Michael Jackson - Dead

Well then I guess music should cease to exist then. I mean what is the point? No one will ever reach that pinnacle again.

He deserves to be remembered as a true great. I'm not one for comparing different musicians in different era's with different styles, but I do know that he is up there with the very best of them.

It doesn't cease to exist for those who like it.

But it doesn't deserve to be held up as some of the greatest music ever just because he died.

That's just being reactionary.

Probably the greatest entertainer that mankind has ever witnessed.

I can't remember a death as big as this in a long time. You would probably have to go back to Princess Di. As far as the music industry goes, this overshadows Cobain and you would probably have to go back to Lennon in 1980.

an interesting thought is to compare michael jackson to mozart

both were child prodigies in the music industry

mozart was said to be an adult in his years as a child, and a child in his adult years

this story sounds scarily familiar...

for the record, it was never going to be too late for michael jackson

As for whether MJ was a kiddie fiddler or not, well none of us really know. I think Dave Chappelle sums up the situation the best:

This is a very ignorant post.
He didn't just 'turn into a weirdo' and 'piss it all away'.

He basically had no childhood, was a star well before the age of 10 and was abused by his father. It is enough to have an affect mentally on anyone.

he was 500 million in debt.. so he had just about pissed all away

hanging his child over a hotel balcony railing. i dont think being abused by his dad is a good excuse for that

did his dad's abuse make him turn his nose into a cardboard piece with skin over it

Massive LOL at those saying that his music wasn't much chop.

Huge weirdo, but up there with Elvis and The Beatles as the most significant artists ever - both musically and performance-wise.

His tunes are damn good, and I hate pop.

Hiss music does very little for me. Didn't mind the Jackson 5 stuff, good to boogie to, but please don't try and put him up there with the Beatles because there is no logical argument to support it.

His biggest influence on music is largely to do with adding dance routines and flashy film clips in order to sell huge amounts of records. Not something to be proud of and certainly doesn't have any artistic merit.

LOL, Katt Williams is funny as hell talking about Michael Jackson:

But that's it some good pop songs nothing more. Billie Jean,Beat It are fun songs to listen to but hardly great. He was a great writer of melodies for sure but his songs were mostly shallow RnB.

Never mind The Beatles even his brit contemporaries like Duran Duran or Depeche Mode were far superior musically.

And then there's Prince..

Prince shits on MJ from a great height, obviously.

Sad news. Only a few weeks ago I was having a conversation about him with my mate and we both agreed that he has pretty much the best, most distinctive and original voice in popular music. RIP

*cough* Thriller highest selling album of all time *cough*

It's an interesting dilema.

His music had basically been average fair for quite a while now.

It was really only the fact he was a freak that kept people even slightly interested in him.

Which is why while there's lots of media coverage it's not the same as Lennon or Elvis dying in terms of out pouring of grief.

Alot of the noise being made is by the many, many people who didn't like him and are giving him the good riddance send off.

For what it's worth I think if Mick Jagger died it would get a tonne of coverage to.

so he was set to do 50 shows in england only because people thought he was a freak?

With respect, thats a pile of shit.

He wouldnt be in my favourite couple dozen of artists but he will be remembered in the top 2 or 3 pop artists of all time, if not the first and deservedly so.

To suggest that not one song from a bloke who owns the highest selling record of all time, has had 13 number one singles and has sold the 3rd or 4th most records in music history would get anywhere near a greatest songs is sublimely ignorant. Simple as that.

What I can't beleive is that there is a picture of Tupac posted in this thread. I would say that the only similarity is that they were both black, but even that is debatable. Tupac was a mediocre rapper who gained most of his fame from getting shot. MJ got famous because he made some of the most memorable songs of the last 40 years

i must admit i did laugh when i saw someone comparing tupac's death to michael jackson.

tupac is a great of his genre, but there would be very few people who would rate his impact as higher than jackson's.

Clearly Prince is far more talented.

And just because he's had X amount of #1s etc doesn't mean his songs warrant inclusion in any list of greatest songs.

Polished pop songs without much depth like most of todays RnB.
