Melbourne Club Statement

I noticed the club has released a Statement (Melbourne Club Statement). Is there some kind of power struggle/shift going on ?
- The important part is that the Board and a Member are battling this in the Supreme court in order for whoever the member is to now get email addresses details.

I noticed that the Statement mentions some constitution changes, but does not delve into them.

I read that email today. I found it a bit odd that the club had to hand over names and postal addresses to whoever this is?

I did immediately think of the Bartlett situation, and whether there's a background power struggle related to all that.

I’d be wary of handing over a proxy vote , especially if you don’t understand what is being proposed. I am too old to give a shit now except for the teams and how they perform.

This one's been given as a reason for why the constitution changes are outrageous, but it makes sense enough to me. If you can't get 20 people on your side, don't try to jump on the board. I don't need old mate with his two drinking buddies from the pub on my voting slip, just confuses it. You can come to my house and kiss my non-existent babies like a proper human.

A basically closed club for privileged morons. Pretty standard for them to take moves to make it harder for anyone to join the board unless they want them to.

Yea, if you wanted to stereotype a MFC board member this is exactly the type of crap you'd expect from them. The more things change the more they stay the same.

The changes are definitely sneaky, hidden beneath a flowery introduction, but this is pretty par the course for all footy clubs these days. Last year when the Collingwood board challenge was being put together you could see how much it pissed Eddie off that the members were making such a fuss and not allowing the plans he'd laid before he left to just run their course.

I'm actually not particularly fussed by the bit about raising the bar for nominations. Two references is extrodinarily low to get on the ticket and could potentially be a way for some bad actors to derail an election by flooding the ticket.

The other bit about allowing a president to stay in the position for 15 years without an election sounds a little more sus. Saying that, elections at footy clubs are pretty rare and even when they do occur it's questionable how democratic they actually are. Last year Jeff Browne was elected president from a vote of about 5000. Apparently Collingwood only have 11,000 members who are even eligible to vote!

Tricky's a funny dude, I read an interview with him where he was talking about one of his later albums and he was like "Yeah I made that in a day or two because I was broke as ****, it sucks". I appreciate that kind of honesty from an artist.

Agree. I had a skim of the changes proposed when they were emailed out a while ago but didn't dig into it much. It does seem a bit iffy, especially with the Bartlett situation in the background.
I feel similarly to A11dAtP0w3R . Seems like board members playing politics for their own purposes rather than what is genuinely helpful for the club. The all or nothing approach to the changes seems silly, and the President term thing seems a little odd, but I'm no corporate lawyer Wizz so don't know if that's uncommon for corporate structures/operations

I mean, the old VFL/AFL clubs are an anachronism in many ways. Member-based organisations of the kind of size and dollar value of the clubs are pretty rare. In fact, the only comparable example I can think of are the major political parties. Yet the clubs operate to the Corporations Act, which the political parties are exempt from (for a whole range of reasons, some suss, some logical).

I don’t mind the 2 to 20 rule, but 15 years sans election is pretty suss.

The Supreme Court thing I have zero issue with though. The world has changed, and member orgs undergoing this type of reform should be able to have members contacted by email by challenging tickets.
