KG kiss of death has struck again. Praises Burton non stop and then he rips his hamstring. Praises M Stevens then he goes down. Welsh as well.

Hope its not too bad for Stevens

Stevens injury possibly not as bad as first thought, he is now moving again

Wheres all those people that didnt want Steveo to retire? I want some words with you...
I am one of them and he is and was well worth the risk. Even if he plays 10 games he has provided what we need and thats an experienced forward who will guide many of the youngsters.

He shoudl be right by round 1.

To the casual observor (who missed the first 1/4 due to a SNAFU with the trams and about 1/3 of the 3rd 1/4 waiting in line at the sausage sizzle) I thought some good things came out of the game. Firstly the direct game plan was good to watch. And (from the lesser lights) the games of Skipworth (he's grown some balls over summer - really went in hard), Perrie, Hudson and even Mattner. Stevens' form prior to doing his ankle was great. He also gave a great razz up to the Melbourne supporters down the social club end at one point in the 3/4 which was very funny.
I noticed on more than one occassion we literally gave the ball to a Melbourne opponent and this happened a lot last time we played Melbourne at Optus. For God's sake why don't we wear our home guersney when we play them?
And Goodwin is an early candidate for mark of the year!!! :D

Some random thoughts. Bear in mind that I missed most of the first term, and was looking after two pre-schoolers so my concentration wasn't that great.

- Skippy - terrific, just about Crows best for mine. He may not be a booming kick, but at least he goes in to get the pill and he knows how to create some space for himself.

- Meesen - My first sight, but I'm rapt. Shows endeavour and ability, and looks like he'll know how to use his body when he gets one. Good below the knees, and presents as an option.

- Goodwin - MOTY. (Alright, not that great, but he got a nice sit). Poor old Stevo copped a headache out of it though. Seemed to spend most of the game on Heffernan who was pretty effective for the Dees.

- Stiffy - looks great down back. Knows when to leave his man.

- Rutten - can't really fault his game, though Neitz probably got about 4 in the end. At least 2 of those were from kick-ins that broke down across half back and he just wasn't in a position to man up.

- Stevo - loved his game, great to see him give it to the Dees fans. Didn't see him go down, but then again I was in front of the Carlton Social Club and he was at the other end when it happened.

- Burton - demonstrated exactly why we have a love hate relationship with him. Got one kick on the southern side flank in the second term that he butchered trying to centre it, but by the time Melbourne switched to the far wing, he was there to effect a spoil. Ran hard, burnt it a lot. Missed seeing him get injured too.

- Macca - got caught a lot, surprisingly. In 2nd gear I thought.

- Edwards - also played in second gear.

- Kenny - looked good, didn't reappear after 1/2 time, but was moving well at 3Q time.

- Hudson - never going to be more than an honest trier, but he is an honest trier. Nice leap.

- Bock - looks big, but unconvincing at CHB.

- Perrie - tried hard, played out of the goalsquare alongside Stevo, didn't really threaten. Best bodywork forward we have.

- Shirley - less said the better. Not raining enough for him.

- Bode - crumbed a nice goal, didn't see much else of his game.

- Van Berlo - lots of pine time. Showed some dash in junk time.

- Welsh - injured? Flash boots.

- Reilly - looks the part as the half-back midfield quarterback, Matthew Lappin or Aussie Jones style.

- Scott Stevens - played with endeavour, but looks panicky when he gets it.

- Hentschel - a non-factor. Disappointing.

- Begley - a real worry. Don't know if it's post Pickett stress disorder, but showed a lack of committment that cost us one of the first goals in the last quarter turnaround.

- Mattner - needs to find the right balance between having the confidence to take a man on and beat him (which he can do well) and taking a series of them on and selling someone into trouble down the line.

That's a start.

Burton may of done a hamstring :(

Commentators saying how good he was playing and is absolutely shattered!

Mattner scores behind scores:

Adelaide 12.10 82
Melbourne 10.11 71

Early prediction Burton out 4-6 weeks :(

Yeah would say he has, he was running full stretch for the ball and grabbed it.

One other thing - the boys stopped dead 15 minutes into the last quarter. Whether it's fitness, heat fatigue (it was warm but not hot) or the aroma of the sausage sizzle drifting in over L-L's shoulder I don't know. I don't think we got it across centre in the last 12 minutes. (Sorry - we did once, when Van Berlo hit someone on the chest who I couldn't pick who missed a gimme).

It was almost like they had money on themselves to lose. You are right. They just seemed to stop cold. Wouldn't be too worried and with Craig as coach I would seriously doubt its a fitness issue. Also I doubt the heat was an issue, but I did notice that whenever players came off the ice chest went straight on. Probably just saving themselves for the real stuff.
It was a slightly surreal experience all up. A weekday afternoon match in suburban melbourne. Very odd.

Thanks for the updates guys.

Good to see that some our our younger and second-tier players such as Meesen, Skipworth etc stepped up today.

Disappointing to hear, however, the amount of injuries we have suffered. Our line-up for Round 1 without Torney, Stevens, Goodwin and Burton is looking pretty fragile now.

Let's just hope Stevo makes a good recovery. :(

They don't call it the South Eastern Car Park for nothing. :p
You need to move closer to the city! ;)

Surreal is a good description.

It was nice to get out on the ground at the breaks, and great to soak up some sun. It was wierd though to go watch the boys and not be fussed really what the result was, but being more interested in seeing how some of them had improved, to get a look at Meesen and Van Berlo and to see how Craig is looking to get them playing.

A shame in some ways that Princes Park is headed for the scrapyard. It's the just about the best playing surface in Melbourne.

A disappointing fadeout, but some positive signs today. My bests were: Goodwin, Burton, Skipwoth, Rutten, Reilly. Mattner would be in there, but for as much great play as he showed us, he made a silly choice to undo it. Impressed with him all the same. Huddo should get a regular gig this season.
It's amazing that when we start losing momentum we started pushing the bloody thing wide. It's probably a confidence thing more than anything, but if what you've been doing most of the day (they did go wide more than I would've liked to have seen) was working, then give it a crack even when things are starting to look dim.
Anyone I tried to get a good look at all of the players today and must point out that I missed the first quarter because I missed the train.

Meesen and Huddo - Did a good job considering their relative inexperience and with no Clarke or Biglands to guide them along. I was particularly impressed at Huddo's work ethic (but what do you expect?!)
Van Berlo - First look at him today and I was pretty pleased. Neither here nor there, but didn't look like a chicken with his head cut off.
Bassett, McGregor, Rutten - Good job down back. I felt as though Rutten did a very good job on Neitz. As someone said earlier Neitz got a couple of goals from breakdowns off a kick in.
Edwards - The ball found him pretty well, but he wasn't exactly busting his chop out there.
Bode - What we saw of him was a little past satisfactory, but had limited game time. Kicked a nice goal.
Skipworth - I have always been a fan and was rapt to see him look good out there today. Solid on his feet and found the ball well a few times. Hilarious moment when he stood the mark to Jeff White.
Shirley, S.Stevens - Very little value to our team. Shirley made a simple turnover in the second that resulted in a goal and Stevens just didn't look there. I believe he was the one closest to Davey when he took a chest mark in the last quarter. Inexcusible.
Welsh - Didn't see too much of him. Was off injured for a reasonable portion of the day.
Johncock, Reilly - Provided some great run off the back line. Reilly looked very fluent when he had the ball today. Yeah, that's a good word...fluent.
M.Stevens - Didn't see him go down with injury but good to see him kick a few. I was sitting amongst the Melbourne fans he was working up. Great stuff. Even tossed the grass ala Lloyd at one stage. :p
Perrie - The thing that I always liked about him is that the ball would hit his hands and stick, but then he'd miss the goals with woeful kicking. But now he's not getting his bloody hands on the ball! Could be a good option, but probably best used as a decoy sadly.
McLeod - Quiet. Showed flashes, but he always teases us like that. Still looking pretty fit and ready to go, just a little uninterested today.
Burton - Looked great till he went down. A real pity because with that form heading into Round 1 he would've been very handy. Decision making still questionable.
Begley - Forgettable day. Will struggle to keep his stop, particularly since our backline is where we actually have some depth.
Ricciuto - Not much by his standards, but still some solid play in his limited game time.
Goodwin - One of our best players today. Very good leap (let's not overrate it though) and provided some good run all through the game.
Hentschel - Disappointing and the Melbourne fans loved it given the article this week.
Mattner - If his decision making gets better then he'll end up been a 100+ game player. Love his pace but too many time handballed to a guy with someone right on him. Great job getting the ball to them in inprobable situations but left them with nothing once they had it.
Bock - Neither here nor there. Looking more physically solid. I still think he's got the makings, but he's gotta show a lot more this season.
