This has been discussed in the past, it happens in other forms of sport around the world, what are your thoughts on a possible mid-season draft??

What implications would there be??? wWhat would it involve and how could it operate???

Disscuss and thoughts please:thumbsu:

You go with what you start with and leave it at that level playing field.

Injuries are covered by the rookie draft , ie if Adelaide had no LTIs then they would likely not participate in any draft.

The other thing is to look at the player and what ''fairness'' there should be. Move to a new state , organise schooling, housing and make financial considerations based on an expected contract... if they are ''moved'' there is a financial penalty on the player to consider.

The AFL had a june draft in the early to mid 90s. It was a waste of time, about the only time we ever participated in it was when we nabbed Jim West from Sydney. A better idea is to enable a trading period during the early part of the season.

Sorry that is more what I meant was a trading period:o :thumbsu:

I guess the other thing to consider is salary caps etc and which club is paying the contract of the player, a mid-season trade period would put alot of players on one year contracts.

Are we able to pick up rookies at any stage during the year? I think that's the best way to do it, just grab rookies from the local comp at our leisure.
I think this has some merit. Obviously for us and the WA sides it would be ideal. I would like it more to be an extended list with a rookie list and an injury list ie older players within the local system are named and paid a small retainer and train 1 night a week with the AFL club while playing for the local side as normal with no interfernce from the AFL side

But then we wouldnt be able to pick 4 rookies (if it remained that number) during the off season. If we did and then chose someone else, we would have to delist rookies we have't even tried yet. A bit unfair don't you think?

I still think rookie draft should be only once a year, my thoughts are more inclined at a mid-season delist/trade period.

Ok let’s assume the AFL has sectioned this mid season draft and it starts this Monday morning and runs until 2pm Wednesday afternoon.

What sort of player do we realistically aim for and what realistically will we have to give up? And will this help our immediate future?

It will be the same as the end of year trade period we have now; we will only participate because of necessity not because of demand.

Remember Neil Craig doesn’t like the trade period so he will be reluctant to look at this as a viable option.

See this is why the AFC is now finding itself in the position it is now, because we have not been agressive enough during trade week, hell Tarrant was up for trade why didnt the AFC make a play for him??? They already knew that Hentschel was out for 2007, yes Tarrant has had some off feild issues, but he is still a proven forward who marks the ball and kicks goals.

I think it makes a lot of sense for there to be a longer trade period - I think ten months of the year, stopping a maybe six rounds before the end of the year - plus having the ability to add players on as rookies year round. Every sport has the ability to add players from lower leagues to the end of their list, if they can fund the addition.

It seems crazy for a side to write off the year if they have as terrible injury run.

I'd prefer a transfer window system with a first round beginning, say, from October 1 to the week before the Draft. This would mean the pick order and playing lists would be finalised prior to preseason training so both undrafted and existing players knew exactly where they stood at this crucial time.

A second mid-season transfer window, a shorter period of a week or two, could coincide with the midseason break.

The reduced timeframe would be designed to result in trades that were bare necessities - say if a side had lost nearly all of its bigs to injury, much like the Doggies did last year - and not just cosmetic top-ups for a finals tilt.

Rookies on their first contract should be immune to all trade-windows except in extreme circumstances, compassionate grounds due to a bereavement, etc.

Those were my thoughts and how I would like to see it setup if it ever did happen.
