Dear Harry,

I think you're developing into a very important player at Geelong and your ability to hold down a key position in the backline this year might be the difference between us winning our 2nd flag in 3 years. I like the fact that you are a bit 'left of centre' with your cognac drinking - war trivia - and other unique interests ... afterall, Matthew Scarlet is not exactly normal and it has'nt stopped him becoming a star player.

What does worry me though is a glaring weakness in your game - that being your inability to keep your feet in a contest. On Friday night - not the first time it has happened - you were caught out of position far too often. Franklin or Roughead did not out muscle or out body you in any contest I can recall. More often than not you were falling to ground and effectively putting yourself out of too many contests.

You've thrown the weights around over summer and your game against Cloke in the Collingwood game showed us you have the ability to play on the key forwards -- but please Harry, work on holding your ground and at least providing a contest otherwise you'll get molested by the likes of Reiwoldt - Brown - and others. And the reality is that we need you to take some big names to free up Scarlett to play an attacking role from deep in defence without being dragged out closer to CHB as happened in the 08 GF and effectively starved us of his creative play deep inside defensive 50.

Enough of my rant - I'm off for a cognac and a good war movie.

I think you commets are pretty fair, however Friday night was really tough for him. In the last quarter when we got tired and Hawthorn were attacking, they were getting the ball in so fast that it was a 1 on 1 contest between Taylor and Franklin, nobody beats Franklin one on one. You are right though that is something he can work on, but overall i think he's becoming a great player

The contests that he lost in that last quarter werent strength issues, they all seemed to be him slipping over. i am sure coaches would be checking his footwear after watching the tape, as he does slip over a lot. Very good job on Roughead for the first 3 quarters though, he has done well on him the last couple of times.

I'm not sure if it's footwear. He just flat out panics and shit's himself when the ball comes in with purpose a lot of the time if he's on Franklin and even Cloke last year when we got belted by the Pies.

Agree I don't mind these types beating him especially when the opposition are racing it down the ground and delivering it well but keep your damn footing and make some sort of contest, looks pathetic. Make them out stretch or out body you, will learn more from it.

He does what most young defenders do - panic in 1v1 vs buddy. He played plenty of good roles last year, and I am sure at his WAFL club he played on a flank or the wing a fair bit, that is where he may end up if we had any other option to play CHB.

I only saw him slip in the last quater when Franklin ran circles around him. Up and till then he had kept Roughhead quiet. NAB cup he played well against Cloke and last year ripped up Riewoldt oin the finals.

I don't think he has any glaring issues, still a developing player and is developing very well atm. He has a great kicking action.

Had 5 kicked on him, got smashed. Lost his feet 3 times. Once with Roughy twice with Franklin.

As much as he smashed Riewoldt too, he had an awful lot go his way that day. Never seen Riewoldt that sloppy before or since.

People forget how green he is. More time and more confidence (esp on the good players) and he'll be a great player.

I think you're right .... he will be very good for us in time and has done a great job in his first year.

But he will get mauled by the big forwards if he does'nt get a chop out from someone else in the backline. Played well on Reiwoldt in the final but check out the replay and watch how many times Harley and Co were helping out .... he was hardly one on one with Reiwoldt all day.

Charlie Gardiner.

The prosecution rests, m'lud.
I saw Charlie at our Careers Fair the other week.

Poor fella was probably looking for a VFL exhibit.
