hitting Mitchell on the chest in the opening minutes of last years semi wasn't so hot, neither was when he was in a paddock and missed Seedsman by 10m in another paddock when we played the Hawks this year.

the latter one was really quite atrocious to be honest, considering the only pressure he was under was coming from his own mind to fluff that kick when we could have iced the game really tells me something about his ceiling.

people might say that's harsh but compare the way he impacts the really hard games with performances like Knight's game against the Dogs last year or Cameron against the Swans this year and its like night and day. Those two really will themselves into the contest and that is far more valuable than looking like a freak against the middle of the road teams.
Smith was supurb other than that bad error in the hawks game and was a big reason we were in front.

Probably the most creative and damaging HB in the game.

In my humble opinion he is worth more to us where he is.
Probably

Possibly

But we wouldn't know

And we can always move him back

Well then Cameron's game against Sydney counts for nought as well. Same result.

We need more Smith's and Cameron's not less.
the result may be the same but playing like Cameron did when half the team forgot to get off the bus is a damn sight more impressive than having a good game, getting the opportunity to ice it off your own boot and coughing it up.

compared to saaay, Cameron running the length of the ground to receive a pass and kicking a goal to put us 7 points up with seconds left on the clock.

So I was wandering who these plenty of players were that have been delisted and gone on to anything besides Mitch Robinson who was effectively sacked for lying and fighting.

It doesn't appear that it happens very often at all

For the main reason being that the existing club is pretty aware of the players they have on their books and if they have anything left to offer

Smith has great ability but he's one of the flakiest players in the side unfortunately.

if he was consistent he'd be one of our top 5 easily but there's a gulf between his best and worst games. I'm quite worried about his mounting concussions too to be honest.
Wouldn't really pick him for an inside midfielder with how he plays.

Best is fantastic but can go missing for huge amounts of time, would have thought as someone that was an inside midfielder he'd be able to go hunt/find his ball a little more.

Still a great player when he's going, just be nice if he was a little more consistent.

I've only skimmed through the last few pages and excuse me if I've read the gist wrong.

But what shits me is the criticism of Smith which really should come down to a damming assessment of our coaching.

Smith as a damaging half back is lethal and that's why teams put energy into curtailing him. They don't do that because he's Mackay, they do that because he's that Important to us, just think back to the West Coast game.

Now when that's happening, move him! Put him into another damaging position!!

I've read opinions that he can't play as an inside mid, so far that's based on an opinion based on where we've played him. As a junior he played as an inside mid.

Try him there FFS before we rule him out as being able to play him there. Again I repeat, JUST TRY, if it doesn't work what have we lost?????

if we were looking for someone to float around for something substantial in next years trade period he'd be top of my list. I said that months ago.
I think flaky is a bit harsh and I certainly wouldn't look to trade him, we're short enough on elite kicks as it is - but I'm with you on the concussions. Really hasn't looked the same player since he copped a couple early last year. Up until then was on exactly the curve expected of such a talented junior and was probably the best half back in the game. He's had some good games since then but just looks under the level we know he's capable of consistently. In reality, at his best, he's a difference player, a guy that can change games with his pace, vision and kicking. Be huge to get him back to top form.

Barlow reminds me a lot of Cloke they were both very very good players when on song but have met their use by date. I simply can't think of any players that have met this use by date and gone on to perform better or at the same level. Stevie J looked well below his best last year and dare I say it a little old to be out there, Kelly for the bombers was probably the best but nowhere near the levels he produced for Geelong and he was no star anyway and would never have got a gig if essendon didn't lose half their players. It's sad that these guys will meet that use by date but the clubs are fully aware of the right time, Hawthorn didn't let Mitchell go because he was at the top of his game they know he's on the decline yet still won their B and F. They did it with Lake the other year who felt he could have played on. We have kept Thommo but every supporter knows it's not because we want him in the 22 but it's for coaching and development.

Most are not respecting Freo's inside knowledge as to why they made their decision to let Barlow go. To suggest they don't need him is ridiculous, he was a quality player and is a better midfielder than over half the ones they have but the use by date has hit in their opinion. If dear picks it up and we had walker getting older would we cut him because we had an abundance of forwards? Thee players are let go when the club feels they could become a liability rather than an asset, I have no doubt VB would have played on if the club had let him, we are missing midfielders and he could probably still play some better games occasionally than say Milera, because Milera is so young but what a dumb move it would have been to keep him on the list

You know Stevie J kicked 43 goals (his biggest haul for 6 seasons) and averaged almost 20 touches a game this year?

Had a chat to a current Freo player yesterday, I asked about MB and he said that he had spoken to him last week and at that time MB said it was likely he would end up at the AFC.

Still on 'L' plates, I see! When will you attain 'P' plates?

I still have to collect the skull of Dagorath, then perform the Rite of Alakabeth and defeat the hydra Sryinx in battle, and I'm good

Great post!
I still feel that those concussions in 2015, really stymied his developmental!
