"Mike Hussey's place in Australia's World Cup squad is in doubt, with the inspirational batsman reportedly facing at least a month on the sidelines with a hamstring tear."

"Scans on Hussey's left hamstring revealed the left-hander has ripped part of a tendon off the bone high near the gluteus muscle under his buttocks, according to reports."

Obviously a massive blow to our batting stocks for the World Cup.

If Michael Hussey isn't fit by the time the World Cup begins (our first game is against Zimbabwe on February 21), who should be his replacement in Australia's World Cup squad of 15 (assuming David Hussey is already in the squad)?

****ing hell! This is just what we needed, our best ODI bowler out and one of our two true form batsmen.

Hodge has to be assured if Hussey can't play.

Seriously bad news - can't see how they can name him in the squad now.

Unfortunately with a squad of only 15, you can't take across 2 of your key top 6 batsman having no match fitness going into the tournament (Ponting, Mussey) - even 1 is a stretch. By virtue of being captain, Ponting is afforded that luxury, which means Mussey unfortunately has to miss.

For mine -that means that Dussey is a certainty to go, and that 1 more batsman has to be added to the squad. Hodge is the obvious choice (and would be the correct one), but we all know that the selectors won't admit their previous failings, so it will probable be someone else

That is really depressing. No Harris and that injury sounds like no Mr Reliable..

Where our one day team is concerned, that is about as bad as news gets. Who is going to fish them out to a decent score after some of the blokes in the middle order have crawled along?

They may have to reconsider Ferguson or Marsh. It will be the biggest shock if they genuinely consider Hodge.

What are the rules re: replacing players from the 15? I was under the impression you couldn't...

Ferguson would slot straight into Hussey's place a fulfill a similar role, but Marsh is in top form.

Can we name Hussey in the 15 released in the next couple days and then select Marsh and Ferguson and let them bat it out over the next six one-dayers. Then if Hussey doesn't come up, just replace him?

I'm pretty sure we can't, but it'd be advantageous to give those two (hell, give Hodge a run too) the chance to claim the spot.

You can bring someone in from outside the original 30 if injury occurs. I would go for Finch, seriously good bat who can bat from opener to lower order.

ferguson

hodge should be in on his own merit not as a replacement for huss. i'd like to see him at 3 but punter won't give up that slot for his swansong. so hodge at 4. clarke at 5

ferguson is a like for like replacement for huss

From outside the 30 only?

My understanding is that you can only bring in a replacement for a player that gets injured. Existing injuries don't count. If a player has an existing injury, you can only replace them if they get a new injury.

And the replacement doesn't have to be from the original 30. In fact, the current squad of 15 doesn't actually have to be from the original 30. Picking 30 "probables" is a PR exercise more than anything.

At least, those were the rules in previous World Cups. No idea if it is still the case.

FWIW, Hussey turns 36 in May. This could actually be the end of his career :(

This is exactly what's wrong with CA. Time to move on and start planning for the future. Hodge has 1, 2 years max left. What's the point? Get Callum Ferguson in NOW!

The World Cup is in February. We can play for the future after that. We play to win the World Cup NOW!

What? It's the World Cup. You play to win. You rebuild to win the World Cup ffs.
