He played a great game and throwing him forward was a move i didnt hate. But if i'd read your post comparing him to Andy Otten I would have given you a laugh react too and if you said it again now I'd still laugh.
The original post was mostly about an observation on his goal kicking accuracy in past games. Which proved right in last night’s game with the 3 goals, a few from beautiful long range kicks.

The Andy Otten reference is simply my subjective opinion of a great utility player for us, particularly before his knee injury.

Not sure I see any chance of him playing forward regularly, but it's nice to know he's a swingman option if we ever need to break glass in the middle of a game.

Experiments like that are exactly what we should be doing when we face bottom sides like Richmond.
I mentioned this before, and I think the coaches already could recognise his potential forward craft and accurate kicking, as they’ve tried him more up forward more than any of the other mainstay defenders (in the recent months).

Also, I doubt he’s going to be a permanent forward, but I can see him being used more around the ground depending on where our needs are and against which teams. Max’s versatility is a very good thing for the team, and I see more benefits in experimenting and encouraging the versatility rather than locking him as a defender during games where he’s hardly needed as a defender.

Since this thread has been bumped, i'll say barring injury, max will be a 300+ game player for us and in time could easily be in line for our team of the century down the track. He just does not play a bad game and his reading of the game is elite. The club should send Jim a case of the best whiskey for choosing to have kids later in life😊

Rucci is still yelling at clouds.

Seems wherever he plays he's likely to star. Great to have such a versatile player on our list.
He's a quality player, anywhere.

Seems like he got this opportunity to be up forward cos we are obsessed with keeping Smith in the team though.

Smith was OK, but him being down back is the reason Max didn't have to be there.

Do you think he should have had a few more mares in the paddock?
Honestly, I am not against our club putting eligible players into stud, maybe not Edwards, we don't need the headache but we really should demand that our players are all in polygamous relationships.

Probably look at owning the Thunderbirds to maximise F/S opportunities

I know it's not Doug Wade but it was a little annoying that nobody mentions that Max's Dad was Norwood full forward for 4 premierships when Michaelanny was kicking a bag, but when Trainer (also a defender) kicks one it was 'in the blood' or something like that... Just some nod to the SANFL every now and again in a national competition, but if you can't acknowledge a 70s/80 heritage, which is pretty close to the last time SANFL was relevant, then it will never be acknowledged again.

Yeah, this is the bit I didn't like. It seems like we're inventing reasons to keep both Laird and Smith in the team.

In a interview after the match Max said it was his idea to play forward (confirmed by Nicks in his presser) and he also said he’d played forward a lot as a junior, so not exactly new to him

Maybe we could swap Max and Cumming around and play Max on the wing and Cumming down back ?

Dowling was probably thinking he could play that role but Nicks needs to keep Smith in the team and so we move Max forward.
Just another road block to getting a promising youngster into the team and giving them game time and experience

This is never going to happen.

And what really shits me is the commentators saying 'if he played for a Melbourne club, he'd be a star'.....

And lets not forget, John Elliott kicked up a stink when Barrie Robran was named one of the initial legends of the game in the HOF.

Its the expanded VFL. Always was and always will be.

Does Nicks have any creative thinking? At all?

Such a conservative person. You can see it with selection where he picks the most “experienced” side possible. And then when you hear this, Dawson requested the same thing. Dowling only debuted because he went into the coaches office and asked for a game (I think it was Dowling).

You REALLY think a player asking for a game was the reason he got one ??

Clearly they tried Max as a stopper on Vlaustin. And it appeared to work well - excluding the goals. Perhaps this was atrial for the Tom Stewart and Jeremy Howe types who have typically messed us up and we haven’t had an agile enough match up for.

On top of that it ts encouraging they are persisting with Taylor up forward and Edwards off half back in the Sanfl. As they are likely the best chances of getting them into the side

Before the match, the commentators implied that Nicks was going to try things with a view to playing finals at the MCG.
This was obviously one of them.

.......I don't know whether putting Murphy in the middle was another one! :)

Look, I don't mind. If he's successful like that every week, then great.

Smith also keeping Edwards out as well. Same draft as Curtin right? Surely Edwards has done enough to get a good look at him in the real stuff.

Smith was... reasonably good this week. Don't hate the selection, just feels like we aren't really done with our rebuild (are we ever? Can you ever stop trying to find talent?) so it seems a bit wrong.

I am really hopefully that they are just working on some parts of Taylor’s game to get him back in. They did give him a decent run earlier in the year and he didn’t quite grab it
Hopefully Murphy just the place holder for whichever out of Taylor and Pedlar get their act together

Good coaches take opportunities to put games into young players. Its a fair conclusion Nicks is incredibly poor at doing this. Curtin is smashing it, yet Nicks wanted him to play full back in the Sanfl...this is not a coach who is making sound decisions.

You can see why - coaching for his career. Needs to play in, and ideally win finals this year. So Smith over Edwards in that you get a more known quantity.

Problem with that is it feels like we've been in this mode for 5 years now.
