Well the obvious answer to this would be if one of "our own" was good enough they would have the job. However no one had the past history of success in international cricket that Mickey Arthur had (refer to Saffa's number 1 ranking).

Let's face it Mickey inherited a shambles of a team. 10++ top quality international standard fast bowlers. No good batsmen in the country below the age of 28 and the worst bunch of spinners of an country in the world....... yea but lets blame the new coach for all that

agreed there. not much any coach could have done here.

there was always going to be a tough period once gilly, warne, mcgrath, hayden and co retired. but i think most thought we had weathered the storm when we really took it to the saffa's in 2009 (?) and mitchell johnson was looking like malcolm marshall, curtley ambrose and joel garner rolled into one.

in reality the immediate aftermath wasn't that bad thanks to still having ponting and hussey to rely, hayden stuck around for a little while, and guys like stu clark, ryan harris and doug bollinger emerged as quality test quicks although none of those three got a full career unfortunately.

i don't think people fore-sore a second dip when those aforementioned blokes also called it a day but it hasn't been that bad. we've had some real bad days no doubt, but we are a clear 3rd/4th best team in the world. and there is some distance between us and india and those below us (and also some distance between england and south africa in front of us).

if you're national team shows its worst run of form for 30 years, and you're still a genuine top 4 team, then things are going pretty good yeah?

and i think we're building well. quick bowling is well sorted and there are numerous good young batsmen around the country so hopefully a few of them develop.

there's also a few developing spinners, although making the leap from talented spinner to top line international spinner is the hardest journey in cricket.

Just one of many problems I think. I'm not sure if giving the captain and coach more or less control is the right way to do it. At the moment though both seem to be rubbing people the wrong way, although I don't blame either for Watto's sooking.

It's hard to know what he's really like as a coach unless you're in the inner sanctum but he comes across as a friendly, approachable guy in the media, Being a nice guy doesn't mean he's a good coach though.

Oh come on, this must be the most disorganised Aussie Touring side since the Packer years.

Ponting quit cos he was the old boy, Hussey announced his own retirement 'cos he would have been dropped.

.......Mickey Arthur has 2 mates, Warner & Pup, and he could't drive a car through a gate.

the backroom staff should go first, can't keep a fit xi on the park every tests and having to make up bullshit to cover it up has made it worse

arthur shouldn't be the coach. boof lehmann is the next coach

Lehmann should probably be next cab off the rank, doing a great job with Queensland.

I don't care that he's not Australian, I just think he's a useless prick.
Don't really understand this POV. Either you hold the coach responsible for the performance of his side, and he gets credit for moulding the Proteas into wordbeaters, or you admit that his job is mostly determined by the players at his disposal and don't criticise him too harshly for current results.

Either way it's a bit difficult to say that a coach with his record is useless.
