks ago. The club must see something in the guy.
He's still pretty young isn't he?

Spot on & i was one of those who ended up with egg on my face.

Saw Smith play for the first time last week (tv) & thought he played a pretty good game.

Mind that was only SANFL & not the AFL.

Do you think you watch enough Sturt games to make such a comment ? I think at SANFL level he is quite strong in 1 on 1 contests. Do you think he got beaten by Fergus Watts on the weekend ? Don't think so.

He isn't crap at all. That's not where he is at. I've actually got some time for him, I think he is a good solid SANFL player, but lacks some tricks to make it at AFL player.

Remember it isn't HIS fault that he got elevated ahead of players such as Porplyzia or Parker.

he is great for sturt, you can drop him to us full time :D
I'd have thought the current situation works well for Sturt - the Crows pay for his salary, ensure his fitness is to the standard of an AFL player, but never pick him!

He might be compelled to return to Victoria should we delist him.

I've followed Sturt for many years and have been watching him on TV and live since he transferred from the Port Magpies where he wasn't getting enough opportunities. He showed some early promise but never kicked on.

He was taken in the 2000 draft as our 3rd pick behind Angwin and Handby (!) although we did get Skippy and Stiffy late. So he has been on the list or rookied for 5 years and still hasn't had a game - must be a record. He probably would have had a game late last year but pulled a hamstring and was never tested, and Parker ended up being delisted instead.

The best I could say is he's "solid" at SANFL level but I don't think Sturt would slash their wrists if he went home. He's occasionally in the best players but never dominates or is BOG (even Skipworth was named BOG for the Crows in 1 match this year), and I doubt he would be in the State side if eligible, so I can't see what he would offer at AFL level.

NO!

He will NOT be leaving the SFC!!!

Certainly not for the AFL anyway.

Good summary by cro_Magnum on his record and abilities above.

The challenge is on. Can anyone name a player on our senior list with less natural ability or potential?

You make a fair point. I too think he is a 'solid' SANFL player. Nothing special, but does seem to get the job done pretty well every week. Unfortunately, in AFL you need to have a few more strings to your bows. Being solid alone just wont cut it.

However, you did mention he 'nearly always gets beaten in 1 on 1 contests' which isn't true. As for being occassionally in the best players, I would say he's there a bit more than that. In fact just last week I think it was, he was named as Sturt's best.

Like most, I'd be super surprised if he proved he was up to AFL standard, but give credit where it is due.

p.s. - I am not related to M Smith in any way :D

Fair call, he was one of their best last week although the rest of the team were absolutely shocking.

I really hope he reads these comments, gets angry and proves us all wrong. If not he can't complain he didn't get enough time on the list but I think the AFC could have given him at least 1 game in 5 years.
