I was criticised for suggesting Denzel COULD end up being as good as SJ, and although there was NO real Pies pressure, surely his upside is huge, and most importantly , he and Duncan MUST play finals. And not saying he WILL be as good, but surely he is a chance to get near that standard, and the main point is Menzel must never be traded for Dangerfield etc

100% agreement.

Its been clear all year IMO that, fitness notwithstanding, Menzel, Duncan and Christensen were in the best 22. Add Varcoe to that as well.

Time for some humble pie to be eaten in some quarters. These boys add pace, skill and panache to an already top class outfit.

We are in with a real chance now mateys!!!

we've been calling for him to play forward for weeks but by playing him in defense, Scott has actually helped his confidence and also made him accountable which is a little less of a concern when forward. He was in everything tonight, I just finished editing a 1984 state of origin game and there was a young bloke running around in only his 9th game of football that day who's marking was eerily similar to what Menzel showed tonight:D

Denzel was outstanding tonight, simple as that. Held onto everything, was miraculous around goal and his F50 pressure was excellent.

SJ v2.0 come on down

What a convoluted post! Maybe, could be, perhaps, possibly........

Menzel is developing nicely and is a valuable part of our team. As we speak, he's in our best 22. Consistent high level performances over an extended period of time - especially when it counts and where it counts - will determine where he sits as a player.

The word trade and Menzel shouldn't be uttered in the same sentence. Nor should a comparison with SJ at the minute - to pinch a Bobbyism.

Liked what he did against Swan in round 8 how we out muscled the ball from his grasp and put on the after burners and bombed it in long to set up a goal leaving Swan behind as the pedestrian and again tonight he was outplaying the defenders one on one.

Wonder if playing him and Varcoe in the backline has really lifted them and maybe we see Varcoe move back to the forward line next week and really cause trouble.

Varcoe played up back, in the centre and in the forward line today. The role he played today will be needed against the Hawks.

yeh in general but Varcoe has been playing across the half back flank for the past 4 to 6 weeks and Menzel too has been playing down there since his return from injury but it will be exactly what Hawthorn will go into the final expecting with Varcoe starting back. He's been quite pivotal in our forward momentum and breaking the lines to really upset the press so you right, he sure will be important next week. Having two players with explosive speed in Wojak is really going to give us an extra dimension that only Chris Scott could have thought of. So far it's been a master move by the coaching staff.

Thread was directed in defence mode for obvious reasons. The "potential" comparison was made when it was suggested by someone that to get Dangerman, we should trade Menzel. I agree, appalling. And I still maintain this teenager has the upside at the same stages of their careers as SJ, and watching the replay after the match, all the commentators, including Harley, who would know, repeatedly make the comparison.

Yes, and that idiot was a Geelong supporter too. Doubt he will pat himself on the back for that post....but you never know.

I just love how tall he plays, such a good mark for his size, and so good around goals.

I'm glad Scott gave him a couple of weeks off when he looked tired, and then persisted with him these last 2 weeks, he really repaid the faith tonight.

To create a Menzel:

Take one Jimmy Bartel overhead marking...
Take 2 Stevie J's skills and vision
Take one Kane Tenace's pace....
Add a pinch of Rooke for toughness (any more than a inch is dangerous...lol)
blend for 2 mins...

and shizam!

a Menzel. :D

Our drafts have just been crazy good lately....

Im passing the hat around to build a statue out front of Kardy park for Wells....

Go Catters...

( ps - and yes this is the only time Tenace and Menzel will ever be compared favourably outside their number...;)

Your not the only one to see it Veedubs.

From Rohan Connolly's game review in The Age "Menzel, looking more like Steve Johnson than Steve Johnson these days, had another two on his way to a personal-best five."

Hopefully thats the end of the defensive experiment. He is a natural forward - play him there.

I think he can eventually evolve into a FF , he is good 1o1. Give a few preseason and he will get that core strength right up , he will be so hard to move off the ball. Has a bit more vertical than SJ.

He is too talanted to be played back for too long. Others can do that but not do what he does in the forwardline.

He matches up well against the Pies. He kicked three last time and im sure that has been a big part of their recipe for the finals.

Finally! We move him to the forward line after the ridiculous stints at half back and BANG....BOG.

The only question being now is how do we accomodate Corey and Lonergan?

To use a 'Newmanism'. Oh really!;)

FWIW I still think Duncan will be the better player.
Pretty happy with that thought to be honest. Because Menzel is going to win games off his own boot in a couple of years.

Have to bow to those who made the call on Christensen earlier in the year.
He is insanely good. Just such a natural predator of the pill.

I am dead-set gonna perform fellatio on MENZEL!!!!!!!

And I might even give Duncan & Bundy wristies!!!

So much love.

I like these kids too. But I am getting very concerned that there maybe some very sticky keyboards out there in Cat Fan land.
