Norwood junior Cleve Hughes is set to make his debut this week for Richmond. The 19 year old was taken with the 24th pick in last year’s draft. He is a very promising key forward who is listed at 193cm and 84kg. With the Crows lack of key position players, especially at the moment, he would have been extremely handy to have on our list. I believe we may have made a mistake on draft day by overlooking Hughes.

I agree

He is a SA boy. AA under 18's. KPP which we most needed. And was predicted to go as high as pick 10-12 if IRC

Our perceptions as fans are short term focussed though. you gotta trust our brains in recruting

Lets hope Pfeiffer turns into a gun but :thumbsu:

yeah, but there's a difference between getting a game with Richmond, and getting a game with a good team.

Good Call - Common sense approach here

Even Fergus Watts gota game in defence for St Kilda - and look how that turned out

Predicted to go 10-12, yet all teams overlooked him until he was picked up at 24 IIRC.

If only the AFC had the foresight to recognise that our KPP stocks would take a battering 6 months in to the future, then we could have played a young raw KPP out of his depth in a sign of desperation.

Who are you handing back - Douglas or Pfeiffer?

Plus, we have the choice of Obst (192 / 82), Steven (192 / 81), Maric (198 / 96), Meesen (199 / 89), Gibson (195 / 93) or Griffen (199 / 84) as potential KPP's not in the 22. Even Jericho (189 / 92) can fill in if necessary.

If anything, we're short on running depth - if Edwards doesn't come good, Burton suspended, Pfeiffer out, no Torney, we're down to Mattner, Vince, Porplyzia and Douglas as our depth, with at least one of those needed this week.

Good call Marvin.

Lets make the call on Hughes three years down the track when all players have had the chance to develop a little more.

Our depth in midfielders was poor last year and look at the mature age of our quality midfielders.

We needed to get new quality blood into the side - and Douglas and Pfeiffer will do this in time. Add Knights,VB, Vince, and Poprlycia and we have some up and coming talent in this area.

Sure we need KPP as well, but you cannot get everyone. With Sarge, Bock, Truck, Kenny, Welshy, Potential etc in the mix and all younger our greatest need was for the midfield.

The previous year we went for rucks - again because of our ageing fleet of talls and because there was ruck depth in that draft and not in the years that followed. This has been seen to be a good move. Maric and my boy "Meeson" (see my thread after the Norwood game) will be good players for us in this area. So hopefully will be Huddo next year after recovering fully form injury.

This draft will be strong and deep.

I am sure we will look at some KPP then.

He was overlooked also as Fantasia know that this year's draft has a wealth of quality big men. Las year we concentrated on smalls this year it will be on talls. If we drafted Hughes with pick 17 instead of Pfeiffer this year Hughes would probably not be as good as a KPP we could get next year for a second rounder.

Meh, Hindsight – they way I see it is the is an oppurtunity for a player to take his chance and make a name for himself for the AFC, injuries happen, at least we have the comfort that these guys will be back (imagine if they weren’t )

I have to say the only person I wish we had of picked up is Del Santo, I have no disrespect for Rielly at all but damn.

Also being realistic Hughes may have struggled to get a game for Norwood and not even been in the spotlight for selection had he been picked up by us. He also has Maric and Meeson to compete with – so it’s a no brainer really

Hmm all I know is this year's draft will be very exciting, I hope we somehow get our hands on 2 first rounders.

Lachlan Hansen would be nice ;)

His younger brother Gavin is getting a game, I'm pretty sure he wouldn't have a problem. Gavin is a gun. The last two weeks for Norwood he has got in the best players. Outside runner with a nice kick.

If any of you saw Cleve Hughes play you should be kicking yourself he was not drafted. Even I am upset Port didn’t nab him. Very surprised he went at 24.

I watched him play for two years and this guy is a gun. He can play CHF or FF, can take a contested mark, he has a long long kick and is very accurate. Actually I remember him kicking quite a few goals from outside 50 on the boundary.

Ahwell best of luck to the guy and who knows maybe he will be a mummy’s boy and come back one day.

once again - meh, south aussie players always seem to be "guns" when theya re drafted interstate - see Jay Schulz

I will hold off for atleast 25 games from young Hughes before even considering that we should not have taken Douglas and Pfiffeir

Just so you know, Gavin and Cleve aren't related :)

Don't take this the wrong way and jump on me for this, but your recruiting guys are deadset morons.
Why do they year after year take a Vic with your first pick? Angwin, Watts, Meesen, Douglas etc. Do they not learn?
Wood should have been taken over Meesen and certainly Hughes last year.

Alright Watts and Angwin were busts, but still Most players don't automatically want to go home and i'm completely comfortable with taking the best player avaliable even if he's from Mars FFS!

Don't take this the wrong way, but recruiting advice from a Freo supporter has a certain amount of irony. ;)

Besides, Marcus Drum, Ryley Dunn, Byron Schammer, Leigh Brown, Matthew Pavlich - Freo don't exactly leap over themselves to get WA boys with their first pick, when they don't trade it away.

So 16 recruiting teams got it wrong by overlooking him in the first round and early stages of the second ? Not doubting your judgement, but I find it hard to believe he could have been that good if he lasted that long in the draft.

Chris Groom was a good pick. Who did they give up for him again ? ;)
