Mitch Starc

Bit precious about some fairly accurate observations regarding his lack of fire in the first test. I remember Starc not taking too kindly to Warne's criticisms of his bowling and body language a few years ago, which funnily enough resulted in him bowling with a bit of venom. Does the Starc household have an issue with criticism from the media and respected past players perhaps? Not sure how I would feel about my missus coming to my rescue and it ending up in the media..

Probably annoyed that 7/Fox haven’t done a Starc/Healy special yet this season , unlike the 15 nine did last season

I'm pretty certain I saw an Alyssa Healy/Mitchell Starc "would you rather" segment during one lunch break in the First Test - couldn't remember if it were 7 or Fox

It has now been reported that Starc is privateley “furious” about the ongoing comments that have clouded his selection for the rest of the Test series.

“Starc is believed to be furious over the latest bake from Warne, having already been criticised this week by former selector Mark Waugh and pace legend Mitchell Johnson,” Fairfax Media’s Andrew Wu reported.

The same report claims Starc’s fitness was at the centre of a disagreement within the Australian national panel of selectors — Trevor Hohns, Greg Chappell and coach Justin Langer.

Speaking to Fox Cricket’s Mark Howard before play, Starc addressed criticism about his performance in the first Test and said he was actually pretty pleased with how the ball came out, bar a few overs with the second new ball in both innings.

“Bar about three overs I was pretty happy,” Starc said. “Stuck to my plans, did my role for the team.

“I’ve worked on my consistency over the last few years and my economy rate was the best its been for three years so that’s something I’ve tried to work on for a few years and it’s great to see it come to life in the games.

“Bar three overs, I was a little bit off with the second new ball in the first innings, and the second new one in the second innings.

“Bar three overs I was pretty happy with how the ball came out.”

He gets a bit sooky doesnt he over some fairly justified criticism?

“Warney’s right in a way — his previous 12 first-class games he has been averaging in the 60s with the ball, so there’s a little bit going on there,” Katich told SEN Radio.

Not sure why he's so offended by the criticism if these statistics are accurate.

Desperately needs first class form. His spell last night with the new ball was a disgrace.

Sure, took 3 wickets against the Sri Lanka tail, but looks so inept against decent batsman.

How he landed 200 test wickets beggars belief. Shouldn't play ashes.

It really doesn't. At his best he is a very good bowler, who is out of form at the moment.

I don't see how him playing the 2nd test will do him any good. Looks like he is lacking hunger and his technique has fallen apart. Needs some time away from the game and fixing up his wrists again

I've defended him for a long while because of his left-arm variety, but he's mostly lost the ability to swing the ball because his wrist position is wrong. Badly needs some remedial work if nothing else.

Someone needs to get him angry, AND focused.

Technique and consistency doesn't work - he cannot maintain focus to see out an over, let alone a bowling plan.

Like Johnson, and later Lee you need a captain that knows how to push his buttons to get him firing, but also one mentally strong enough to reel him back in again. I get the feeling he's a bit fragile mentally.

I have no faith in any coaches being able to actually teach our guys anything. If they don't bring it themselves, either through natural talent or junior coaches, none will spend the time or effort (or for that matter be allowed to) to complete remedial work when there's 20/20 cash to be made.

Cummins is a different beast - his time away, whilst horribly unfortunate has created a mindset that is different to all our other bowlers. Helps he is immensely talented too, but he seems to understand the game - not just use physical assets.

I'd love to hear the theories of the national team on protecting and improving the ball condition for extending the period the ball will swing, and even to accelerate roughage to encourage reverse swing - the practice of consistently throwing the ball cross-seam on the bounce is illogical - it destroys both sides of the ball equally (random chance). It should be thrown side arm with the seam to ensure the same side is hit every time. There is now SO much cross-seam bowling now any hope of swing is destroyed. Maybe it's just the pitches are far too good, or our bowlers too incompetent, but it has to hurt any ability to deceive the batsmen with movement.

Either that or there's no-one there who understands how the physics works - and I refuse to believe that - it's a basic concept of the game, like playing in the "V" to allow for swing, evading short balls and leaving outside off to account for variable bounce, defending to 'get your eye in' and building an innings according to the conditions. (Hmm....)

The pink ball (and opposition being dominated) saw a significant increase (30-40%) of balls bowled seam upright. I hope it's not just the ball, as it's an area we have struggled for a very long time and IMO would dramatically improve our performances if the players learned how to bowl (and subsequently bat) against good bowling.

This

I find it weird when someone is out of form that they have been like this the whole time.

He had a very good Ashes last year, instrumental in us winning the first test in SA, and generally been poor since then.

He is a worry at the moment though, he’s would be a massive liability in England. A lot of water to go under the bridge, but on current form it would simply be hazelwood in and Starc our for the first ashes test.

Maybe because they can no longer use sandpaper he's lost the ability to bowl ?

Warne tried and failed!
