Is our music scene overrated?

Just killing to see something fresh and different like 70's prog but that style is barren as a desert in Melbourne.

No prog bands to be seen anywhere.
you know ones that play in the style of Yes,Genesis,Crimson,Floyd,Tull.

There's nothing out there.

Bangs head on desk.

Not quite prog - they are more psych rock but I recommend you check out Sand Pebbles... when they lock into a groove they are sensational.

Does anyone else see the humour in describing 70`s prog as ..."Fresh" ???

LMAO Smasha

Why we limiting this to Melbourne. It's pretty much the same in all countries now and has been for 25 years. I honestly believe 70s prog is the most interesting and long lasting form of rock music so that would mean it's fresher than todays music. It's just smart music full of great melodies from people who were brought up in a great era and country. All the jazz and classical influences really show out and the complexities is just icing on the cake. But today, 95% of rock musicians actually rated bands like Van Halen, Metallica and Guns n Roses etc at some point. So you'll never find a natural greatness to their melodies and their songs will never stand the test of time . I was one of the lucky ones to hate most American 80s music but being brought up listening to my dad play his jazzy funky fusion on the hammond organ every day. So of course my thoughts on rock music would be very strict and i'd only like a small amount of rock music which reach a high level of interest. I draw a line very high when it comes to rock music. I only tend to listen to bands above that line or close to it. Almost everyone else would have the line alot lower and that's why they would like more bands and more styles and it would seem they have more variety in their tastes. But there are musical styles which i think lack almost every in great rock music. Smasha and I were looking at a group of 100 pidgeons at the footy yesterday and one of the pidgeons was light brown and the others were grey. We called that the prog bird because it was in the 1% range. eg 1% of people who mainly like old prog and stick to those standards mainly. All the grey birds must have like metal :p

The reason I put up "70's styled" is because that genre used instruments like Hammonds,Trons,Rhodes and Moogs and woodwind whereas todays prog is 99 percent guitar and the guitar doesn't really use many sounds only distortion.

You don't sound too lucky to me. By the sound of it you had the blinkers put on at an early age and now are unable to appreciate much of the great music that has come out and are therefore dismissive of it. There's a lot more to life than prog (or metal).

When i hear something good i enjoy it
Unfortunately i don't like alot of rock music. I usually hear something and think why do people pay for this? It's just amatuer composition, amatuer ideas written by a bloke off the street who is pretty capable at playing an instrument :o

Seriously Toby ... do you smoke pot ?

Stoners generally make more sense then MT does in my experiences.
They are also open minded with music as opposed to listening to one genre only

Thirty plus years on and prog rock still sucks. Yes? Yes? YES?? :eek:Come on let's be serious. Jon Anderson is the most annoying lead vocalist in the history of rock.

I heard some great prog/psych rock at my barber's on Saturday - the album they were playing was Jane - Live at Home. I go to a very civilised barber that serves beer, plays good music and do a decent haircut.

Perth easily has the most over rated music scene at the moment.

Living off its previous reputation. Only really worth seeing a handful of bands.

Which is the result of having to basically be a cover band to get noticed, like Tame Impala or the Silents or whatever.

Thanks Heath you ****ing ****.

Karnivool goes alright, but thats about all I have taken any notice of to come from Perth lately.

So because you only like one kind of music that has been out of fashion for 25 years and is therefore not common anymore, the Melbourne music scene is overrated?

There's not a whole lot of 1930s big band music going on in the Melbourne music scene either - I bet there's a whole lot of 80 year olds thinking that the scene is overrated.

i don't listen to music because of the "sheep factor" or because it's not in fashion.

I listen to music to be inspired and when I want to be truly inspired,I listen to 70's prog.

Christ,theworld is so dumb.

I can't believe how naive we are.

Uh, before you throw around crude insults, how about you learn to properly comprehend a sentence?

I never said you should listen to music because it's in fashion. My point is that considering prog rock HAS been out of fashion for 25 years, it really shouldn't be surprising to you that it isn't very common in the Melbourne music scene.

Yet, apparently this absence is so shocking to you that you simply had to start a thread on BigFooty about it.

This is basically a bloke standing outside Bras N Things and complaining that it's a crap store because there's nothing in it that he'd wear.

Maybe you're right - Maybe the world IS so dumb
