Melbourne Stadium Issues

It's funny how so many people said that Telstra Dome was too small before it was built and would be a white elephant.

It was always the AFL's intention to have a stadium which could accomodate a reasonable crowd but was small enough to force members to a) buy a membership and b) shell out for a reserved seat. This would then provide the clubs with a steady stream of income to support them.

Going forward when the AFL takes control in 201?, they will be able to structure the deal so clubs such as North Melbourne, Western Bulldogs and possibly Melbourne will have access to a clean stadium that maximises their membership receipts through reserve seat sales etc.

Bump-skies.

With Olympic Park now subject to redevlopment, is there an opportunity for a boutique AFL stadium to be shoe-horned into the general area?

Only over the dead bodies of the MCC and Telstra Dome.

They will fight tooth and nail to have no other oval stadiums built within a bulls roar of either of them.

How about Hawthorn and St Kilda working together to secure a Boutique Stadium (something like Kardinia Park 30-40k), to play against the lower drawing sides. They could place it at Cranbourne or just outside of Frankston.

I think Baxter might be an idea across from the current station that could be upgraded, the Frankston bypass is going to be in that area so it would make it easy for cars to get away. The station could be upgraded to 3 platforms with express services to Caulfield and Richmond. A lot of Hawks and Saints fans come from the area only 20-30 mins from Dandenong and Cranbourne. No need to put a roof on it so that should keep costs down. Could be used for other events as well. I think that or Casey fields in cranbourne would be the ideal areas.

Big matches would still be played in the city of course.

Or even maybe Dandenong Showgrounds.

The AFL takes ownership at the end of the 2025 season. There is no guarantee the struggling sides will still be around by then, well still based in Melbourne. How much has the landscape changed in the last 17 years?

The clubs and/or the AFL are not going to spend $150mil to $200mil maybe $300mil on a boutique new stadium when they have long term contracts to play 40 plus games at the MCG and 40 plus games at the Telstra Dome and 8 games at Kardinia Park. That leaves less than 20 games for another stadium not taking into account Tassie, Darwin etc games. The clubs wont be much better off as the costs to run this stadium will be pretty high as well.

The two CEOs before dimmi are mostly to blame - TD was supposed to be the saviour of smaller clubs but has caused the problems

dimmi has been 1000% better than those two

No.

Olympic Park will now, unfortunately, become the training venue for Collingwood and Melbourne. It will be purely a training oval.
