With the bye week upon us now is the ideal time to have a look back at what has been an eventful first half of the season as well as have a look at what is to come in the second half of the season.

Season So Far
Best Win: Round 13 v Dockers, interstate, shafted by the umpires, back to back interstate trips
Worse Loss: Suns at Marvel. They're woeful in Melbourne yet beat us easily
Best 5 Players: Taranto Baker D.Rioli Nankervis Bolton
Under Performing Players: Cumberland Dow Sonsie
3 Most Improved Players: Ross Ryan Miller

Predictions For Rest Of Season
Can We Make Finals: Possible, we need to be in the 8 before the final 5 games. Melbourne (MCG) Saints & Dogs(Marvel) & Port (Adelaide Oval) are 4 of the last 5
Will McQualter Become Next Coach: Doing everything right at the moment.
Will Lynch Play This Year: If we're in the mix for finals yes, if not then no
Will Jack & Cotchin Retire: Still think they do, but current form opens the debate about whether they will.

Nice mid season review, RT.

For mine, there are a few factors to take in consideration too.

  1. Taranto & Hopper
The biggest upheaval this year to our on-field performance is the inclusion of these two midfielders. Has it been a success? Imho, the answer is no...then yes!:confusedv1: When they first arrived, I believe, their inclusion was negative.

Negative because -
  • Dimma changed our game plan to try and include them PLUS our existing midfielders, all into the same team. It threw out what had been the highest scoring forwardline in the league to one of the worst. The concept of creating a powerful midfield brigade with enviable depth was admirable but, ultimately, it robbed Peter to pay Paul. We lost our small forward run, pressure and versatility.
  • Taranto and Hopper did not know our game plan, defensively and offensively. Both players were just bombing it into our forwardline and not using our outside runners. Additionally, they were often out of position in our zone and, more importantly, around stoppages. Finally, they threw out our inside mix so our other midfielders became confused and began to under perform. All that was needed with these factors is time but when you are THE key cog in the engine room, you set up the play for everyone else. We can see the stark difference now that Taranto knows our system and how to work with our other rovers - we're dominating!
Positive because -
  • Taranto is a star midfielder of the the competition. He really is an accumulator the likes we have not seen at Tigerland for decades. He was not using the ball well initially, but now he is working with the midfield team to be very damaging.
  • We have shored up our midfield for the next decade. Taranto and Hopper are relatively young and are learning the Richmond Culture so that they can leads the younger mids along the same path to future glory.
  • They give us immediate depth which is becoming increasingly important with an injury prone Prestia and aging Cotchin.

2. Dimma's Disappearance

Dimma stepping down felt like the end of an era and could be argued as the biggest factor to our performance in 2023...but I don't think so. Mini has let the players play and told the leaders to take the team in the direction they feel best for the rest of the year. As a result, we've reverted to the game plan that won us some manner flags for so many years. Dimma leaving actually allowed the players to step up and change what wasn't working. I'll always love what Dimma did for our great club but its the club as a whole that gave us success, not one man alone. These last three weeks are clear proof of that fact.

3. One Soldier falls...

We have depth. We prove it over and over again. Lynch's injury was the only injury I felt that we couldn't cover but we've proved that we can...sort of. Lynch is still, arguably, our most important player. He gives us a target, straightens us up, acts as a link between our backline and forwardline and creates space for our other forwards. Without him there, we were reliant upon an aging Jack. No one expected Jack to play like he did in 2017 but over the past couple of weeks he really did turn back the clock. Others have stepped up too - Ryan and Miller. We're scoring from our half backs and midfielders.

The forwardline was failing miserably until Mini/the coaching staff/leaders reverted to a forward structure that works. Suddenly we're dangerous again when it goes forward. We have become efficient in attack again - one of the best in the league in the past three weeks. Playing Pickett forward, Ross on the wing, Cotchin/Dusty in the midfield, Short off halfback, works but the emergence of Ryan, Clarke, Young, R-S, is incredibly important. Couple that with the form of Banks and Brown at VFL level and it set us up for a run at the finals.

I think we'll give the rest of the season a good shake but I worry that the negatives from the start of the season might be the anchor that's too tough to drag into the finals. I think we can do it and if we do; with Lynch back, a better structure, a more cohesive team and greater depth - I really think we can push another flag in 2023! Mark it down, now! :grinv1:

AFL Players Review

1. Nick Vlastuin - started the season in decent form then seemed to drop away after Broads suspension, however since Broad came back into the side Tigga has trended back towards the player he was during the premiership years. Will be very important in the second half of the year as we push towards a possible finals appearance.

2. Dylan Grimes - hasn't really been at his best this year as he became the sole captain once Nankervis got injured and the back 6 were under the pump because of issues further up the ground, like Tigga has started to get back to being the rock the back 6 is built around.

3. Dion Prestia - another premiership hero who struggled at the start of the season, likely due to trying to build a playing relationship with both Taranto & Hopper, eventually got shifted out of the midfield to play across HF. Since McQualter has taken over has seemingly got back to being the workhorse midfielder that we relied upon.

4. Dustin Martin - has worked his way into the season and is now spending a lot more time in the midfield either at the centre bounce or pushing up as an extra midfielder once the ball is in play. Another who will be very important in the run home, especially if he can start converting scoring opportunities into goals.

5. Jack Ross - hung around the fringes of the side to start the season, before finally getting settled into a wing role replacing Pickett. Has now become a solid role player who holds his width well and provides the team an out when coming out of D50. Very much a Brandon Ellis clone, albeit a bit better on the contest/traffic.

7. Liam Baker - Mr Fix It has been shifted around the park trying to plug holes as the team struggled early on. Seems to have settled into a mid/forward role since McQualter took over and is having a big impact in games. Shaping up as a possible future captain.

8. Jack Riewoldt - had 14 goals in his first 6 games in what was a solid start to possibly his last season. Then had a 4 week period where he only kicked 2 goals in 4 games, which despite us winning 2 had many questioning if Jack was done, especially when he struggled in the Bombers & Port games, which seems to have been because of our delivery into F50 more than Jack playing badly(although they said he played hurt), since then has kicked 7.7 in 3 games which comes with a change in the way we deliver inside 50.

9. Trent Cotchin - started the season being shifted out of the midfield and into the F50 and looked lost at times. Had occasional runs through the middle where he still impacted. Like Jack the poor run of form had some suggesting that we get him to game 300 ASAP and then nudge him off into retirement. However like Grimes Prestia Martin & Jack a new approach from McQualter seems to have re-lit the fire in Cotchin and he has gone back to the type of form we grew accustomed to in his prime. 28 disposals in game 299 followed by 29 disposals and arguably BOG in game 300 could have Trent primed for one more run and possibly like Jack another season.

10 Maurice Rioli - has once again struggled in his 3rd season, with a mixture of poor form & injury having seen him miss around half the season so far. Came back into the side against the Saints and looked energized. With our change in tactics inside F50 Maurice could become very important at the feet of our key forwards.

13. Hugo Ralphsmith - came into the side to replace Broad when he was suspended and struggled to settle into the role, had slowly become more comfortable in the role and has now found himself seemingly rotating between starting 22 & sub with Clarke. Provides good run and carry through the midfield and is getting a good opportunity to develop as a HB/wing. Has now reached the 30 game mark and it's usually between now & 50 games that most players generally become settled into teams.

14. Tim Taranto - for a bloke not inside the top 150 players at the start of the season he has come on with a rush, to be sitting top 4 in the coaches votes and possibly a top 5 Brownlow medal contender if we continue to win games in the second half of the year. At the rate he is going the trade we made to get him will seem like a steal. Should be an All Australian this year and probably wins the Jack Dyer by a mile.

15. Jayden Short - much like his mate Baker, Shorty was another Mr Fix It early in the season where he'd alternate between back, midfield & even forward. Since McQualter took over has been slotted back into the defensive unit and has provided a real attacking threat coming off HB kicking big goals in the last 2 games. Will be another important player in the run home as we look to use his attacking game to turn defense into attack quickly.

17. Daniel Rioli - started the season in fine form with his run and carry off HB setting up plenty of counter attacking opportunities. Has slowed a little as teams look to put time into him as well as Short moving back taking some of the rebounding away from Daniel. Will be in the mix for the top 5 of the Jack Dyer and like Short will be very important coming off HB in the rest of the season.

19. Tom Lynch - 9 goals in 4 games was a solid start to the season for Tom, before a broken foot curtailed his season. Some question marks about whether he comes back this season or not as he is still in a moon boot as we head into the bye. Would be great to have him come back before the final 5 games of the season as they shape as the keys games for us in our push for finals if the next 4 games go according to script.

20. Ivan Soldo - another big man who has had 2023 ruined by injury. Had the 1 game against the Suns, before his injury flared again. Returned this week in the VFL and will look to build into the second half of the season.

21. Noah Balta - been a bit of a roller coaster ride for Noah this year, with some good games interrupted by some hair pulling moments. Has seemingly settled now that the old firm of Grimes Broad & Vlastuin are back together to provide him with some leadership for when the rushes of blood occur. Must remember that he is still only 23 with 76 games to his name, so not even in his prime years yet. Will have some big battles in the run home and if he can win/halve more than he loses we'll be in great shape.

22. Jacob Hopper - the other big recruit from last year who hasn't quite been able to impact the way Taranto has, but showed enough in his first 8 games with the club to suggest he'll also be worth what we traded to get him. Remember he's here for another 6 years after this and can still play an important role not just this year, but also over the next 6 as well.

25. Toby Nankervis - showed how important he is to us when he went down injured. As co-captain he sets the tone for the rest of the team to follow with his aggression in & around the contest, not just winning contests, but where he also provides protection for the midfielders by letting the opposition know that he is around to cause pain. If he stays fit the rest of the year we could be right there when the whips are cracking.

27. Thomson Dow - had 1 game to try and cement his spot in the 22 after a strong run of games at VFL level, however a combination of VFL byes as well as being held over for the AFL meant that he'd not played a lot of footy by time the opportunity presented. After that game he still missed a bit of footy as well being held over for the GWS game. Played the last 2 in the VFL and after a struggle against Werribee, looked back to his best against Sandringham this week. Will need a big second half of the season to remain on the list in 2024.

29. Shai Bolton - behind Taranto has been our second most consistent player, has gone from a HF who had cameos in the middle to being a mainstay through the middle adding both speed and class through the middle. Starting to draw tags, but it's not really impacting his ability to hurt the opposition. He can either get plenty of the ball and hurt up the ground or he can go inside F50 and can hit the scoreboard. Unlikely to kick the 45+ goals he did last year, but his impact is more across the board now, which makes him even more of a threat.

31. Rhyan Mansell - one of the whipping boys, who came in to take Castagnas position in the 22 to start the season and was playing well enough to hold his position for 12 of 14 games, either starting in the 22 or coming on as the sub. A dodgy suspension will see him miss the first 2 games after the bye, but I'd expect him back after that given his impact this year.

32. Samson Ryan - started the season in the VFL and quickly earned a call up, kicked 3 in his first game this year before enduring a run of games where conditions didn't really suit. Once Lynch and Nankervis went out was asked to step up and become number 1 ruck and 2nd key forward. Did well holding his own in those games before hitting the wall over the last 4 weeks, unfortunately got hurt against the Saints and could face a stint on the sidelines, which probably isn't a bad thing anyway.

33. Kamdyn McIntosh - hasn't quite been the same this year seemingly struggling to find his best form as the team struggled. However, like a lot of the older blokes seems to have found a renewed enthusiasm since McQualter took over and has started to put some decent games together. Currently holding the wing position, but could come under pressure with the likes of Clarke Ralphsmith Banks & Brown starting to put their hands up for that spot as the team transitions to the next generation.

34. Jack Graham - an interrupted preseason with a toe injury saw as well as a bit of a look at a move to Port saw Jack start the season slowly. As he has worked back to full fitness he has gradually got back to his gut running best. Would probably like to be getting a bit more of the footy as the season progresses, but is still an important cog in how we structure up through the middle & up forward.

35. Nathan Broad - started the season strongly, but then got himself rubbed out for a month due to a dangerous tackle against Adelaide. With him missing the back 7 seemed to struggle for form as they had to adjust to slightly different roles. Since his return though, they've looked much better as a unit and teammates have also played better individually as well. Another important player in the the second half of the season.

38. Noah Cumberland - one of the kids a lot of supporters had high hopes for, has had an inconsistent season so far. Initially left out of the season side to work on some weaknesses in his game, he finally got a chance in round 3 as the sub where he came on and had an impact in a game where we were struggling and forcing his way into the starting 22. Following week against the Dogs was a mixed game, where offensively he has a good game, but let himself down with some lapses of concentration. After an explosive 1st quarter against the Demons where he kicked 3 goals he struggled to have an impact in the next 3 quarters and comments made by Hardwick may have rattled his confidence. He struggled the next couple of games before being dropped but good games got him a reprieve as the sub against the Giants. However an injury has since sidelined him and it will be interesting to see how he returns.

40. Tyler Sonsie - like Cumberland above had plenty of fans looking forward to what he could do in his second season, however he has struggled, not just at AFL level, but also at VFL level with his performances up and down like a yo-yo. Hopefully it's just a case of second year blues and the kid can work his way back into contention for the 2024 season as he is part of the group of kids who have seemingly been targeted because of the ability to use the ball really well by hand or foot.

42. Judson Clarke - alongside Ross & Ralphsmith has beenon the fringes of the 22 all year. Has managed to feature in 12 games so far and shown glimpses of his speed and clean ball use. Slowly starting to feel more comfortable at the level which reflects in teammates not being afraid to use him linking up between D50 and F50.

45. Tylar Young - picked up in the rookie draft after 1 season in the VFL program, Tylar came from nowhere to become a fixture in the back 7 once Gibcus got hurt. Hasn't quite had the same impact as Josh did in his first year, but has been solid enough and has also been backed to handle some big roles with mixed results. Still for a player that 18 months ago was playing bush footy he has come far and has plenty of scope for improvement left.

46. Ben Miller - another fringe tall who suddenly got thrust into a leading role with Lynch and Nankervis going down. Has played 8 games so far this season with his best outing being against St Kilda last weekend. Will be required to continue the support role in the second half of the season until Lynch returns and hopefully the confidence he gained last week holds him in good stead.

50. Marlion Pickett - started on the wing as usual, but circumstances saw him moved to F50 to provide Jack with some extra support as a mobile marking option. Has run into some off field troubles which could curtail his season. Gale suggested he'd be available for selection after the bye, but it remains to be seen whether the coaches & match committee bring him back or not.

What a great effort that was RT: Comprehensive, thorough & fair all the way through. Great read, Thanks

I think Pickett is important as a utility for our team and he has played very well this year and will be straight back in the team.
Jack Ross has inproved a lot.
Judson Clarke looks classy and can kick goals.
Short is very valuble with his long kicking and those long goals are gold for us.
Cumbo needs to be played consistently to let him settle and learn imo. He can win us games with his goal sense.
Dustin is building through the year and will peak in the finals again.
Taranto is fantastic but I think we still need an elite clean kicking mid.

Nah best win was against the giants. Backs against the wall, momentum going against us. Giants are in good form and are a serious team at home. Their win against freo on the weekend proves that.
