Until he dominates in a VFL game and kicks a couple of bags of goals - happy for him to stay out of senior side. This game is too important for him to play like a dud

Medders is being punished, make no mistake about this, i spoke to an ex player this week and he said to me "Medders can play as well as he likes in the twos but he didnt work hard enough in earlier games despite being warned that is what is needed to keep his spot".
MM has just about had it with him and is making him sweat, he was to come back in 100% after a few weeks but such is our form he cant get in, ive been told he doesnt have the shits and is doing all he can to break back in and be a part of it.

Tough love at its best here.

That definitely makes sense to me if true.

That's really good news as long as he's taking it the right way!! From the sounds of things his form has been great in the reserves so hopefully he can force his way in sooner or later because he is a better option than Macaffer in the long run, btw thats no slight on Macaffer who has been playing great footy of late.

Yeah that does make sense. IF true (big "if", considering track record of forum reports) it looks like he will always have that tendency, that's what finished him at Freo and they're trying to bring him back from slipping into it again. Looks like timing might be pretty good for finals but needs to come in next week or the week after at the latest I'd say to get up to seniors speed. The ball is in his court whether he makes the huge effort required to be part of it. Pretty important because he could easily be the difference between glory and valiant failure.

I tell you what this gives me a lot of encouragement. Of the players outside the 22 right now he is hands down the most important - in fact more important than a lot of the 22 itself. He is one guy that is just mecurial and can tear apart a game and change it's course. He's a gamebreaker and genuine class. He could be the missing ingredient in a premiership win I feel. It's great to see the club doing it's utmost to get the best out of him.

Macaffer's role is one of the most important in footy these days, I am not sure Medhurst has the discipline to do it well. He is not in our best 22 anymore & needs an injury to Davis, Beams, Sidebottom to get in. Seems MM wants to play extra defending types to allow Heater to play up ground which also hurts his chances

I think he is still in our best 22 but others in the team are doing their part. Caff had a quiet week last week so he would want to have a good one if Medders keeps his form up in the 2's.

He is easily still best 22, he has the x factor that only a couple of players have, and he rarely has a schoking game, he will always dish off a ton of scoring assists.
If he can get his work rate up and improve on his zoning he is definately a part of our forward line.

I was just watching our game vs Geelong in Round 9, and Medhurst wasn't in that game iether, funny, coz we kept breaking down at half forward, I just kept thinking to myself, jeez if we had someone who had reliable strong hands, and a solid low center of gravity who could keep his feet under this Geelong pressure..........

Fits the build, and he has a history vs Geelong.

I think if he doesn't play against them in the finals, and we lose, I know that I'll be very annoyed at the fact that Medhurst wasn't given a chance.
His VFL form is ace, and we know he can find a good solid partch of form, even average Medhurst is a far more effective forward than Leon.

It's certainly an interesting situation.

I'd be absolutely shocked if he wasn't in the team for the first final though.

If fit and in moderate form, he'd be ahead of these players in the current side: Macaffer, Goldsack, Toovey, Wellingham and Sidebottom.

Toovey and Leigh Brown - both resident whipping boys at different stages over the past two years - have pretty much consolidated a role in the team, though a poor month from Toovey could see him lose his spot if Goldsack keeps playing as well as he has.

Medhurst will play finals. Mick knows what he's doing. It's just player management.

Yep, but as has been said, if he doesn't play in the next 2 weeks, he'll only play finals if there is an injury.

He has trained the last session with the AFL team, for the last 4 weeks. As Leon said as given our forward pressure is the best in the comp, if you are putting on forward pressure, you are doing your job. Goals don'y matter as much. If Medders comes in he must have defensive pressure as his no.1 task. Goals will come for the team if he does that.

My tip is we are making him hungry and as a bonus keeps an ace up our sleeve.

He'll play next week.

davis out
medhurst in

Certainly looks like that. Not sure what was wrong with Leon today, looked insipid. Might be carrying something, or just burnt out. Either way needs a break, like he should have had this time last year and Medders would be the logical replacement. But again dep's on how Medders went y'day - esp with defensive pressure and 1%'ers.
The other possibility to replace him looks like McCarthy who apparently played a blinder and has huge potential.
Would be great to see Medders back, but I'd be happy to see McC given a go too. If Reid is out next week maybe can fit them both, Goldsack obviously in terrific form to cover his loss.

Yeah Davis went missing again, not good. I wouldn't be opposed to that change.

Macaffer has been fantastic and has semented his spot for another few weeks.

Davis I'm not too disappointed about. Didn't observe him closely till the final term where he showed some nice effort with tackling and chasing. He is safe for another week for doing what was expected from him.

Interested to hear about that story of Medhurst. He is a best 22 player outside our best 22 doing every effort to push his way back into the side. He should push past Lockyer (in my view) at the selection table simply because his VFL form is un-ingorable. But he will have to wait another week because the only change I see is Brown in for Reid (assuming Reid is out) with tonights very solid performance.
